The reason why prince gets such a high score is people don’t want to see dry hard technical combos, they like to see crazy item combos that are creative.
As a filthy casual who knows nothing about Smash beyond its existence, I always find that the combos like Prince's and Tacos' are my favourites to watch. They're the most visually interesting and the showmanship is amazing, even for someone not versed in the intricacies of the game. The second combo in this vid got me so fucking hyped and I can't stop watching it, purely for the reaction of the crowd, judges and commentators.
You also have to think about how prince needs perfect timing to get his combo to work and di with lsi also have to be perfect for the damage boost to work. That’s why prince got a 50.
@@solarstream4144 Literally everyone's combo needed perfect timing for it to work. His weren't the most difficult, but definitely the most visually pleasing.
@@Alphacarmine72 Put them in a seperate room where they can't hear the commentators and only see the gameplay. Judges shouldn't be there to be entertained, they"re there to work and give an objective opinion.

I think a truly fair combo contest would involve the judges watching all the combos first and then giving scores, so they arent influenced by anything.
that wont do anything. You'll still have recency bias in the tournament based on what you saw last and comparing what someone does to the person who went before them and worse right before them.
Yea and last year they pissed me off when one of the contestants did a crazy combo and they gave him 8 and 7 but prince doesnt even do a combo and fails and ohh its prince lets give him 9 and 8 for a failed combo
I felt that one a bit overrated. So I completely disagree that it can even be compared to Prince's! I also like Kort's 1st combo better than Tacos', the slow-mo gimmick was way overrated. Not saying Tacos didn't do a DAMN AMAZING combo, though!!!
there is a lot of emotional manipulation going on when scoring these combos regardless of actual difficulty. I've noticed a few patterns in the scoring from judges. decent combo + few tries = comes off as cheap and easy decent combo + many tries = builds tension, therefore higher score. decent combo + gimmick = hype beast decent combo + more skill + no gimmick = weak beast great combo + many tries + gimmick = impressive, climatic, and kreygasm first judge's score sets the tone for the rest of the judge's scores crowd cheer volume = bonus being prince = bonus having a certain character = bonus Conclusion: more tries>less tries gimmick>skill power kills>weak kills anticipation>observation In my opinion, the most fair way to judge a combo contest (BASED ON SKILL AND PRESENTATION) is to individually show the judges an already completed recording of each contestants combos and have them rate the recordings in order from least to greatest without knowing who performed the combos. Add up the ranks of each player after every round and you get a winner. But the downside of this method of judging, would be that you are eliminating the challenge of actually completing the combo in a certain duration. Overall, its less hype. However, you would be getting a more accurate scoring based off skill, not clouded by player bias, or ambient bias. This isn't like ice skating or another sport that pays attention to all the moves you make with a set amount of values for you to rack up in a certain amount of time. No, this contest is about the anticipation, hype, and whether you are having a good day or a bad day while judging. imagine if the scoring was like +15 for weak hit fox upairs +25 for falcon punch +20 points for pivot jabs +10 points for ledge cancels shit would get boring real quick. I don't follow combo videos, but i just had thought about the contest as i was watching and I realized that I care more about how i feel about the combos rather than the judge's scores and how irrelevant the scores are to the actual enjoyment of the seeing these combos come to life.
I kinda get what your saying, but I really don't see the "bias" argument I LOVE Prince, and was rooting for him, but near the end I was like come on Kort show them what your made of!! but if he got that combo, then he'd win. And Prince gaining extra points for being Prince I feel like people just feel like "Oh, he's a really good player, so I hope to see someone step up and dethrone him." (Doesn't happen) "Well that was expected." , and characters meaning something. I have no issues with any of the judges but they do seem to be amateurs to judging (some of them). But I don't feel changing the system would do much. They all did amazing, but what he did broke some of what many of them could even imagine, therefore it spiked his results IMO. But even then Prince did have an incompleted combo, which I kinda see some bias there, but they showed love to others. It would have been neat to see Prince dethroned. But he worked towards winning, his combo was something unnatural (via round 2). And they even just hoped for all of them to get by, there not biased, but I can see how people would believe so. But yeah they all did amazing and I understand the flashiness beating it out, but they all had an opinion, that being it doesn't have to be technical, just has to be making the crowd go wild. And also that it just has too look good and the wow factor. Not to mention the compliments they gave other contestants. That's my side of things. (Sorry if this is a sloppy response, I am not good at arguing points).
I agree, but the whole gimmicky > skill makes sense from an entertainment standpoint. It's safe to assume everyone there understands Smash64 at a technical level, but that's not the point. The point it to great some flashy moves. Yes, it does take skill to perform such moves. But understanding certain mechanics and utilizing items/moves in ways they aren't usually used it far more entertaining than watching the same combos.
