@@salvador_69.11 🙄😒 I’m sure Hollywood made “ Bad impressions” of prehistoric creatures before, but paleontology was done first, then we had a little fun. Of course, there’s more to a prehistoric creature that meets the eye. Some of us see it both ways
These guys were pretty much like any cat, their playful curious and yes will bite ya. Heck I would not be amazed if these guys at times used these big armadillos like scratching post for their claws
Yeah i liked this one. TBH other than the dinosaurs the rest of the animals got nice designs. The CGI needed more time to be pollished though, specially in the feathers/hair department.
@@mehmetgurdal terrible lol Prehistoric Planet set a high standard for future prehistoric documentaries and reconstructions. You can tell that they tried to stay as accurate as possible on this one (for the most part, since Allosaurus is just Godzilla basically) but the technology for Prehistoric Planet (and probably the bugdet and time invested on it) is way superior.
Doedicurus is a giant ancient relative of the Armadillo, though it weighs almost 300 times as much, about the size of a car. It’s spiked tail club, alone, can weigh 40 kilos, as much as a cannonball. Although fearsome defensive weapons against predators like Smilodon, the males often use them on each other, to batter rivals into submission, during hormone-fueled jousts for a mate.
Doedicurus isn’t ancient from an evolutionary or ecological perspective. It’s modern, because it evolved and lived at the same time as most animals alive today.
@@-draco-469well yes they are cus they are still cats but they are a different branch than all living cats but they are still related just way further out than most people thought
@@-draco-469 they aren't closely related they are very far off but nonetheless they are still cats so they are going to have some sort of relation regardless although it is probably a decent bit further out than we would be to the great apes
Is it just me or do the mammal and mammal like ancestors in this series just look particularly good compared to the other prehistoric animals in this series? Like it’s really clear that mammals are the animators real area of expertise?
It might also be partially because we tend to know how dinosaurs look better, since they're more popular. But maybe not. Maybe you know a ton about extinct mammals. If so then if you think the mammals look better, I suppose that they genuinely DO just look better. But I mostly know how dinosaurs looked, so I'm mostly guessing with the other animals! From what I can tell, all the synapsids looked better than the reptiles did. Even the lystrosaurus and gorgonopsid looked good. I actually loved the gorgonopsid. First time I've seen it depicted on TV with obscured fangs. I never really understand why they're often represented completely exposed since they're not that long compared to the length of their chin. They should be easy to cover unlike a smilodon's fangs.
It would have been funny if the Smilodon started sharpening his claws on one of the Doedicurus' shell. They would have been able to feel through them, like how modern armadillos can, so a Smilodon scratching on the shell would still hurt like a motherfucker, which would have warranted a thwack with a tail club, or getting bucked off.
Except that Smilodon was unlike any cat we know today, they were from a different lineage entirely. Despite being depicted as very cat-like and even living in prides in almost every form of media, it's believed that Smilodon, particularly the largest species, like Populator, were solitary and may have behaved in a manner similar to bears, typically slow, lumbering animals but fast as lightening when they needed to be.
I’m glad that the Doedicurus actually have an armor-plated “helmet” on the tops of their heads, which was bizarrely missing in the model from Walking with Beasts (2001).
I love how they act as animals. Yes, they might be a bit bigger and toothier, but this is simply very big cat. Curious and probably looking for breaking up the boredom. Also models are more than decent! I´ve seen the very first CGI back then and blown me away. Every paleontologist can use to certain extent his or her own imagination how they looked like. And I like this one! The whole scene was hilarious! I absolutely adore the author´s sense of humour!
It’s like watching those videos of Lions Tigers & Leopards playing with a cardboard box, they just look silly trying to figure out what this is. Smilodon doesn’t know what these giant Armadillos are.
I don't know if you noticed but they made sounds like a cougar to this smilodon. which ironically is correct because the ability to roar is unique to pantherines and smilodon is not a pantherine
Females in cats and fish display a lot more curiousity than males who usually are more fight and mate. Beautiful curiousity. These were on the Island of Trinidad and Mastadons, even giant sloths, wonderif Smilodon was aswell
Сколько в мире животных о которых мы еще не слышали и не видели созданных Творцом! : "Как многочисленны твои дела, Господи! Во всём видна твоя мудрость. Земля полна твоих творений."
The funny thing is that the armadillo can 100% feel the scratching, which probably hurts like hell and will probably wants to club the Smilodon for real
Only in this scene, there are tons of examples that are the exact opposite of this in the show. Lystrosaurus being portrayed as a Permian equivalent to the dodo bird, Smilodon hunting a Phorusrhacid, a singular Cave Lion taking down an adolescent Mammoth.
Imagine your this Doedicurus just going about your day when suddenly, a massive cat with fangs that are disproportionately huge comes along and starts playing with ya.. I’d be so confused and probably a little scared
Whoever did the animation really know cats. I can imagine a catzilla doing exactly the same. Also, the kitty probably thought 'why is my new warm nap rock moving!?' At the end.
This exactly shows sabertooths weren't bloodthirsty killers, they are well big cats, like our kitty cats, they are curious abt anything, but being bloodthirsty when needed
They got the cat mannerisms down pat. Btw, it's interesting how this recreation of a smilodon looks rather hyena-like, with the spinal mane, the spots in its fur and the similar posture. I wonder if that was on purpose.
