I'm 40 & grew up in Portland, OR. My dad loved to fish & loved boating. i never really took to fishing so much(i prefer the convenience of just buying fish at the market) but i absolutely love cooking/eating seafood. What i really enjoyed was just getting out on the water with my dad at so many different places. He took me to countless rivers/lakes throughout the pacific northwest, the San Juan Islands, & even Alaska. We fished for tuna off the Oregon coast. Crabbed bays & beaches. He even took me on a trip to Puerto Rico to fish for Dorado. i can't spend the type of money it takes to take up boating/fishing these days. But one thing we always had with us on my dad's boat was some combination of canned sardines, oysters, kipper snacks, pickled herring, some cheese, & saltines crackers(oh and beer & rum). Every once in awhile when I've got the place to myself & i don't have to cook for the wife, i still break out the canned fish, crackers, cheese, & beer. i may not own a boat, but it tastes like I'm right back on the water.

I like smoked oysters occasionally. I usually eat them with saltines as well. I agree that they're slightly bland. I usually add a bit of tabasco sauce or a dab of mustard to "spice them up" a little.
@CannedFishFiles
@CannedFishFiles 3 года назад
100% I usually have a "no extras" policy for the review, but Tabasco would have been the exact perfect fit. Hard to find a niche for Tabasco for me; so much hot sauce competition in the 21st century. Sriracha replaced Tabasco on my eggs long ago. Sad!

Best thing to do with smoked oysters is smoked oyster pasta. You need 1 can smoked oysters drained and mashed, I clove garlic minced, 1/2 jar good quality pasta tomato sauce. Fry the garlic and oysters in olive oil one min, then add the tomato sauce. Simmer while the pasta cooks, adding a spoon or two of pasta water if the sauce gets dry. Cook the pasta right in the sauce for the last two minutes, reserving the pasta water so you can keep it loose. Serve with or without parmigiano cheese

I've got no big relationships or memories to shellfish or seafood. In high school around 10th grade a friend and me were at a convenience store buying our daily mountain dew, he picked up a can of sardines packed in hot sauce. We both took a bite, he loved it, I coughed. Part of the spine was scratching my throat I do like them, I just have to put a little work in, cleaning out the bones, dont like the texture. Work in a shellfish restaurant for a year so far, I've had one raw oyster with nothing on it, didn't know to use lemon and stuff. Had a couple steamed oysters, they're much better than the one raw I had. I ain't paying no $9 for 6 shriveled bites though, and that's from after my discount

Funny enough you were right on with the guess on the green stuff. The only brand I’ve found in the us that purges the oysters is great value. They all do their canning in China so I’ve never figured out why one generic store brand purges their oysters when the others don’t. I’m with you, give me a nice can of sardines or kipper snacks any day. Oysters taste too much like the can they came from. I also have the same fond memories of canned fish on crackers with my dad. My mom used to make us eat them outside, and now my wife complains when my daughter and I eat them on movie night. The cycle continues.

Wow I liked smoked oysters. I am surprised they didn’t impress but then I only tried expensive ones.

Thanks. Soon, I'm gonna try a can of Patagonia mackerel I have in the cupboard. If I have a great experience (think I will), I'll probably go on a Patagonia shopping spree.
