A look at one of the new 'Smart Helmets' on the market. Bluetooth, speakers, lights, all things we've not seen in helmets much in the past. Here's my take on the Australian Edition of the Livall BH60SE after a few weeks of use.

After watching this I’m thinking about buying one having the the lights on the back is great as it means i use the indicator and not have to put my hand out to indicate for as long as some of the junctions where i live are a bit tricky where i live as keeping balanced when approaching them is hard. I have a roundabout that when you approach it you are going downhill and its on a slight angle when you hit it so not having to put your right or left hand out gives you more balance to avoid potentially falling over or wobbling

For what it is....the price isn't bad. A young teenager would love it and older boyz who love their toys will get one too. Personally I like the peace and quite and the noise of my tyres on the road. Good review Shane'o

What I do like is the lights on the back for added visibility, especially in the case if a rider is unconscious after an accident, however, and like you said, I don't think the lights are any replacement for hand signals; drivers are hardly watching for cyclists, let alone watching close indicator lights on the back of their heads, I worry that the lights would actually discourage some riders from using proper signals thinking the lights would be sufficient. Always enjoy the reviews, when I have my morning coffee it's always part of the routine to see if there's new Lama content. Cheers.

Really useful seeing the lights. All the videos I’ve seen before showed visible lights and my is like this one (in black) and I couldn’t see the lights. Will try in the dark now.

We're so inundated with music now, I welcome the bicycle as a place to escape from it. I do have my wahoo fitness app call out distance and speed to me every mile, I guess the helmet could take over that task. I didn't realize helmets were making such a fashion statement. Over time, these helmets will probably become the rage. A person without one will be considered unfortunate. 😊

SENA has a similar helmet and they are pretty popular in the motorcycle community as being the go-to helmet audio system

It's good for me during commute & recreation riding. safer light & in touch with friends and music. Maybe not good for one riding that don't want to be interrupt. Sound quality is deserved for a "WOW". I checked customer feedback in UK. rank 4.6 and 85% customer recommend. Very good for a new brand, maybe because of unique technology.

I use this helmet for rides on my own in the winter, dark nights and lonely lanes it works a treat, keeps me in touch with emergency numbers if I came off, would I race with it! No, our a club run No, but it does have a place on the road.

Shroomish on the sides (likely due to the speakers), Shane your parents were brilliant to design you with an aero head. I think the signal lights are pretty useful for commuting in the dark and rain anything that draws attention to the rider is a good thing. Maybe the fact that drivers don't normally look for lights up at head level is a bonus, it might be more likely to get their attention.

It's a no from me. The design from side on isn't too bad, but looking at it from the front? yeah nah! I completely agree with you on the temple/speaker area being too wide. MIPS would've been nice to see as well. As for the lights? They would be great for daytime running lights if they were a bit brighter, but the indicator function is a bit of a dud, as the 2 signals are too close together IMO. I'd love to see a comparison between this and the Coros helmet, which uses bone conducting speakers

It is a good helmet, the tunes are quite loud and will pair to spotify or VLC on a smart phone you can control it using the remote which using a watch battery. Mine doesnt use a micro USB to charge but another kind of cable. Matey complaining about the fitting, well there is an adjustable knobb at the back for that. It is a good all round helmet, my only concern with my is its a splashproof rating, so how it would fair in an utter downpour, i am unsure. Btw, the music feature is great as pedestrians often hear that before you approach and know to get out of your way ;)

The lights look great and so does the bluetooth integration. Instead of signal lights I'd like to see something like the Varia Radar built into the helmet; some sort of head unit control/app.

Styled like a helmet worn during Vietnam War, but design does provide better protection to temple area. They could integrate Heart Rate monitoring like #lifebeam.

Anyway thanks for the good review .. Smartness in the helmet for me is not a necessity yet (even though I voice control my lighting at home ;) .. take care!

IF you have indicators on your vehicle, you are legally mandated to USE them, for every turn. Left-turns, roundabouts etc. Just saying; people may not grasp this factor. Generally bicycle riders are not required to indicate left-turns, nor on roundabout exits.

Great to see some innovation, and as already commented the price is okay. I personally don’t like the promotion of phone use whilst driving or riding, even with hands free, as you have to think to respond, this takes your concentration off the road. Listening to music not so bad as it is not interactive. The lights are a great idea, but indicators are so so, brake lights would be better and triggered by a change in inertia. Having another thing on the handlebar, yeah not for me. What I would like to see, more passive smart devices, i.e. as you slow down the brake light comes on automatic. Also less stuff on your handlebar. If cycle computers could be integrated into helmet visors or glasses this would remove rubbish from the handlebar. Also what about a headlight in the helmet? Rear lights need to be brighter on this helmet too. At the moment we need to carry all this extra stuff; Lights Cycle computer Cameras Helmets Phones to connect to this stuff. Cadence sensors Speed sensors Power meters. Would be nice to integrate this stuff so one thing does more, instead of all this bolt on! Just think if you could put your sim card in your cycle computer, use this helmet and leave the phone at home as you can text and call through your helmet or cycle computer how great would that be. Less big 200 gram phones to carry! What does others think?

Yeah, pretty stupid. Too close together to be a useful turn signal to anyone that isn't on your wheel, I believe there is a minimum separation distance for blinkers on motorbikes/scooters too?? ....is it aero though Shane? :-P

Found on Indiegogo. I bet it would test better aero wise if worn backwards. I will do this science if I get a hold of one! :) Other than that, it serves a purpose and it doesn't look like it's attempting to be a super aero 'roadie race' helmet.

Nice try Livall,2 stars...the key function is still missing: Heads up rear view. Reevu helmets did it decades ago with parabolic mirrors but they were heavy and ugly. Clunky bar mirrors or turning ones head just doesn’t cut it, and flashing christmas tree lights aren’t the solution.

Than Better to wait for new garmin and helmet with ant or bt integration. A lot of unnessesary controllers exists for light, helmet now while all funcs better to control with one head unit. Now ANT+ exists for that, only need to add more profiles.
