A sequel could ruin it, this film delivered its message and story. If you expand its story we can get used to it, so it becomes banal and not so unsettling. We know the demon, we know its effects on people and we know what will happen in the future. If we give an accurate description of it by making more movies, we will understand it that much to make the scare disappear. This is just my opinion anyway, wanted to share it.

This movie was very surprising to me with how personal it got. I have a mom who ultimately passed due to the damage that alcoholism had done, and I am dealing with a very similar guilt - the scene between Rose and her “mom” hit home for me
@CorbCorbin
@CorbCorbin Год назад
Yeah, the only moment that had real weight, about why she’s so much more scarred than her sister, is when they reveal that she didn’t just find her mother, but refused to call 911. Just slamming the door, after telling her mom she sucks. Yeah, that’s going to stick with someone, if their mom was awake enough to tell them that she messed up and doesn’t want to die, and that person decided “no, I’m letting you die today mom.” I don’t like how they make the man from the psych ward, who she ultimately decides to kill, seem to see that she’s cursed. I’m just over mental illness being shown as a superpower, supernatural sight, or some type of advantage to have, at least over those without it, in a movie with such specific rules. Sorry about your mother, I’ve went through similar situations with a couple people I really loved, but not a parent. It’s very traumatizing when someone is hurting themselves, but is so gone that they don’t remember anything about what happened, so they have no memory of how bad off they are. The cycle just repeats, until something really bad happens. Even then, it can just feed the abuse.

I work at a movie theatre and I need to say how creepy the soundtrack is. Me and everyone of my co workers absolutely hated cleaning that theatre. It constantly felt like someone hovering over you or stalking with sounds jumping at you from all over the room that I can only explain as sounding like a hyena, ghoul, whispery. I also did a theatre check and it had some intense music building up with her trying to hold back her horror. For real. Especially in the beginning when Laura is constantly dismissed by Rose (a mental health professional). Poor woman is dealing with trauma and hallucinations and the best Rose can say is “I get it feels real” and “It’s okay” Like ma’am, it is not okay and it FEELS real because to them IT IS. Pushing away the actual issue is the opposite of what people should do for mental health, they should be looking into the issue, not going “It’s not real so you’re fine, just calm down”

This movie was truly amazing to watch because the real monster was not the demon but mental health (depression/trauma). Also another I noticed the reason why the monster chose a specific time to enter her was because it knew that it was gonna have an audience of the cop to carry on the curse!
@DeathnoteBB
@DeathnoteBB 5 месяцев назад
Imo the real monster was how badly our culture handles mental illness and trauma. Even her boss calls _the police_ when he’s convinced she’s a danger to herself or others. Rose (a professional therapist!) in the beginning fully dismisses Laura as having hallucinations and refuses to accept that for Laura it IS real, not just “feels” real, and just repeats that “it’s okay”. She even straight-up asks if her family hallucinates, too! Not even “Is there a history of mental illness in your family?” just flat-out “Okay so you’re crazy, is that a family thing, or…?” Laura even actually calms down when she thinks Rose is listening to her, but then freaks out and dies when she realizes Rose _isn’t_ listening. Likewise the whole movie nobody listens to Rose, either. That upset and scared me more than the entity! The entity is at least fictional, but the way people are treated for being mentally ill is very, very real.

You know, my biggest issue with this film was that I thought it should have been a horror comedy, I wished that they'd leaned more into how goofy everything was. @@lochofmceo I thought the reaction at the birthday party was humorous. I also thought that her relationship with the boyfriend was a joke. They made him out to be someone, that seems very unlikable, and who just wants to not have to deal with it. I saw nothing in why she’d have wanted to be with the man, aside from superficial things. It also wasn’t written to seem like they’d been together for very long, or at least not years. Her relationship with the cop, is immediately shown to be more easy going, and loving, within five minutes of introducing him. We don’t need a lot of backstory, but they not only made him seem already over her psychological problems, before the entity even has her, and they even made the actor look terrible.

Except this film has those things too, and the jump scares are often mixed in with very long, uninterrupted takes/scenes. I loved this movie, was genuinely surprised by how scary it was, but my only complaint would be when we get to see the "entity" at the end. I feel like it would have been much more creepy and much more effective if we just never actually got to see its true form. Because now it's like, well what is it? Is it a demon? Is it like Pennywise and it's otherworldly? An Alien? I thought it was way creepier just not knowing what it is, and letting your own imagination run free. Maybe if there's a sequel they can explain and go in depth more on what the creature actually is. And why it does what it does.

