Thanks for sharing this, Zach. Fred was the best! Prior to about 1987 the smelt ran so heavy in the Carp river that I could barely lift the totally full net to shore on EVERY dip ( I was just a kid). Guys don't know what they're missing these days. Fred had a way of getting everyone fired up knowing where to go and what to do. The show really doesn't do a great job capturing the techniques like it used to.
I agree, I remember freezing my ass off and dipping as a young kid. The last successful time I remember and really went and any luck was around 1983 on one of the tributaries in Mackinaw City. Boy they sure are tasty.
HEY ZACH I WATCH YOUR DADS SHOW EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT IT WAS GREAT IT GAVE ME AND MY DAD AN UP DATE WHERE THE HUNTING WAS GOOD IN THE STATE AND THE FISHING REPORT THANK YOU
I knew some Smelt dippers and got to go one time. We dipped for hours and we got about 15 Smelt. We said let’s dip one more time each before we take off and we filled endless buckets in about 15 minutes. Cleaned smelt the next day and had Smelt all year long . I think the place we went was PT Peelee or something like that. Your dads show was awesome.
