Smallsword should be an Olympic event. They already have the proper protective gear. I'd even settle for epee with allowed grappling first to 1 point wins.

While I'd love to see Smallsword gain more notice, it's awesome. The general principles that govern 90% of the actions aren't different from foil/epee. Right of Way even comes from smallsword training. First blood style events are a ton of fun however.

@@rocketcityhema671 I agree priority rules are a good training tool to stop a suicidal action from becoming habitual. But they are training tools to keep a swordsman alive and footage of olympic fencers hitting eachother seamingly at the same time would suggest priority for survival training is now just an artifact and a race against the buzzer. Great vid I subbed.

It's very useful as a feint, when you're grappling it's very easy to swipe the blade with the off hand and so to avoid that stab behind the back

I fence foil and this works smooth against opposing handedness opponents, and really anyone in very close range as shoulders pass

Does this technique have any other names than Flashy Smallsword? Also if I'm interested in learning how to use a small sword would you have any suggestions on where to acquire one?

I think first blood is a 19th century rule popular in classical fencing (hence why the epee got a way longer blade in that period again). It changed totally how people fenced. From blade contact - technical rewarding fencing with short blades to no blade contact at all before a point is scored (unless maybe a riposte) as seen in modern sports fencing.

There is a similar move in some forms of Chinese Jian, though this makes much more sense!

A technique similar to this shows up in Joachim Meyer’s 1570 treatise, specifically in his rapier (sidesword) section. Grabbing the wrist or weapon and thrusting behind the back, at least. Though, I believe the reason differs. Now, this is just speculation on my part, but maybe you will find it interesting. Now, when dealing with grapple/wrestle heavy fighters, I find that if I grip their arm or weapon after a parry, they will try to seize mine to even the odds. To avoid this, if I do a false edge deflection (for example) and grab their weapon, when they try to charge in, if I bring my weapon behind me they would most likely be unable to grab my point because it would be to their right, and far from their left arm. Because of this, they either get stabbed or run into the point themselves. Should they manage to grab my point, it puts them in an awkward position I can use to wrestle them. Considering their arm is across them and they are reaching, maybe even over-extending to grab my point. This is how I find success with it using one handed cut and thrust swords. However, I have little knowledge of smallsword fencing, so your reasoning is also valid and your knowledge is very insightful. Fantastic video, and I look forward to more.

I appreciate the kind words. Thank you. I looked through Meyer's work (mind you my knowledge of his rapier section is still quite limited) and did find an instance in which he thrusts behind his back, however it is from the Hanging and rather more of a Girata type motion using a funky (but slick) low thrust. Was this the one you were referring to? I couldn't find anything behind the back in the Running In section either. However, I see no reason that you could not transfer this into any other weapon, and I have done so once with Messer. I believe your using of it to ward off potential grapplers is a good one, and I shall give it a go at my next opportunity. Keep an eye out for another video of that nature. -WCS

Unfortunately there is no text to go off of, we only have the image. That’s why I said everything I claimed was speculation. The specific device I am referring to shows up on plate I, on the top left hand corner. I’m sure I can link the image or a video of someone else doing it, should you want it. Also, which specific smallsword manual did this come from?

@@zakaela6790 Ah I've found it now, thank you kindly. The resemblance is uncannily similar. This came from Domenico Angelo's 1765 L'Ecole des Armes, the thumbnail is plate 40. I find it is one of the rarer disarms/lock ups as it doesn't appear in any of my other few Smallsword sources. But I can attest that it works wonderfully.

The reason for this technique is very much to avoid having your arm grappled in addition to showboating. So it's a win win

I started studying smallsword not long ago with l'abbates manual. What source is this move from? British?
@rocketcityhema671
@rocketcityhema671 3 года назад
Hey there, the movement itself appears in a couple of different sources but the plate in particular that I've as the thumbnail comes from Domenico Angelo's 1765 L'Ecole des Armes. Angelo was Italian but most all smallsword use stems from the French method originally.

@rocketcityhema671
@rocketcityhema671 10 месяцев назад
That is a myth, not sure where it came from. Triangular blades have existed as long as we've had dedicated thrusting weapons that we didn't want bending under pressure.

Hey there, thank you very much. Ooft, Smallsword vs Longsword is a tough bout, be sure to keep your distance and your tip lively. For training courses, I don't know of any widely available. Maybe Academy Duello? But If smallsword is your jam, I highly recommend getting some classical training in modern Foil and Epee as the skills there shall directly translate.
