As you were explaining the movie, it seems to support my initial theory that the plot is an allegory for people who move through life acting like everything’s fine (“grinning & bearing it”) until it makes them crack mentally. That entity is similar to pride, which goeth before the fall. Those disingenuous smiles cover something much more sinister among those that SEEM like the perfect role models. A PhD student, a cop, a therapist, a professor… all supposedly intellectual/respected positions but people in those positions be twisted den a mf on the inside & all it takes sometimes is someone else’s trauma to trigger that spirit to surface. I’m gonna watch it still, spoiler and all. I love how you considered us who haven’t watch the whole thing yet, but we come here specifically for your tells lol

I was thinking the exact same thing. While I hate horror movies, I watched this one and loved the metaphor they were eluding to. Also the fact that we're the ones who gives trauma it's power over out lives. It was dope to me. 👌

That first scene where that chick is just standing in the dark in the kitchen looking at her, that's my favorite shot of the movie as well, and the way they shot it and the camera work, it was so great, letting the tension build and the camera slowly pans and doesn't cut, and then they let it linger, freaking loved it. Reminded me of the scene in Hereditary when they girls just up in the corner in the bedroom.

I haven’t seen smile, but when I saw the trailer I knew it would be creepy. And im never creeped out by horror movies. But I always felt like the best horror movies are made from turning things that are ubiquitous or non threatening into being disturbing. If you can turn an everyday item or occurrence into something that triggers fear or at least kinda creeps you out, that’s a winner in my book. And the marketing for this movie was amazing. Having ppl stand at sporting events and smile through the entire thing while looking at the camera. That was one of the dopest things I’ve seen in a while.

Lol this review didn't miss a beat. And yes, thank you for addressing the lack of horror recognition in Hollywood. And Toni Collette is one of many recent iconic performances stacking up. Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out, Essie Davis in Babadook, Maika Monroe in It Follows, Lupita Nyong'o in Us, Florence Pugh in Hereditary, Gong Yuu in Train to Busan to name some more. Horror is dominating but I guess the critics are too scared to watch the movies 🤷‍♀️

I feel that it was really good because it wasn’t the typical horror film. It casted a cure more so on mental health more that ominous horror. In the end, she ended up being consumed by her own mental breakdown from seeing a patient kill themself right in front of her. Think about it. Her mother had mental issues as well, and her sister (and therapist) said she took after her. Just like “Us”. People made it overrated because they wanted it to be that overly scary film, when it was just a good dobbleganger classic. I loved it.
@lessismore8533
@lessismore8533 2 года назад
I agree with part of this. But its definitely not the only horror film that has a main goal that isn’t just scaring ppl. For Smile, it was mental health (tho some ppl felt they approached it insensitivity) but for other Horrors it was something else. When I remember examples I’ll come back. But the mental health thing alone is not enough to call it a “classic”. Smile derives from SO many other horror films it’s crazy. It Follows, Fallen, Drag me to Hell, truth or dare, Ring, It, and Lights Out and couple more. Now I know every film has atleast one inspo so that’s fine or even 2. Nothing wrong with it but Smile got the longest list I’ve seen so it owes lots of its success to those movies before it. Apparently if the mental health subject was enough to get movie standing on 2 feet , Parker (his 1st film) would’ve only done that. But apparently felt he needed all those influences. So no Smile isn’t original enough to be a Classic. It took a specific scare out of It follows. But I feel horror been declining lately so Smile was nice. Same for black phone.

It's the consistent eye contact and manufactured grin held too long that makes a smile creepy. Had a issue with a woman placing herself in my private stairwell at all hours. She would leave but hang around out of sight, my neighbors keep catching her lingering after repeatedly being asked to leave. She screams to herself things people shouted at her, sometimes in another language. This is daily. Just the other day I saw her coming through the alleyway I grabbed my items and quickly locked the gate behind me. This lady powerwalked into a jog towards my stairwell just to peek her head around the corner and made direct eye contact while simultaneously smiling at me. When I say she had me shook I mean that. She produced this eerie smile saying nothing, just staring not blinking smile affixed like only someone out of their mind. With all that said I still plan to see this movie. I'm sure it will deliver.

My daughter and I went to see Smile yesterday, we loved it..... We might be a little too silly because we were definitely laughing at moments that we shouldn't have been lol, but all in all I would've given it a solid 🎷🎷🎷🎷, jus because of the ending. I legit thought she beat it, but having that be an illusion was a mad dope twist...... Also the girl that was smiling from the birthday party, her face stuck with me more than the girl she saw kill herself...... Dope movie overall, definitely recommend it

I like the movie, the way it developed, the storyline, and of course the scary parts. I agree about the fear betrayed in scary movies, it does look exhausting. I liked how crazy she seemed, she did a hell of a job. I liked that each character evoked some type of feeling from me whether I liked them or not. I still want to see Barbarian right quick. I watched Terrifier 2. It had some good parts but the movie had some majorly unbelievable parts which was upsetting to me. The first one was fire though.
