It's not that big of a mistranslation: they still convey roughly the same information - Little Buddy is a smallfry who got lost during a run and has a insatiable hunger as result of their endless wandering. This is also rare. The English translation just omits a few details, such as Little Buddy specifically getting lost during a big run and what this phenomenon is actually called. Still an interesting find nonetheless.
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that the Wahoo big run isn’t the first big run. Iirc, Nintendo said somewhere that the king salmon are exclusive to the splatlands, which means they probably aren’t new in the splatoon world. I think Big Run might be similar, they existed in the splatoon 2 era, just we didn’t know because they were in the splatlands.
@@rizirone Hey i could be wrong about this but in the manual for splatoon 2 salmon run the page for glowflys was about them rushing cities and destroying them which sounds very like big run but just cities and not stages so maybe those were the past big runs and that was how the splatoon 3 main character got lil buddy
big run is implied from the sunken scroll “The Book of Madai” in splatoon 2. since its a bible reference, the actual text is probably much older. so they been around for awhile also reasonably frequent if small fry got lost
Since the japanese translation describes smallfries getting lost in the big run, it stands to reason that big runs have happened in the past that they have been able tp observe this phenomenon. Either that or the Back to the Future hats we've been getting from Salmon runs could indicate that big runs might have some weird timey wimey thing going on with it.
I think that it's more plausible that Little Buddy got lost in his way to this big run. Maybe he came too early or maybe salmonids have been gathering in Inkadian waters for a while in preparation and got separated. These things are common in migrations. If big runs are strictly 70 years apart and there really haven't been any recently, it's more likely to me that he was a sign of what's to come. There's also the possibility that big run refers to a bunch of these events that we're about to play. And if so there could have been one of two before the events of Splatoon 3.
One of the rare cases where the mistranslation is better than the actual cannon, because any implications that are brought up in the original Japanese version create even more plot holes (as if Hero mode wasn’t plagued with enough of them) I doubt that the Small Fry we are with is 70 something years because of how childlike it acts, always curious and wanting to explore. It doesn’t strike me as a creature that’s been hunting for years, and it’s also hard to believe over all that time it wouldn’t just find its way back to another school.
I am positively obsessed with the lore right now, especially thanks to all your videos I've been binge watching! Hopefully we get some more lore during Big Run somehow or even more salmon run related stuff in the DLC.
While small fry may not be necessarily "baby salmonid" (as in, while it can be a starting stage of other salmonid (as the scroll mentions growing up) some small fry may stay small fry into adulthood) I still see Lil buddy as a kid. And I dunno what that says about me, but I find it a cute story that Neo 3 just..adopted this child and went on adventures with them
If big run refers to a huge mass migration it could simply be that the big run already passed through were small fry was found as opposed to being part of a separate big run.
Im pretty sure that there were big runs before the start of splatoon 3. It's just they have been in splatsville and not inkopolis. Seeing how the splatlamds are the place where marine life on Land began, itd make sense that the salmonids would try to get back to their original original spawning grounds which is why theyd try to go further inland in splatsville but stay in their restricted zones in inkopolis
You know what would be cool is if, unbeknownst to us, there was a big run in a different city like inkopolis or something. Then in a dlc if we revisit we would see the aftermath, which would be wild. Imagine like - Splatoon 3: Tides of Chaos where we revisit old areas completely overrun and fight off the salmonid hordes and reclaim the areas. It would also explain why Calli and Marie keep following us across the games.
I was more thinking there was a big run BEFORE the wahoo world big run that out character just didn’t experience as there is a pretty large time gap in between 2 and 3 They also say smallfry are young salmonid so unless that was mistranslation they couldn’t be 70
Interesting theory. But speaking or Rassicas; where the hell are they?! Its been 2 months since the story playthrough. I hope they are okay. Did they stop content? Life emergency? We dont know?
I’m not sure where the tweet is exactly. Now that I think about it I think it was a tweet from Nintendo back when either the reveal trailer was shown or when the return of the mammalians trailer released. I can search for it later
I always thought that our clittle Buddy Smallfry" was always a certain kind of chosen one due to Splatoon's use of prophesies and how he saves the world from Mr. Grizz.
I feel like the Calamari Inkcantation also has something to do with it. He sings it during parts of the single player and no matter where I am he always runs towards the Squid Sisters or just Callie. I don't that that's just him being random I think he knows who they are and since the song is one of inspiration it could have inspired Small fry.
I don’t have a source for this, but I’m sure that after Rassicas’s video some official source confirmed that smallfries were children. (It could have just been in Japanese, that’s probable). It was specifically about our one, but I think it was said generally to indicate all, so im not sure. I’ll look into this more and reply to this comment if I find anything.
I doubt that Nintendo intends smallfry to be old enough get a seniors discount, I think a big run having occurred before rotm is more plausible. So many questions about salmonid lore, so little information
I might be wrong but didn't they say that Big Runs happen every few months or something ? I don't know if it applies lore-wise but if it does thay brings up a lot of questions but Smallfry could've gotten lost a few months ago.
The American translation: Provides a simplified more digestible version of information that is easily understood by an American audience. Splatoon RU-vidrs: We've been lied to this entire time! Seriously the American translations are actually really nice, from what I've seen they give a pretty accurate depiction of what happens.
I think this big run ain't the first one they just happen on and off like natural disasters and just somehow didn't happen for the entirety of splatoon 2 🤨 maybe it's just another one of their epic global warming references