@MrJagermeister
@MrJagermeister Год назад
@@oliversedgwick7236 I think that definitely worked in their favor, that (while they did have to give up almost the entire first act of the film, they tried to not show much beyond it). Several years ago, I changed how I watch movies and while I used to be a massive fan of watching previews, I stopped watching them entirely. I’ve got half a dozen streaming services at home and I sub to AMC’s A-List for the theaters, so I can see up to 12 movies in premium 3D/Dolby/IMAX formats. So I now make my decision on what to watch based on who wrote/directed/starred in a film and what I thought of their previous work, and if I’ve not seen any of it, am I in the mood for a genre horror/sci-fi/comedy/drama/etc. movie that day. What I’ve realized is how much previews give away, from the best set pieces to all the actors that feature in the film (including the cameos), all the best scenes (often right up to the literal last scene in the movie like Quarantine and Passengers), the romances, the best jokes, the locations, new suits/powers for superhero stuff, and so much more. It’s like going in with a checklist of what to expect, and rather than having the film’s biggest scare occur organically while actually watching the film as opposed to seeing it out of context weeks or months before watching the rest of the movie, I would just tick off boxes of things I showed up expecting and all the surprise and excitement was sapped from it. (SPOILERS FOR BARBARIAN AHEAD PLEASE DON’T READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU’VE NOT SEEN IT). Going in to see Barbarian completely “blind” was a great experience because that entire first act was all about who could be trusted and what might be going on in the house. I think that even showing the actor that appears midway through the film would have made me realize it wasn’t a two-handler and destroy that shock of being pulled out of possibly THE most brutal scene in the entire movie just as you realize what kind of person Keith is, to pull back thousands of miles and introduce Long’s character and storyline and see how it tied back in. Seeing it blind had me watching every little move that Keith made because I suspected Skarsgard even though everything he did proved he was a good person, while Long is introduced literally having been accused of r*pe and it costing him his job, and when the moment comes in the movie to find out if he’s the kind of person that HE says he is, or the kind of person that OTHER people have accused him of being, the not knowing again made his actions in the final act that much more impactful. A week or two after the film released, they put out this preview which I think was very clever now that the cat was out of the bag as far as it not being just the two main actors in the film, while potentially drawing in a totally different kind of audience and sucker punching them with a horror show. That’s what I loved most about Barbarian. You didn’t know what to expect, how deep that cavern would go, how long these things had been going on, whether any of them would get out alive, what the motives of every character were, and so on. So even if the reveal of what was actually happening didn’t entirely land for me in the third act, I thought the job of getting me there and keeping me as surprised as possible totally justified everything else and made me appreciate the film that much more. But I genuinely think that the more previews I might have watched for the film, the less I’d have enjoyed it. So yeah, maybe try it for a movie or a month and a series of films… it’s especially difficult to block out Star Wars/Marvel/Disney and tentpole IP releases but you can block out keywords and search results and filter reddit and all the rest. Sometimes I have to just completely avoid social media for a while, as it’s always some asshole with a clickbait article titled “X’s surprising death scene in the movie!” Or “10 things you didn’t realize about X being the villain” and that kind of shit, just popping up on the side of the screen on a totally unrelated article that has nothing to do with what you were avoiding. But when you *can* avoid something entirely and go in as blind as possible, and it turns out to be a film like Barbarian, A Quiet Place 1+2, and so on… or even just getting to see something like The Batman with no preconceived expectations whatsoever… it makes it all worth while. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zUqIv5PvbGk.html

@MrJagermeister I understand that completely, I also have a cinema subscription type service (odeon limitless) so I can risk seeing things I don't know if I'll like, things previews/reviews said were bad, or even things I've never heard of besides scrolling screenings and seeing have just one or two showings. I go between 10-15 times a month so I'm not super picky. Tonight I saw Nocebo, which I didn't see a trailer for and got as far as the first review on imdb that said "don't read anything about this before seeing it" and genuinely really enjoyed it. Way more than I'd expected to. On the subject of that though, I see maybe 30 new trailers a month through being at the cinema, so it's difficult to avoid them 😅 but then I also don't mind going to see something and being disappointed because the more I see the more worth it the subscription is.

I did not like this move. I thought it was A HUGE missed opportunity. The curse isn't spread through the smile, it's spread by the person seeing a person die in front of them, that other person being the one cursed. The creature then goes to the affected new person and the cycle continues. 1) There should have been a "smile" in every background the main character was in. It should have been an easter egg for the audience, growing progressively more intense as the story says the monster does during the days it closes in on its subject. There were only a handful of "smiling" scenes, and the big one with the head at the car was totally our of character for the rest of the build up. 2) The woman who was affected was a psychiatrist. I thought that would lend itself to some interesting internal psychoanalyzing, but it didnt. She acted like every other person in a movie where they are around people who think they are crazy. 3) One of the visuals that REALLY stuck with me was the wrapping paper of the gift for her nephew. Yellow paper with brown dots. It was so odd, and by itself, it was fine, but when it was placed with all the other gifts, you saw how it stuck out. That same type of tension should have been throughout the entire movie and it wasn't. I will say, the practical affects were great.

At first I was "meh" and thought it was just hype. But as the movie went on, the meta concept impressed me. This entity is a fear monster. It's only goal is to scare through unreal images. Which is basically what a horror movie is. This makes it the ultimate horror movie monster. It's a movie monster that literally uses sound engineering and jump scares on it's victims.

This is coming out of left field for some, but i thought the movie was forgettable and slow mostof the time. It did give me anxiety while i watched it, but when the credits rolled i was left with alot of loose ends like the thing with the nephew that was just forgotten in the end and the whole relationship with the sister which just seemed expostional. The only things about this movie that i will remember was the sound work and the monster itself. I understand there was a deeper meaning but it mostly came across as flat for the most part. Unless you watched this in a movie theater, with a surround sound system and a big screen, or in complete darkness in the middle of the woods alot of the jumpscares didnt stick or where just annoying sounds that made the movie come off as superficial. It was a movie made to be watched at the theater and didnt transfer good for average at home watchers.
