I like the stump removal method from an old book on farming. 1. Build a hog pen around the stump, move your hogs in. 2. Every day, take a crowbar and poke holes in the dirt around the edges of the stump. Pour some dried corn in each hole. The hogs will spend all day digging out the corn. Eventually, they’ll dig the stump up for you.

In the 70s I helped on a ranch that used dynamite, heavy equipment to help remove giant stumps. Big old world tee stumps have lots of usable wood. One huge stump would not come out so fertilizer was mixed up and Dynamite, det cord used. They had the permits etc and that stump big as a car came out. Big money in those old trees.

I have used a metal ring cut out of a 55 gallon drum to burn stumps...The WolfRidge smokeless fire pit is a much more elegant way to do it! Hint 1: next time, try drilling holes with a wood boring bit. Then soak the holes with your favorite flammable liquid, the dry stump will absorb the liquid, then it will Burn Baby Burn. The thinner the flammable liquid, the more it will absorb, so, kerosene will soak in better than diesel. Diesel can be smokey, anyway. A bottle of charcoal lighter fluid, soaked into the stump, burns pretty cleanly. The cuts in the stump area great idea, also.

I like the fire ring idea. However, the chainsaw you used to cut the slots into the stump you could have used to cut the stump closer to the ground. Therefore the burn time would be reduced to a few hours.

The trick is to keep putting tinder on the fire well after it has burned down to ground level. This causes the burn to teach the roots, and eat the roots. The drawback is that then there is a fire underground, and could potentially reach any underground infrastructure, depending on how extensive are the roots.

Here in the southwest, we have mesquite wood, which is about twice as hard as oak. What I do to remove the mesquite stump is to cut down to ground level, then use steel wedges and a sledge to separate down the middle. I also dig around the base to expose the other root arms, and after it splits down the center, it comes out relatively easily.

The most successful stump burns I've had with ones in that size range, was to dig in 4 or 5 spots around the circumference, trying to get angled vent tunnels as far underneath it as possible, supplement with chainsaw cuts down to the tunnels, then start small fires in each one. The idea being fire, like heat, rises. It's a lot easier to burn from the bottom up than the top down. Top-down fire lays are what you use in camping to consume the wood slowly for an all-night fire. Fire underneath the fuel, with plenty of air flow, will burn one out like a blast furnace.

I burned out a 24" oak stump by drilling 12" deep vertical holes around the top of the stump . Then drilled horizontal holes to intersect the vertical holes. Poured a little gas into each hole and let it rip. About 4 hours later the stump was gone . Drilling holes in this way makes the stump act like a rocket fired heater where the wood burns at a higher temp.

Drill holes in the top of it and fill it with kerosene. Keep topping it off for a few days. Then, in about 2 weeks, throw a match on it. It'll burn out the stump as well as the long roots, and you don't need to buy a huge steel ring that you don't know what to do with afterward.
@Back40Firewood
@Back40Firewood Месяц назад
Well the 'ring' is a fire pit/ring so afterwards it will be used for that...lol...it can be used over and over again for having fires in the backyard. Also adding kerosene does not remove the moisture that is trapped in the wood. That is what keeps Oak stumps from burning and the reason you need to add other wood to burn and dry down the actual stump so that it will burn. The stump was probably close to 40% moisture in the wood and water won't burn, even with kerosene.
@tomm2147

I've burnt out a few stumps by digging around the stump around 6 in. deep add either wood or charcoal on one side and set up a blower to blow into the fire and somewhat around the stump. Then just keep the fire burning. The stump will be gone in a few hours or so and then all you need to do is fill in the hole with dirt and plant some grass seed. Or hire someone with a stump grinder. I've done that to.
@metelgodful
@metelgodful 2 месяца назад
A lot of the time you can remove old stumps if they're really old and dry with a wood splitting Mall and wedges and split it like you're splitting wood or get a carbine chain to put on your chainsaw if you have one and cut it out you cut that with a hand saw you don't have a chainsaw if you had a chainsaw you could cut the stump lower to the ground so it would be a lot less burning

Do they come in titanium? I made basically the same thing, just a slightly different look, about q0 years ago out of a 35 gallon ink drum from where I was working at the time. It worked a treat but didn't take long to burn out, even with hitting it with a wire brush after each burning and putting it inside the garage out of the weather. About 6 months is all it lasted. I always thought it would be nice to have one in titanium so it would last

Dig around the stump a little bit. Drill a hole with a auger bit 1" or bigger if you have one. Drillthe ti the middle. Then down in the middle of the stump. Start a fire in the hole the air will feed it from the button. And you'll have a good night campfire and your stump will be gone.
@raybrensike42
@raybrensike42 2 месяца назад
The thing about fire is, it really doesn't seem like it wants to burn downward. I would try digging under it enough to get some hot fire burning toward the center of the stump. If you can get it burning good and supply enough air to keep it going, I think it would burn better than way than what many have tried by trying to put fire on top of it, hoping it will burn its way downward.