You and me both. "I don't follow combo videos, but i just had thought about the contest as i was watching and I realized that I care more about how i feel about the combos rather than the judge's scores and how irrelevant the scores are to the actual enjoyment of the seeing these combos come to life."
I loved this video, but there are some clear bias problems amongst the judges, the rating at 1:12:19 would NEVER be given to anyone else who wasn't prince

The problem is, players are coming there with these dry ass combos. YES, they are hard, BUT, if you know you are going up against somebody flashy, why do you keep doing these dry ass combos? Also, players need to learn combos with toons that they don't use. Make up a Ice Climber combo or something, THAT SHIT WOULD BE CRAZY!
cantankerous I know they aren't in the public contest but they are in the home versions. But they should just have them there just for the contest only.
Stealth Star None of these guys lab combos in melee because the only smash game that lends itself well to combo contests is 64. An Icies combo would just be a desync showcase
I watched the clip where they scored and it's just that the first paper wasn't the score they were going for. They never changed the order of the cards in till the end so what may have happened was that they didn't have the score they wanted on top and didn't bother to change it before scoring.
I think they should change the format so everyone plays all the rounds and the score's are totalled. These players probably put so much work into their combos. It's a shame we don't get to see them all.
cause for real though your opinions don't matter on something that was 2018 and already finished with you would judge differently everyone else would judge differently no one thinks in the same way for people like you to make assumptions based on nothing ruins the whole point of what having judges are for if the entire audience had its way in this contest every single combo would be a perfect 50. so instead of keep jerking each other off agreeing about something that literally means nothing because for the love of god ITS A CONTEST FOR FUCKING FUN your suppose to watch and enjoy thats it thats the whole point of it.... why don't you guys go do something with your lives instead? maybe go help some poor community thats struggling just anything but complain on the internet about a contest that happened almost a year ago at this point that will literally do nothing to change anything. you guys are literally the worst of youtube comments you guys say stuff just to get a positive reaction from people who agree even if its for something stupid because you want the attention. its time for a reality check guys go look at yourselves in the mirror and look at what you have become and contemplate what to do with the rest of your life instead of act like your a professional judger of a competition of a game made in 1999
Never ever did I ever think I would watch a RU-vid video over an hour long in its entirety, But I did see some cool combo action on a platform that is falling gracefully to antiquity...Thank you!
I disagree. Prince's combos were original and breathtaking. Perhaps not the most difficult ones, but they blew everyone's mind. Even in the last one, pulling the opponent back from a fall throwing a fan?! Scores aren't just about technical ability (which he surely doesn't lack), but also innovation and emotion.
Gotta love it when one announcer is clearly not paying attention to what the other is saying and goes "alright alright" when they finish and starts talking about what they wanna talk about.
Prince surely is an amazing smash player and nails the combos-- but watching this, I can't help but feel as if the judges are bias towards Prince because he is fan favourite, giving him straight 10s each time. I feel the judges should also show their cards all at once-- to eliminate peer presure. Good show though, all of these people are damn good players! Prince deserved to win, no doubt about it-- but I feel the judges were poor at giving the scores, flipping 9 and 10's as if it was nothing, and then calling an 8 a ''disappointment''. Isn't it 1-10? Shouldn't 7-8 shouldn't be bad scores, but the judges were too quick to give ''too high scores'' I think, and therefore making it seem like everything underneath a 9 or 10 was ''mediocre'', when it shouldn't be.
The scoring system used here is actually on a 5-10 scale. So really 7 or 6 is the closest middle grounds on the scale. And everyone preformed fantastically, a lot of new tricks and showmanship was used which is paired well with technical prowess. However I do agree with you that the scores where oddly high this time around.
"Doesn't have to be the "most" difficult." As he said in the video. Don't twist words around man. He also stated it had to be enough to get people out of their seats, which shouldn't be the best thing in the world.
The 64 combo contest is one of my favorite smash events of the year. I really like the idea of giving more time for later rounds (especially the finals). The way the elimination rounds are step up now incentivizes the players to front-load their best combos. With more time, players might save their more difficult/spectacular combos for the end.
controller cam for next ssc? i was thinking about that for last year to say but not sure this year i really want to see hand movement id honestly like to see controller cam for all major events but for start combo contest controller cam should be good
It's strange how it seems like Prince gets 9's on unfinished combos, and other players get 6's. Is he everyone's favorite? He's surely the best, no doubt, but the judges seemed biased.
