I use the cast bullet muzzle-brake exclusively as it seals the ports at the top of the barrel and extend a short distance in front with a muzzle vent. It also shoots jacketed bullets just as well so no need for the jacketed bullet only muzzle-brake to be used. Adds about an inch to barrel length to make the barrel a full four inch length in use.
I have a 500 S&W X-frame with a 6.5 inch half-lug barrel and integral compensator ports on each side of the front sight. Love mine and it's quality. Have customized mine to my tastes.
My FFL just received mine. Can't wait to get it. I'll be hand loading for this monster. I already load for the 50 Beowulf so I already have the components.
been doing research on this hand cannon because I'm in the market for another hard hitter. I love the .454 but I want more and hitting your mark with a ton and a quarter foot pounds of force just sounds perfect. thanks for the video. you have another subscriber!
I have the exact same gun but mine has the unfluted cylinder, which adds a bit more weight to mitigate recoil. I handload both cast and jacketed bullets with complete satisfaction. And, although the 50AE and 500 both use .500" bullets, the 50AE maxes out at about 350 grains, although I have loaded 385 grainers successfully. The 500 is just getting started with 350 grains, and goes as high as 700 grains, although I haven't used any that heavy. It is an attention-getter at the range.
Just picked up my M500 this last Thursdays luckily I only paid $63 for 50 rounds of 500 Mag at a local ammo place. I'm waiting for them to get the case of 250 rounds for only $248 that's band new 300 grain ammo that's a great price!
i want the 8 inch version. mostly because I value the way I look at the moment, but If I got a cc permit, I would have to carry this in my winter jacket or some shit just for shits and giggles.
S&W 500, definitely a buy in the future. I think we saw the same video and I want the one in the video. Dropped that bear like a ton of bricks for sure. One hit hahaha crazy.
You mentioned the desert eagle ammo has the same diameter but shorter. I was wondering can you shoot that ammo thru the 500 S&W. Like in the 357 which you can shoot 38. Nice video.
Sadly you can't because the 500 magnum is a rimmed cartridge and the .50AE is not. The .50AE is too short and would just slide back and fourth in the cylinder and the firing pin wouldn't strike the primer.
True, but they are way cheaper than other ammo. The range near me is indoor and you can only shoot paper so there is no need for more energy. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Unless you've had a lot of practice with that gun, it isn't the kind of firearm for home and personal defense. It's recoil is so stout that you might end up getting hurt or the gun may slip away from your hands, the overpenetration associated with that gun is a HUGE problem, it's expensive, its live ammo is also expensive and not always available in many sporting goods stores, and it is heavy.
***** I can understand your concern, and yes, you can disable or kill the attacker with just one round out of the .500 Magnum. But the overpenetration of that "hand cannon" is a huge problem. You could end up hitting another person (it could be your loved one or an innocent person), because the bullet coming out of a .500 Magnum will simply pass through the body of the attacker and exit out on the other side with enough velocity to kill another person. Unless you live by yourself in the country and there are no other people living with you, I won't recommend the .500 Mag.. IMHO, the .500 Magnum is best left for big-game hunting. I won't recommend the .44 Magnum either since the overpenetration is a big problem too. The .357 Magnum should be adequate for home and personal defense. The overpenetration can be a problem if you're using ballpoint rounds, but if you're using hollow point rounds it shouldn't be a problem. You can shoot .38 Special rounds out of the .357 Mag.. They're less expensive than the .357 rounds. Personally, I prefer a revolver over a semi-auto because if you have to fire follow-up shots, a semi-auto may jam. So that's my take.
+shikat2371 That is extremely sound/good advice. I 'was' of the train of thought that I need a .500 Cal. to stop a home invader with one round. Observing other videos of the .500 Mag show an incredible recoil. How about a.500 with an 8" barrel with 300 grain hollow rounds? I am at a crossroads here.
Viking Mike Do you live by yourself in the country? If so, go for it. Even with hollow rounds, the over penetration can still be a problem. It is that powerful.

If stopping an intruder is your concern you can't do much better than a 45 LC loaded to moderate velocities. However, shot placement is king and a dead eye shot with a 38 spec. will take down the perp every time.
So it's heavy? Well fucking work out your body to be able to handle the gun Recoil? Odd you mention that See the RU-vid vids of middle aged women shooting the 500 with one hand [not much ] recoil Ammo too expensive? get a second job Over-penetration? That's not what your wife tells me when she spends the night
