Smiley's first single, but second video. This was re-released after the success of 'Police Officer'. Directed by Giblets who were: Rob MacGillivray, Mike Sumpter, Carol MacGillivray and Michael Olley. Like Police Officer, this was made while we were still at Saint Martins School of Art. Not sure the 'batty man' reference was ever picked up by TV stations at the time, you wouldn't get away with it now. We tried to make it as subtle as we could in the animation.
Smiley was a talented and charming man. Sadly missed.

Only heard about him after his death. He was an incredible talent. ‘Police Officer’ was great but this is genius in the way it translates between two marginalised dialects/languages and has a lot of fun with it, and also compares the ‘underworld’ in different cultures. ‘Dem say Old Bill/We say Dutty Babylon!’

Not true, Allen & Blewitt - Chip Shop Wrapping and David Baird - Friday Neet (Gannin Tapping In The Toon). Both songs from 1980, they used British accents. Barnsley Bill - Barnsley Rap & Barnsley Bill - Wedding Rap from 1981 as well. They were the first MC's to use British accents on a track. However, they were novelty songs that didn't have a lasting impact, unlike "Cockney Translation".

To CJ Run: Speaking of the British v Jamaican Accent and parlances. Interesting in that era, closer to the real old-time Cockney; now today's "Cockney" isn't purely so -- it's rummaged in with the Jam-African mix-up. When they do speak London, they sound West Indian.
