The biggest camera conspiracy is that you probably have an amazing camera in your pocket, but many manufacturers decided to cripple it. The video was shot on a mid-priced phone. Open gate, no denoising, no sharpening, no AI magic. Just pure RAW data from the camera sensor with the MotionCam app. So why do regular camera videos look so awful?
Smartphone camera sensors are awesome. Yes, they are small, but because of that, they are fast. Many of them do dual readout and some support selective conversion gain where different parts of the sensor have different sensitivity. All of that helps smartphone sensors achieve a pretty good dynamic range.
The stock camera app does heavy post-processing. That's why standard smartphone footage is so compressed and oversharpened.
Processing RAW data in real-time is not feasible for current smartphones. Storing RAW data is a hassle; one minute of 4000x3000 footage can be 12-30 GB. I can see why many manufacturers don't even want to give this option. But many videographers would appreciate this option because they have a proper workflow for it.
Phones should support the Android Camera2 API to be able to record RAW video. Many manufacturers don't support it fully, just partially for one camera or not at all. Only Google with Pixels and Samsung with the S24 Ultra have amazing (L3) support of the API.
Other Samsung phones like the S24/S24 Plus/S23 FE have partial support. There are some Chinese manufacturers who have decent support like Xiaomi and OnePlus, but I'm not considering them because of privacy concerns.
Google & Samsung have shot the latest promo videos of their phones with the help of the MotionCam app, so they are aware of what is possible. Let's hope other manufacturers (like *cough Sony*) will become friendlier to videographers.
