Smart Cups are marketed as the first "printed" beverage, with flavor printed right into the single-use bio-plastic cup. Today I take a closer look to see how they really work.

These cups are solving a problem that doesn't exist.
@__aceofspades
@__aceofspades 4 года назад
They actually solve a problem, but not a problem that consumers have. It's a problem companies have. If you buy powder or concentrated liquid to add to water, once you add it, there is zero branding. Unlike a can of soda or bottle of water that has a label. This cup is a way for them to brand their drink concentrate, but stay different from energy drinks. It's a bad product but it does solve a problem.

Sounds like greenwashing to me they're trying to jump on the eco-friendly things bandwagon. Eco plastic has to be broken down at a special plant and there's not very much of them and it cost a lot of money so it's going to end up in the landfill more likely than the water bottles that we drink r there's recycling plants for those. y People are better off getting a reusable cup.

eco/bio-plastic is just a greenwashing of common preexisting plastics that are made directly from biomass. All plastic is technically bioplastic... it just uses a geological process that takes millions of years to arrive at the petroleum we use to manufacture it. Further complication comes from the even more ironic fact that the reason common thermoplastics recycle poorly is that they breakdown substantially when you reprocess them. So a plastic that breaks down easier is probably going to be less environmentally friendly in short term, and maybe even the long term. And aluminum? Recycles excellently, but requires a plastic film to prevent it from poisoning us.

Old idea, new package, much more expensive. Back in the 50’s and 60’s we had Fizzies. They were a tablet that came in a small waxed paper pouch that fizzed while dispersing the flavoring. “Ruth Millard invented the idea for Emerson Drug Company, manufacturer of Bromo-Seltzer, by adding a fruit flavor that children liked. The product's ingredients changed over time, and as various artificial sweeteners were banned by the FDA.” : Wikipedia. They were certainly more eco friendly since disposable cups hadn’t been invented yet. They tasted eh, there was just a little carbonation after the tablets were dissolved. No caffeine. The Wikipedia article is informative for anyone interested.

The important part about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is that it's in order of importance, you want to reduce the amount of things you use and throw away, reuse things you can, and recycle as much as possible, this is sorta missing the point in that this company should probably just be selling tablets you put in normal glasses you use at home. Recycle is last on the list because recycling is less eco friendly than just reusing normal glasses you have at home and it's meant as the last thing you do in situations where you've already reduced and can't reuse.

@Smattless What does this mean lmao Reduce means to purchase and dispose of fewer plastics. The fewer things that are produced, the less there is to need reused or recycled. That's why it's step one. This company may be creating plastics in a sustainable way, but the are still creating waste which is not intended to be reused and relies on the consumer to recycle. They should focus on reducing the amount of packaging, for example selling tablets instead of plastic cups.

With a tub of Gfuel you wont create as much waste, as it will last a lot longer and instead of 1 plastic cup per serving its 1 plastic tub per 40 servings, and the tub is a recyclable plastic. Plus you save your money because instead of $2 per serving its less than $1, and that's the same with other brands of powdered energy drinks as well. i would say these "Smart Cups" are far from smart, unless they kick off and you're the owner of the company.

Reminds me of those old coffee dispenser machines. They had the coffee (cappuccino/tea/veggie soup) powder at the bottom of the cups and only added hot water. BTW: The juice took so long to dissolve because it already has a high acidity, so the acid in the powder didn't have much incentive to go into the water. The carbonated water also has high acidity, but it forms bubbles that mechanically help dissolve the stuff.

So, to answer your question about cranberry juice taking longer, it really comes down to basic chemistry. All liquids (solvants) have a fixed ability to dissolve a certain volume of solutes (think sugars, salts, etc) based on temputure and the relaship between solutes and solvants. Cranberry juice is just water with sugar, cranberry flavor, and other solutes already dissolved into the solution. In lamens terms, cranberry juice has some of its parking spots occupied while the water parking lot is completely vacant. Because it's vacant, that flavor can find a parking spot much quicker. The cranberry juice parking lot already has many occupied parking spots, so the printed drink will take longer to find parking spots, similar to Walmart on a Saturday afternoon vs a Tuesday morning
