This is a how to video detailing how to fully disassemble the Smith and Wesson M&P 5.7 pistol. This pistol is relatively new to the market and their is no disassembly and reassembly videos online, nor any parts diagrams, parts lists, or exploded diagrams. Decided to make this video series to help anyone having trouble with it. Part 1 will be disassembly and Part 2 will be complete reassembly.

My absolute favorite part of this video is hearing Metallica come on the speakers. Great video and great band! Thanks man!

Thank you so much for this vid. I consider myself pretty competent when it comes to nearly all pistol disassemble processes. I couldn't for the life of me get the mainspring knut to loosen. I do all my own triggers, and wanted to polish everything in the firing mechanism. Now I can. 🙏 Thank you Sir!

nice video, i would like to point out that the barrel thread protector is a 9/16 12-point wrench, and it has loose enough tolerance to put some tape around the protector so as to not damage its finish

Good information to know! Never even thought about trying a 12 point wrench. I planned to refinish it anyways so didn't mind it getting a little scratched up. Thank you for the information!!!

Thank you for the video, I've been looking for this information for a little while now. I'm extremely dissatisfied with S&W's decision to make the firing pin plunger out of plastic in this model. Mine has already sheared itself in half. I'll be uploading my first video, exposing the failure after I receive the parts in the mail. Now I'll know what I'm doing when it arrives.
@SmittysGunsmithin
@SmittysGunsmithin Год назад
As was I. I think making the block safety out of plastic was pretty stupid to be honest. Sorry to hear yours sheered, but as soon as I saw the design i knew it would be a future failure point. Glad my video was able to help you! Out of curiosity, is S&W sending you the parts in the mail? I know most manufacturers are funny about that. Really hoping someone makes a stainless steel upgrade.

@@SmittysGunsmithin I called customer support and they agreed to send me 2 replacements. I'm going g to replace the defective one and use the 2nd to attempt to machine one following the oem design.. idk if I'll be successful but if I am ill start pumping some out for the market. I kinda want to ask them to send me a complete parts kit, just to have one incase shipping breaks down again..

Thank you for this video. I really needed guidance because my firing pin broke at just over the 400 round mark. I am putting in for Smith & Wesson warranty repair. I was wondering if you had any customers with this same problem?
@SmittysGunsmithin
@SmittysGunsmithin 7 месяцев назад
I don't have customers yet as I'm in the process of getting set up to get my FFL so I can go into business. I simply do this as a hobby for no profit currently. Havnt ran into any repair issues yet or heard of any firing pin breakage with this model yet. 400 rounds firing pin breakage is crazy. That shouldn't happen. My guess would be improper heat treat from factory. If it gets repaired and it breaks again, I would see if I could find an aftermarket one. Might be hard. There's no reason a firing pin should be breaking at that low a round count.

Is there any chance I can retrofit a manual safety on one of these? It appears to have the blanks in place on the frame, but i'm not sure from the video if it would require a completely different sear housing or if the parts can be added to the existing sear housing... thanks!
@SmittysGunsmithin
@SmittysGunsmithin 3 месяца назад
I'm not sure. I havn't even held a model with the thumb safety to see how they are designed. What I do know is S&W will not sell the thumb safety nor will they go back and add one to a firearm that wasn't made with it. Can it be done? Yes, absolutely. If you can find a thumb safety used for sale, have the capability to manufacture one or pay someone to, and potentially with some modification to the firearm. Is it gonna be easy, cheap, or practical? Not likely.

@@SmittysGunsmithin Well damn! I didn't expect it would be that difficult. I don't own one yet but i was hoping to purchase one of the FDE versions and add a manual safety. I guess thats not really an option... Thanks for the information!

Do you know of any aftermarket triggers that are compatible with the M&P 5.7? There are a few for the M&P 2.0 (9mm models) but wasn't sure if they'd be compatible with the 5.7.
@SmittysGunsmithin
@SmittysGunsmithin 9 месяцев назад
I'm not sure. I havn't specifically heard of anything and a Google search didn't yield anything. I havn't done any trigger work on S&W semi autos since their first generation M&P years ago so I couldn't tell you if other M&P triggers would work in this or not. My 5.7 had a nice pull out the box, and I'm a trigger snob. M&P 2.0 triggers are a vast improvement over S&W past. I imagine a nice flat trigger would be awesome though.

I've seen a few questions about adding a safety, but my model has a safety and I'd like to remove it. Think it's doable?
@SmittysGunsmithin
@SmittysGunsmithin 2 месяца назад
I do not know if in fact you can get the frame plugs from Smith and Wesson or not, but according to this possibly you can. But if you can get the filler plug for the frame, remove the safety and I think the detent and spring that holds safety in two positions, yes you should be able to. www.mp-pistol.com/threads/the-proper-way-to-remove-plug-thumb-safety.31812/
@SmittysGunsmithin
@SmittysGunsmithin 2 месяца назад
I would not remove the safety without ensuring you have a frame plug. Otherwise you will leave an opening for things to get in there and jam up the mechanisms.

But did you actually need to clean it or you just wanted to take it apart. ?
@SmittysGunsmithin
@SmittysGunsmithin 11 месяцев назад
It's actually recommended to at least field strip all new firearms and clean them before shooting to remove any extra oils, grease, dust, packing materials, and possibly metal shavings left over from manufacturing process. Most user manuals will advise you to do same. Being a gunsmith, I broke it all the way down to thoroughly clean everything and inspect everything.

@SmittysGunsmithin
@SmittysGunsmithin 11 месяцев назад
So S&W contacted me back promptly. They advised they do not sell safeties aftermarket for liability reasons, they advised they also do not add them to non safety models as part of their services. If you could get your hands on one second hand, I think it might work. But not having seen how this specific model safety is designed, I can't say for certain. Best answer I can get for you currently.

I too think it could be done, like you said, however, good luck finding a safety to try it. If I could find one, I'd try it on mine. I specifically wanted the non safety model though.
