As a Sri Lankan im very disappointed about those kids, they didnt appreciate your generosity and the next thing you know their mother comes out asking for money its mainly because they are very uneducated and have a very low level of discipline.
Also that monk boy seemed so sweet and well behaved the way he was clearing debris in the monetary and sweeping up after everyone where the monk was. Too bad Dale didn't meet them first.
No, bro it's quite common to see such people in all most all countries. Specially in the contries with tribel areas. Their culture is like that because it's difficult to earn money and also to travel.hence naturally they will become greedy.
Being forced to pay money, ruins the whole experience. Thinking of not seeing a smile on his face after getting a phone, feels cheated. Lastly, you are a very kind hearted person.

I urge people to extract some deep lessons from this video I don't understand why most of the people in the comments focus on negativity than positive side of the entire journey to the top of this mountain. The tuk tuk driver making every attempt to help Dale to figure out how to get to the top of the mountain. The old man trying to stop everytime dale stops to check out the view and making a attempt to lead him to the top of the mountain. selfless nature of the Buddhist monk boy, who's probably under training to be next main monk by getting instilled with all the good values. How the Buddhist main monk refused any donations & Dale still made the donation out of his own choice. The contrast from the boys living in poor conditions & the monk boy who's being raised with different value system. I truely believe the true purpose of this life is to give & give rather than take & take not to say people will take advantage of you but that still shouldn't stray you away from being kind to each other. what you give is what you get in this life. It's not the fault of the boys that they're born in to different conditions than the monk boy or Dale. It's funny how people in comments are apologizing to Dale for the three boys & mother's behavior & this doesn't reflect how kind & hospitable srilankan people are. Infact to the contrary I just feel that it's the circumstances & living conditions of different people is what makes them selfless & selfish & there's nothing to be apologetic about their beautiful country. How a smartphone & 1000 rupees can create jealousy, hatred, arguments between poor brothers. Even though Dale was explaining them to divide the gifts among themselves equally they were arguing among themselves and Dale getting disappointed from their behavior, there's obviously miscommunication as Dale can't speak singhalese/tamil & kids don't understand english. It's not the fault of anyone & there's nothing to be apologetic about in fact it should teach us all to be kind to people who are stuck in different conditions & circumstances than we are in, humility & being grateful for what we all have in our own lives.

Buddhism is not a religion is a philosophy and lord buddha never forces anyone to follow and it does not only belong to Sinhalese people anyone can follow it. We should ban creating Muslim churches+buddhist temples+hindu templates building unnecessary ways in this country. And we should ban religious schools too which makes people divide.

Have to admit Dale I’m super impressed with how you dealt with those boys and their greed and lack of gratitude. In comparison the Buddhist monk and his associates showed a lot of decorum and dignity. Really enjoyed this video as it was off the beaten track and different from all the other vloggers. Dare I say it, even better than Bald and Harold.
It was painfully disappointing to see how the kindness and the generosity of this man was not appreciated. A thank you and a kind invitation to this tired Scotsman to have a simple cup of tea at their house would've gone a long way.... 😢

That's what Sri Lanka has been famous for and I'm sure you must have experienced that with other families you met around the country while in SL. But these people I don't know what they are and a total disgrace. Probably the way they've been brought up. Clear contrast shown between how the people in the temple reacted to money and these ones. Well some people are not educated and they are in utter poverty and when they such a person out of no where! Even if you were at that situation you would ask for money when they know this person has money! Ylves Viper FYI- I was born in Sri Lanka and my family didn’t always have money but my parents never taught me to be greedy and if someone does something generous for you, whether it’s giving you money or a cell phone as a thank you, you don’t ask for more. It’s common sense really. I mean, look at their mother. She didn’t even greet Dale but handed her hand out for money just because he’s a tourist and some people know how to take advantage of that.

Wow. I can't believe these older brothers weren't exited for the little one's gift. They wanted more and the one with orange shirt didn't want to share the 1000. How disappointing. I wish the phone had went to the monks but that's life. I grew up in a village myself and i and my sisters were thankful for pencils, notebooks, the food.. can't imagine getting a smartphone!
