There's no question the songs are top shelf, but the album (as in the studio execution of those songs) has it's issues. A number of very good songs were lost in the composition and production choices on the album. Their quality only became apparent when they were played live. With that said, there were couple of instances where everything came together, and the results were as good as anything they ever recorded, such as Behold! The Night Mare. I think a lot of the hindsight love has more to do the way these songs come to life played live as opposed to the actual album. There was a long period where I listened to Adore more than any of the other albums. As much as I love it, I know it's quite flawed.
The most underrated album of the pumpkins. ADORE is a grower. First time i heard this album in 1998, it blown me away all tracks are good i can still sing every single of it including 17" lol. Daphne Descends always bring me back to good memories of my college years.
@@poseidone5 Agreed. One of the best albums ever recorded. Remember listening to it over and over with my wife, and we would only skip one song. Can't recall which one we did not totally dig, but the rest were magical. Hard rock, gorgeous lyrics, beautiful ballads - would rate it in my top five albums of all time definitely.
Daphne Descend is probably one of D’arcy’s favourite song. So when there was a mistake, she pointed out to Billy. Billy being the ever professional and perfectionist opted to play the song again. James always has such a dry humour with his "Captain & Tennile “ joke which likely got lost in translation. Wishing D’arcy well and safe in 2020 wherever she is mentality and spiritually. Hope she can guest play once in awhile with SP in the future.
The sound is so good - and this performance has so much feeling. Adore is just beautiful. Lucky people who were there for this - doesn't matter what language you speak.
Jimmy was probably laughing to himself "2 drummers in place of me and they still aren't that great"😄😄 And why did they keep doing Daphne Descends 3 Times Billy wanted it perfect or something lol 😂😂😂
To be honest, Kenny Aronoff is a very competent drummer. However the other guys were really questionable, playing some random sounds here and there, adding nothing
I agree. Great album even back then. Just unexpectinly soft. New metal pushed them into the ditch. ..and if D'arcy never left, they would have made a better machina album imo. If she didn't leave, the band would have stuck together imo. They would have taken their time on machina and released it years later and made a huge comeback. Just my theory
@Stepanov Rock idk she's got some amazing skills on the base. Especially during gish. And her looks could be half the reason why alot of guys like her imo. I mean let's face it, she was super hot
Gracias for uploading this, (with much better quality than my VHS copy), There you have drummer Kenny Aronoff (who just released a great book "Sex, drums & Rock and roll") and the great keyboard player Mike Garson, forever associated to David Bowie.
brandon242 the reason I got and failed at learning to play bass as a teenager. And when I tried again coupe years ago ... mostly pumpkins lines first. I’m no way near as sexy as d’arcy was though.
Even today, with Pumpkins on tour,it's D'Arcy Wretzky dominating the comments sections in recent vids of the band today.i saw Smashing Pumpkins in their hay-day.The Pheonix in Toronto Jan 1996.Mellon Collie Tour.Great band but D'Arcy was show stealer, for sure. She was fantastic on stage, everything she did.People weren't aware at the time the troubles in the band. That came to light a few months later during the summer.
No Jimmy aqui, no problemo on drums. Do not know why he was not here, but assuming it was because he was dealing with rehab and smack issues. This is all so gorgeous for this Canadian Pumpkins fan in Shanghai on a lazy hazy Thursday afternoon. Thanks guys!
Hey! The keyboard dude looks like 'Naked Man' in that awesome German TV live performance put out by the Pumpkins here on RU-vid on the Mellon Collie tour. Whaddup with that? Ha ha! 'Welcome to our circle of friends, welcome to our circle of friends, welcome to our circle of friends, welcome to our circle of friends, welcome to our circle of friends........' 'Live in Dusseldorf 1996.' Highly recommended to all SP and rock fans.
1997 sure did seem like a whacky time. Every time they spoke, a Spanish man would rudely speak over them. D'arcy dressed strangely, Jimmy wasn't there, Billy dressed really formal, there were too many drummers, and Billy sung really well, with a mixed infusion of the singing during the Mellon Collie and Machina eras. And James? Well, James, he was just James.
I could, and will make the joke that it took 3 percussionists to fill Jimmy's shoes. As for D'arcy, she always dresses strangely but it works for her. The Spanish dude is annoying. I'd rather hear what they have to say than a dude I can't even understand.
I think a whole lot was "lost in translation" during the after-show q & a. Many things that were meant to be an attempt at humor were getting little reaction, etc.
