In the run-up to the release of his debut album 'blkswn' earlier this year, St. Louis-based rapper Smino dropped his single “Anita.” The track is produced by Monte Booker, and is named after legendary singer-songwriter Anita Baker. Smino previously explained that the track was partially inspired by the 2016 film Hidden Figures, and he further broke down his meaning behind the song to Genius.

I am shook this song dropped 6 years ago??! Time really flies. BUT man do I love me some Smino! Me and my bf went to see him last year in March 2023 and it is Jan 2024 and I am still wanting to chase the high I felt when I was at his concert. He was with JID and it was just an amazing experience. I was faded once Smino came on and JID acknowledged me in the crowd and I got it on video :P anyways, glad to see Smino still doing well 6 years after this interview
