CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Upon returning home, Thomas (Evan Adams) posits the need for one to forgive the past, as Victor (Adam Beach) spreads his father's ashes over the river.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This dramatic feature was written, directed, and co-produced by Native Americans. Native American writer Sherman Alexie scripted this adaptation of his 1993 short story collection The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Director Chris Eyre's previous short Someone Kept Saying Powwow is incorporated into the 88-minute feature. Developed at the Sundance Lab in 1995, the film was a winner of both the Audience Award and the Filmmakers' Trophy at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. In 1976, an infant survives a fire that kills his parents. In a flash forward to the present day, the infant has grown up to become the skinny, nerdy adult Thomas (Evan Adams). At Idaho's desolate Coeur d'Alene Indian reservation, the overeager youth is mostly ignored by others, including stoic athletic Victor Joseph (Adam Beach), even though it was Victor's father, alcoholic Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), who saved the infant Thomas' life in the fire. A drunken Arnold later abandoned his family, and Victor hasn't seen his father in a decade. When Victor learns of Arnold's death in Phoenix, Thomas offers to pay for the trip to Phoenix if he can accompany Victor. They make an odd couple since Victor is embarrassed by Thomas' geekiness. In Phoenix, they find that Arnold lived in a small trailer in the desert, and they meet Arnold's friend Suzy Song (Irene Bedard), who provides disturbing truths about Arnold that impact on Victor.

Smoke Signals is an all-time favorite movie of mine. The poem was read by one of my sons at his fathers funeral. The film is a comedy/drama deserving of highest honors!

It's sad how movies like these which are so rich in making us relating to the characters, so realistic, empathetic yet funny are not popular. Only those strerotypical movies that tells false facts are popular and famous. I hope people watch movies like these.

My family and I had the privilege of meeting Irene Bedard at a powwow. She was genuinely a kind soul. We watch this movie regularly since it really hits home for us. Generational trauma is real, but it's changing our perception of the past that has healed us all. This movie has many moments that offers insight!

Interviewed Evan Adams (Thomas) once about a short film he was in. He is so kind, down-to-earth and speaks highly of the people he works with. He should've gotten an Oscar nomination for this role

I forgave my father when I considered his life. He was in college when I was born. His father committed suicide when he was young, so he had no role model. For the years his dad was around, he was abusive. My father did well to stay around and keep us fed and clothed. He had untreated depression all his life. He did the best he could.

Excellent movie, by a great writer. The music choices were also noteworthy. Beach has gone onto more roles, and philanthropy . Adams is now an MD, Chief Medical Officer of the First Nations Health Authority in British Columbia. Great stuff; noteworthy lives.

I thought I understood this movie when I first watched it. Dead wrong. This is one of those that just keep getting deeper the more you watch them. "Deeper" as in, you understand them on this harder to reach, deeply human level, where the movie sort of passes its story on, into your mind, and it plays out there, on its own, changing you from within.

I lost my dad when he was 44. He died day before my 16th bday. Before that he ran away when I was about 12 or 13. I was amgry at him, i never got to forgive him or tell him I love him or any goodbyes. He drank alot and was a bad man when he was drunk but when he was sober, he was such a good man. I don't think I'll ever get over that regret of not saying anything to him or choosing not to say anything.

when i was waiting for my father to die so i could feel safe again, it gave me something to work towards, a point where the pain would end. when he died, the pain and the fear came roaring back all at once, despite my brain knowing i’d never see him (even by accident) ever again. when thomas asks what is left after we forgive our fathers, i say it’s you. what you’ve lived through, what you’ve felt. what you’ve learned, what you’ve survived through. the marks and memories are left obviously, but you are no longer consumed

thanks for sharing, Josh. I'd have to imagine your father yells at you for bringing this up because has a tremendous feeling of shame about how he treated you as you grew up. he may have tried to form an apology hundreds of times, but it never came out. your forgiveness meant the world to him, but it is more for the one doing the forgiving. that is how we move on.

Perfection is something invented by the human imagination. Nothing else keeps score. No spider ever spun a web, and decided it wasn’t good enough because some other spider had a better web. Parents can’t be perfect. Judging their degree of imperfection is a useless activity. Once adults, we need to move forward with whatever skills and tools we can.

Forgive your father for yourself, before its too late because trust me, if you don't, it'll poison you. My dad died day before my 16th bday. He left me and my mom when I was 12 or 13. I blamed him and ignored him. I believed he would be around long enough to hear my side of things. Of course he was an alcoholic and that did his liver in. But you still think he'll be around. Trust me when I say forgive him. Its not for them but for you, because if you don't get that chance like me, you'll be angry and thats not something that just goes away. Its been 10 years going on 11, and I'm still angry.

Forgiving our Parents, forgiving our grandparents, fortging our ancestors is an act of liberating our own soul! You must forgive them so that the past does not dominate your futur. You forgive them so you can heal! ...and you must never forget so that the same mistakes dont repeat themselfs! If yo dont manage to make peace with the past, you will continue to suffer. Sometimes you suffer from wounds that have been passee down for generations. Nobody behaves the way he behave for no reason! We are made into who we are. And only we outselves are able to recognize this, something abot it an break think line.

"How do we forgive our fathers? Maybe in a dream. Do we forgive our fathers for leaving us too often, or forever, when we were little? Maybe for scaring us with unexpected rage, or making us nervous because there never seemed to be any rage there at all? Do we forgive our fathers for marrying, or not marrying, our mothers? For divorcing, or not divorcing, our mothers? And shall we forgive them for their excesses of warmth or coldness? Shall we forgive them for pushing, or leaning? For shutting doors or speaking through walls? For never speaking, or never being silent? Do we forgive our fathers in our age, or in theirs? Or in their deaths, saying it to them or not saying it. If we forgive our fathers, what is left?"
