My late friend, a cop & tac squad training officer outfitted me with this model for concealed carry. I'm so grateful he did! Thank you for upping my confidence with this demo!
No he's an i***t and you should ditch the gun immediately for a .380 or a 9 mm (or perhaps a .38). It has about 2.5 less energy than a comparable 9 mm and nowhere near enough power to deal with a man or a large dog.
I say this is the best carry self defense gun against assailants that don't have guns themselves. The 22 mag is enough to injure and also kill with good shot placement, but has a lot less collateral damage compared to 38 special, 9mm, 357 and even 380.
Very much so appreciate that! I think it's an excellent lil carry or backup piece for anyone! I like the way yours looks with the titanium cylinder, that's pretty cool!
I have carried a smith revolver every day for 20 years. I started out with a 642 went to a 640 now a 351pd. I like the extra capacity, and the weight in gym shorts
I love my 351c. I carried it a lot this summer. I plan on carrying it in a jacket pocket as a bug this winter. I just picked up a 3" Taurus 942 in 22 magnum. It has been a nice revolver so far. It carries 8 rounds but is a lot heavier than the S&W.
Yeah in my opinion you just can't beat the smith quality or the weight but I did just see one of those Taurus ones at my shop and it looked pretty decent for half the price!
The lock is easy to eliminate. Done it. Don't let that stop you from buying a S&W. If you take the actual key lock that the key fits there are after markets blanks. No big deal. The trigger is or can be heavy heavy heavy. LCR 327 magnum has a very very nice trigger for an older lady and S&W long will match the 22 mag and shoots nice. You can also up the power to 32 H&R magnum and 327 magnum. Cost less. Note the LCR 327 weights 17.1 oz's plus ammo.
Love this gun. 2 mods I strongly recommend. 1. Get the ClipDraw- let’s you carry without holster IWB like a folder knife clip. Super easy install. And that’s good when you’re just wearing jogging or sports shorts. 2. Get the pachmyr Guardian grip with pop out pinky if you have larger hands. That way it’s easily concealable. Full disclosure I just got the Ergo Delta for it to try that as well. My theory with 22mag defensively is I practice starting first shot at pelvis and working up the torso to the head with all 7 shots. Can also practice 2 pelvis, 2 stomach, 2 chest, 1 in face.
For reliability can't beat a revolver. I compared the 351C to 43C & bought the 43C because the ammo availability. Also the CCI Velocitor ammo for 22LR is above 1600 fps & watched those rounds get expansion in a gel / meat targets. Those hot CCIs also penetrated over 12 inches which is the FBI requirement. The cost factor is a negative that I can justify.
Great video, I absolutely love Smith & Wesson revolvers. Just picked up M&P Shield for $395, and they had a Smith & Wesson 642 that was used in the store for $495 not sure why the price was so high for the revolver for some reason, in some ways I still think that the revolver is better than a semi-auto.
That is really high for one of those. My local shop sells them new for less than that but yeah at the end of the day those smith snubs are excellent carry guns!
A Federal Punch 22 mag from that gun penetrates exactly the same as a Federal Punch 22lr from a 43c running the standard FBI gel test. 22 mag really outshines 22lr in a rifle barrel but it's a waste of money in a barrel this short. Just more blast and recoil for zero benefit at a much higher cost in range ammo. Magnum powders burn slower so it really takes barrel length to see the benefit of the magnum round plus the 43c gives you one more round. It's a win-win to stick to 22lr in a barrel this short.
I bought the 351C BECAUSE both CCI & Hornady made a bullet specifically designed for a short barrel. I'm also the reason the 351C finally got on the stupid California Gun Roster. Federal came out with a short barrel 22 Magnum in their 'Punch' line, which in tests is a little faster than the CCI. So a little more power too. A nickel case & hollow point. However, impossible to find. P.S. As much as I love my J Frames, the Ruger LCR has a better trigger. In my opinion, their trigger is as good as the Kimber K6 for hundreds less. And if the 351C is used as a CCW, it will probably be used at 3 feet or less. The guy saying "give me your money" won't be standing across the street. And in CA, just wearing a T Shirt, so penetrating a 2x4 & 3 layers of denim, really doesn't matter. Like I said...I LOVE my J Frames.
I agree with your idea of a 22 mag being a great ccw gun I have been a ccw for 40 years and weight on my old hips and back are a big deal I have a safe full of bigger guns that i cant carry anymore both the sw 43c and the 351pd are my carry guns now with 2 10 round speed strips when you are 74 all i can deal with is making sure my wife is safe and myself Im not protecting the world anymore let the tactical ninjas do that great vid
I probably speak for others when I say, I have the 22lr Ruger LCR, with plenty of ammo too. Getting this would be about 800 just for the gun, plus a few hundred for ammo. In that regard, is it worth the jump? In line with that, speaking of the hottest stuff in 22lr, such as Punch, Interceptors, Velocitors, etc, how much better performance will you get with the Mag?
