Out in the woods shooting my new Smith & Wesson 686 Plus Deluxe 6" seven shot revolver in .357 Magnum with Federal and Magtech soft point 158 grain JSP and SJSP ammo.
Keep your thumb off the cylinder release when firing it. That was most likely what caused the malfunction. Under recoil, you can hit that release and cause it to jam up due to the cylinder trying to unlock. Pushing on the cylinder usually relocks it correctly and frees it up. Sometimes, it can take a rubber mallet to get it unstuck.
If you want to practice dry firing. Empty the revolver, place a dime on the barrel just behind the front sight and dry fire double action. Put a target up to have something to aim at and dry fire double action without dropping the dime. This exercise really works well on leer revolvers with a round barrel but is still pretty with newer guns.
It takes a minute to get used to shooting a revolver due to the long trigger pull, but it will be come second nature to you. They are a pleasure to shoot. I recommend starting with 38 special or light 357 magnums and using the rubber grips. Granted, the wood looks nicer but the rubber does mitigate recoil.
If you move your hands up a bit closer to the hammer the gun will not kick up as much when firing .357 rounds, this should also keep your thumbs from getting near the cylinder release.😉
4:58 you can see the trigger is held to the rear and did not reset. If you are new to revolvers or just working on guns in general I would have a competent gunsmith look into it. If you don’t have a local one you can trust, I would just contact S&W and send it back to them
That's a beautiful revolver with the wood... I have the same 686 plus with the rubber grip.... What's good with the 6" bbl. ya can put on a rail with a pistol scope.... At 100yds. gets boring hitting a gong.... be well.
I've bought two boxes of Magtech. one .38 and one .357. the .38 fired fine but the .357 failed at a rate of one in five. if you over extend the rear sight screw it will break.
Hope I didn't break it and can bring it back to the right. Bought the spanner bit and I'm going to give it a try this weekend. Thankfully I haven't had any issues with the Magtech ammo... yet.
357 mag is a snappy round , not ez to shoot .. Don’t play with the sights just practice.. I am more concerned about the gun locking up on you with your first cylinder of rounds .. Always be sure to let the trigger fully reset before your next shot .. Not sure but I think that’s what happened .. great video Brother !!
