SMILE is the fifth and last chapter of The Songbook Chronicles EP5 - Surrendering and it’s the first cover song of this project. It was written by Charlie Chaplin in 1936 for the movie Modern Times and inspired by Puccini’s opera Tosca, while the words were added 18 years later, in 1954 by John Turner & Geoffry Parsons: this song never ages and never will.
“In 2012 I had just finished playing a set at Umbria Jazz Festival and the US singers we were backing up were rushing to gather their things and leave the stage: “We gotta see papa Tony! “Who?” “Tony Bennett!”. We went to the arena and when he started singing Smile, eveyone had tears of joy in their eyes: I loved this song since and decided to recorded it with a real slow beat, the piano and a synth bass. When Pepe Ragonese, who I was playing with that night in 2012, heard the spacey version that was coming out he naturally joined with his beautiful trumpet sound and really gave this song that extra spark.” SirJo

SMILE è il quinto ed ultimo capitolo di The Songbook Chronicles EP5 - Surrendering ed è la prima cover di questo progetto. Fu scritta da Charlie Chaplin nel 1936 per il film Tempi Moderni e ispirata all'opera Tosca di Puccini, mentre le parole furono aggiunte 18 anni dopo, nel 1954 da John Turner e Geoffry Parsons: questa canzone non invecchia né mai invecchierà.
“Nel 2012 avevamo appena finito di suonare un set all'Umbria Jazz Festival e le cantanti americane che accompagnavamo si affrettavano a raccogliere le loro cose e a lasciare il palco: “Dobbiamo vedere papà Tony! "Chi?" “Tony Bennet!”. Siamo andati all'arena e quando ha iniziato a cantare Smile, tutti avevano lacrime di gioia negli occhi: ho amato questa canzone da allora e ho deciso di registrarla con un ritmo molto lento, il piano e un basso synth. Quando Pepe Ragonese, con cui stavo suonando quella sera del 2012, ha ascoltato la versione “spaziale” che stava uscendo, si è unito naturalmente con il suo bellissimo suono di tromba e ha davvero dato a questa canzone quella scintilla in più.” Sir Jo
