On this episode I continue with the ongoing restoration of this 1979 Kenworth W900A truck to turn it into a tribute movie truck to the one used in the 1977 classic movie Smokey and the Bandit with Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed and Jackie Gleason. If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for??? “Big and Little Enos Burdette make that same bet with every gear-jammer they can”
This time out, I’m focused on upgrading the existing hubs on Snowman as the current hubs have the shorter-style studs for the original steel wheels. For this current setup I cheated and used an inner steel and then bought longer outer studs to accommodate the thicker 24.5 aluminum wheels on the outside. However, with my desire to get this truck movie/period correct, I now plan to use two 22” 10-hole aluminum wheels (inner and outer) so I now need to upgrade my hubs. Now I could just add longer studs, however, I plan to take all these components over to the #IronDuke (my K100 cabover project) so I needed new hubs and drums to move forward. After reaching out to ConMet, the leading supplier of wheel ends, aluminum castings and plastic components for the commercial vehicle industry, they hooked me up with their latest PreSet hubs with spindle nut and TruTurn Drum technology that come as a complete package that fits hundreds of applications. Some impressive upgrades for this old Kenworth that were refreshingly easy to install.
Download the ConMet app at www.conmet.com/app to find the parts needed quick saving time and money
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and support!
Keep in mind, I know a little about a lot but not an expert in anything … just doing the best I can, learning as I go ... I do all my own stunts
Enjoy watching the progress of this Kenworth W900A project, the ongoing Peterbilt 359 restoration and the upcoming #IronDuke Kenworth K100 cabover I’m planning to build up like the one used in the 70’s trucking movie High Ballin’ with Jerry Reed and Peter Fonda. Note that the #IronDuke build is only available on my Patreon channel

Hi Mark, I've noticed for the last couple videos the frame rate has been quite choppy and it gets hard to view at time. Any reason for this? I just assume its technical issues.

Hello Mark it’s Vince from Fort Garry. Thx for the shoutout !! This was an awesome episode, seeing you install the comet hub I sold you, talking your way through it . What a wicked learning and teaching episode. I’ve saved it for myself…. Thx again Mark , well done !
@minerma

Hey Mark, when removing axles from the hub, hit the centre of the axle, this will shock the cone washers loose, then just use a screwdriver in the split on the cone and twist them off. If you hit the back side of the axle flange you can just wedge the cone tighter into the taper of the axle.
@pumpgasproductions6244
@pumpgasproductions6244 2 года назад
I was thinking the same, Ive only done it a few times. one quick smack with the sledge on the center of the axle and it pops right out.....whether that is right or wrong is beyond me lol

I also have a small tip when working on a beautiful clean shop floor is lay down a sheet of cardboard and it catches a bunch of oil and makes cleaning up the shop super quick. Thank you for doing what you do. Keep up the good and clean work.

Just 1 quick tip for caging your brakes. I have an air line fitting in my truck's primary air tank. Charge the air system on the truck with a compressor, release the brakes and put in all the caging bolts at the same time. I learned this trick from the volunteer fire department in Bowden AB years ago. They kept the air system on their trucks charged all the time so they could fire up and go.
@TwinStix

The fire dept here keeps an airline on the truck all the time and it has a breakaway fitting that auto releases when they move the truck.
@brianburns7211
@brianburns7211 2 года назад
I’ve seen the fire department have the truck on air and power too. The power can run a battery tender and possibly also have a block heater so the engine gets up to operating temperature faster. I work for a trucking company and we have enough indoor space to keep the tractors. We charge the trucks so the shop doesn’t smoke out the mechanics every time a truck is fired up to go out.

Hi Mark i love your attention to details not many people would worry about trying to find the exact correct size wheel but honestly it makes a difference. One thing that stands out for me especially with this filming angle is that the battery box covers on the original didn't have a second step notched into it. It's essentially a smooth step i have been building a 1:25 scale snowmans rig i could only dream of building the real thing i love your channel and this build is my favourite thing to watch on RU-vid it takes me back to when i was a kid. Love your work mate

Awesome. I usually bang the axle flange in the middle of the outside and it pops all the cones together. If I have a plug in the hub I empty it through the plug, less messy. Those hubs are slicker than snot. Wish I knew before I just spent $800 for new drums for my motorhome.

@brianburns7211
@brianburns7211 2 года назад
I was thinking that Mark could have caged them all at once if instead of putting the air to the can, he could have a fitting on the main reservoir and aired up the whole truck at once. This is good for the future too. This way he can pre fill the truck so it doesn’t have to idle in the shop to build air. That way the building doesn’t fill up with smoke.

20 years ago I worked for Iveco Ford Truck in the UK. We had a Euro Star with a leaking hub seal. It was a one piece bearing and seal the unit cost £600.00 each. The torque setting for that was 1200Nm we ended up using a torque converter and a 2foot torque wrench set to 200Nm. As for the half shafts. We used to have recovery drivers pull the wrong side out. So the diff lock would drop and we would have to engage it then put a broom handle in the axle to lift the ring up. Then we could put the half shaft in. With the lock ring. We had a mechanic and his appearance do a job on a small 7.5ton truck. A day later it came back with binding brakes. The mechanic I was working with was given the job. When we stripped the end of the the axle we found out that the lock ring wasn't seated properly. So it hadn't locked, if it hadn't been for the fact the truck had disc brakes the whole hub would have come off. Also for the sake of your back, when you use a torque wrench work with gravity 😁 Loving the progress Mark greetings now from NZ

Its been 40 years since I tackled changing semi tires, reverse threads, repairing flats and working with split rings. I personally never worked with split rim, but one of my Dad did. Believe it or not, we did not have a tire cage at the time, so we used the leg of a car lift set down on top of the wheel. This one time the rim did not seal during inflation and boom that car lift leg was blown off and the rim hit the top of the ceiling! God was with everyone around that day ! My dad fabricated and constructed a tire cage that day which everyone was appreciative for -- ps never told my mom 🙂

You can put wire between the cap studs or some bar or tool in the axle to catch the bearing so it wont fall to the ground and put shop air directly to tanks and you can cage all the brakes at the same time. Dont go cheap on the hub seals you should replace them when you put the hubs to duke they can be damaged and start to leak. I have had a few cases where i've just put new hub seals and taken the hub off and put back and few days later they have started to leak.