I wish this gun came in a 3 inch version. I own one, and it's actually pretty accurate. I carry it a lot when I don't want to carry one of my semi automatics. Very comfortable to conceal. My sister has the 351pd with the rosewood grips and fiber optic front sight. They both shoot very well, but hers has an exposed hammer, so she can shoot single action or double action. Mine is snag proof, but you get some very precise shots when you cock the hammer on hers. I highly recommend either one. I shoot speer gold dot 22 mag ammo in mine, and my sister shoots a hornady 22 mag bullet with a polymer red tip. Both are very accurate.
@@dougcobb8114 Be more specific on what you mean by "why". I've already explained to you that a 3" barrel would give a better sight radius, and would more than likely add even more accuracy and velocity.
I've done alot of 22 Mag testing out of little guns and even with the limitations of the short barrel, it punches above its weight. This hammerless design is just about ideal for anything but perhaps a trail gun.
Question. In your opinion, a 45grain 22 magnum at 1150fps compared to a 60 grain 32acp at 850fps. Shouldn't muzzle energy be pretty close between the 2?
@@ebjornnelson Thanks, but the video and my question & reply is about a J Frame with a barrel less than 2 inches. About 1150fps is the best you'll get out of the Federal Punch 22 Mag from a 351C.
Best way to deal with the internal lock if there is no other option is to remove it. I did that on my 340PD when I was changing the spring. Removing it has absolutely no effect on the operation of the gun except you don't have to worry about the lock accidentally engaging and you don't have to worry about having the key. There's even a replacement plug available for the "Hillary Hole."
@@TerriblyTactical I fully understand your position. Why should S&W be rewarded for caving to that Clinton era nonsense twenty years after he left office? But if you want a particular type, weight, and caliber of revolver sometimes I'm willing to compromise. My compromise consisted of removing that stupid lock.
I say this is the best carry self defense gun against assailants that don't have guns themselves. The 22 mag is enough to injure and also kill with good shot placement, but has a lot less collateral damage compared to 38 special, 9mm, 357 and even 380. I would carry sw 351c and the 28 ounce 3in colt king cobra 357 mag as backup if i encounter an assailant with a gun. carrying both of these in separate areas on the body is definitely comfortable, and you have the right self defense tool for the right situation.
I think it's an excellent option for a lot of scenarios but if this is what it takes for people to have it all day everyday than it sure beats the big bad gun left at home!
@@TerriblyTactical The purpose of a self defense handgun is to just get out of a bad situation in order to call for help. I don't think you should be planning for an extended shootout like all these semi-auto carriers fantasize about. Unless you are law enforcement that do need long shootout capabilities, revolvers are superior to semi-auto for EDC self defense.
The only thing that's made me feel bad about this gun is the price tag lol I assume its probably got to do how detailed the construction has to be with how lightweight it is, or possibly the aluminium alloy its made out of could be pricey. Either way I needed a gun I could take with me everywhere, and this fits the bill perfectly.
i believe with 22lr you lose only like 25% of velocity compared to 22mag when firing from such a short barrel. i got 43c instead of 351c because with40g minimags(most reliable, most powerfull ammo for short barrel), it should, within 70 meters, still penetrate deep enough. of course the bullet wont leave "the body", but that is a plus in my opinion. and you have +1 capacity :o what i dont like about the gun is the firing pin, i think it should hit harder and be wider (so it crushes larger area, maybe something like a double pin, or U pin would be nice so it would minimalize the chance of primer malfunction due to separation)
Lucky Gunner did some testing on those rounds and a .22 Mag with a short barrel snubby got in the high 1000s FPS. The .22 long rifle was the low 900s. So with a .22 Mag you get an extra 150 FPS give or take (from a short barrel)
@@LA_Commander i have read some discussion somewhere, a doctor was saying that he would be rather shot by 45acp than 22lr because 22lr is weak and bounces inside the body. maybe less power is sometimes better. mags are definitely more powerful. if it would be 100x more powerful, would it be good or bad? what can 22 mag do that 22lr cant?
I shoot couple hundred rounds for different sessions 30 and 35 grains cci mini mags at range until something sting my hand. After inspecting I noticed powder flame cuts through frame on top and on cylinder chipping aluminium. I was really surprised. Never use anything less than 40 grains. You’ll ruin the revolver and hands!
Have been thinking about one of these 351Cs instead of a .380 ACP since lighter, easier back on target, 7 rounds (except for p365 or new Ruger .380 most .380s are 6-8 rounds) smaller footprint, can be fired at point blank range, and if you pick up something like a Henry lever action, pump action, or a Marlin or other bolt action you have a great varmint gun with all the velocity. Last I checked no one is selling .380 rifles (and I believe the .22 mag was made for rifles originally). Good review and discussion mr. Terribly Tactical...bet you have done it before, but maybe another Sunday night discussion about the smallest calibers might be a good discussion (or maybe argument like the union vs. non-union....LOL). Thanks sir!
