I have an 140 cm (4.5 ft) dSMB that can be fully inflated with one lungful. It's quite skinny, so you don't need to pull that hard to make it stand up at the surface. I prefer a closed dSMB that's stitched on both sides. Mine's only got an oral inflation valve. You can't use your regulator or LPI to inflate it. In the dark you can clip a light or strobe to the top to make yourself even more visible. It'll light up the entire sausage like a lantern.

Excellent video and very helpful. Now I know the problems that I was having when using 6' for ascent.

awesome points, never thought about that, even if there are tons of people with the argument of bigger=more visible

I noticed that this past week doing a simulated deco during my sidemount certification. I will probably keep the 6’ for the surface and buy a smaller one for shooting deep like you’ve suggested. Thanks!!!

Nice visual @3:24 "It sits nice and proud on the surface" LOL... we got ya, Ben! :) This is great info, I only dive in the ocean and have large SMBs, but good to know the small ones aren't toys. Learn something new every day. Also good points about surface area in currents, haven't thought about that. Lastly, the color definitely matters, at least here in Florida. Bright reds/oranges are easier to see than yellow, for example. Both in sunny and dark conditions. Quick question: do you have an opinion on the cheap ~$20-40 SMBs with plastic valves vs something like the Carter Personal Float made of much thicker material, metal valve and so on? Thanks!

FINALLY a new video out! :-D I was told once that color can be important, especially when it´s getting darker. Then a pink smb will be easier visible. I haven´t tried it myself so can´t say for sure, but is that something you have noticed or thought about Ben? Also, really really think you should re-do your older danish videos into an understandable language, since they are really informative. :-)

Depends on the time of day and the direction from which people are looking at the dSMB. If they're looking into a low sun, a yellow dSMB can be really hard to spot. A darker color is better in that case. When it's around noon, or the sun is behind the boat, you want a bright dSMB. To me, orange and pink are the best colors for dSMB's as they stand out against blue and green water. I have a yellow one to indicate there's an emergency, but I use an orange dSMB as a marking buoy.

Is current that also why I’ve heard some divers prefer to use a 50lbs closed lift bag instead of an SMB?
