Today, smartphones are very much capable supporting (critical communication) professionals in their day to day job. Often we see these people working in the critical communications environment using a regular PMR/LMR radio (such as TETRA or P25 radios) as well as a smartphone. The PMR/LMR radio to be used in demanding situations and the Smartphone to be used in less urgent situations. This 'ecosystem' works, but it is not ideal.
Since many years, manufacturers are working towards the most efficient communications tool for these professionals and it seems that all of the hard R&D has paid off. For example, this year, Hytera has launched the Hytera PNC380 and the Hytera PNC550. Both devices are PoC Radios that can be used for MCPTT communications in the most demanding circumstances as well as for less critical situations. In my review I discuss the benefits of using these PoC radios against the use of Smartphones.