From S&W's web site. "Q: Can I dry fire my Smith & Wesson? A: Yes, except for the .22 caliber pistols which includes models 22A, 22S, 422, 2206, 2214, 2213 and 41. .22 caliber revolvers such as models 17, 43, 63, 317 and 617 also should not be dry fired. Q: Why can't I dry fire my .22 pistol or revolver? A: Dry firing a S&W .22 pistol or revolver will cause damage to the firing pin."
I absolutely love this revolver. It won’t pull your shorts down at the Wally World and the XS dot is awesome and the revolver is like shooting rubber bands off your finger . I love my Jframes but I think though the 22mag is louder than 22lr I don’t think it’s louder than a 38 and obviously 357, so maybe it wouldn’t be like a flash bang going off if you use it in your vehicle in say a carjacking scenario .
Looks like a great revolver especially in .22 Caliber since 22LR can be found relatively cheap. The S&W 351C is a little pricey for a .22 Cal revolver, but it's about the same price as the Ruger LCR. I was hoping that the Taurus 942 22LR would be a decent pistol, but the RevolverGuy gave it a poor review, because of the slop in the forcing cone.
man you have a solid rotation, based on your bodyguard video, i see your a smith fan lol, when you use this is a back up gun, do you still carry a spare mag for your semi auto carry or soley rely on this for back up
Save up and stop spending money on random lil stuff. It adds up quick! Patience is a virtue and you can make it happen if ya really wanted! I personally think it's worth every single penny!
Same revolver in .22 LR gives you 8 significantly cheaper rounds. I know he covered that .. Just say'n. One more round without much practical difference out of the really short barrel. I don't disagree with anything else.
@@TerriblyTactical Yep , the model 43C by Smith & Wesson has been demonstrated to be effective as a CCW. Have 22LR semi autos that I like to shoot at the range ( Ruger SR22 & Taurus TX 22 ).
Great review. Can tell this guy really knows his stuff 👍🏼 Only 2 issue I have with the 351’s is 1. The price and 2. The atrociously heavy trigger pull, like you mentioned. It’s hard to enjoy a gun with a 15 lb trigger pull and 1.78” barrel lol.
@@SC93-85 Got the 43C 8 round 22LR fully loaded its 11.4 ounces. So the 351C would be around 12+ ounces. Also Wilson Combat sells a trigger kit that lets you choose between 3 trigger springs. I think the trigger is now around 8 to 9 pounds on my 43C.
@@SC93-85 1st range day coming soon. The snap caps I bought though all have consistent strikes marks. The other people that installed this kit all gave good reviews at Wilson Combat.
You know, I'm probably weird in that I like both these little mouse guns, and .45s for carry. For whatever reason, I've always liked the 351C, it's just a wonderful little buddy to have on hand. As for 22 magnum's performance, I mean, yeah, it's not the best, but it's about like .380, which I think is good enough, and it sure beats harsh language.
great review, didnt realize you could "stage it" to do modified single action, that probably helps with on target range accuracy quite a bit. for combat use i doubt itll ever see much use but great to have/know about none the less. thanks for sharing
@@TerriblyTactical you're welcome! I just uploaded a new video of me shooting my Smith and Wesson model 4566tsw converted to 45 Super for the first time!
@@TerriblyTactical the power off 22 mag is almost double witch is nice, however the cost and availability of .22 lr is better... If you could only pick one witch would be you pick? I’m thinking about getting a 351 if I can find ammo first. I would want a least a 1k of ammo.
Your camera constantly focusing, is really detrimental to a good review. Your point on arthritis, is not really accurate, as it is trigger pull weight that will be an issue, as opposed to recoil or gun weight. Trust me, I know "firsthand".
Jason K, I respectfully disagree with your point about arthritis affecting trigger pull vs recoil. I have arthritis (inflammation) in my finger/hand joints, including finger I use for trigger. I had enough pain in my hand/forearm after shooting a 442 that I needed Tylenol and a heating pad afterward. Every single shot was very painful. That is why I am really interested in this video about the 351-C. I like the simplicity and dependability of a revolver.
@@ADayInTheLifeofLori If that is your issue, you should really get a soft shooter, like the S&W Shield Ez in .380. A semi auto will give you much less felt recoil, compared to a revolver.
Lol you dont know where my face was and I was perfectly safe. That is also an untrue statement to say never because there are plenty of instances when you have to look down the bore. Stfu dork.
Ha ha... Never heard the term "Hillary hole" before, but it's damned appropriate. I got rid of a S&W J-frame that had one. It's a non-starter for any wheel gun, as far as I'm concerned.
@@TerriblyTactical I only need enough for if someone breaks in. I am not a big gun person. so that's the exact reason I bought this one. I like that someone with WAY more experience likes it! I am going with your ammo recommendation.
