Smooth dimming with Node RED

In this video I'm taking advantage of the built-in dimming commands in the IKEA bulbs, to achieve a seamless and smooth dimming with minimal traffic on the Zigbee network.
----------------------------------------------------
In most of my house I have IKEA Zigbee bulbs and on/off switches. I use binding to enable the switches to talk directly to the bulbs.
This gives me several advantages:
1) The light switches work even if my HA is down.
2) The dimming is very smooth
I'm currently introducing switches that are NOT Zigbee, so I'm not able to use binding for those. Therefore I had to make the dimming in Node-Red and typically that is done with a delay and sending a lot of Zigbee messages to the bulbs. And to get a somewhat smooth dimming, you need to fiddle with the timing, the step size and it is very vulnerable to the performance on your hardware. Further more it will spam your Zigbee network unnecessarily.
So I choose to explore how IKEA does the direct dimming so smooth and it turns out that there is actually dimming built-in to the bulbs and you can activate it with a Zigbee command.
The dimming commands is documented here: www.zigbee2mqt...
In this video I'm using the MQTT node in Node-Red to send Zigbee commands to the bulbs, to utilize the built-in dimming function and leave the dimming up to the bulbs.
That will give me a seamless and smooth dimming with minimal traffic on the Zigbee network and the ability to control the dimming speed without any chunking issues.
The subflow can be found here: gist.github.co...

Hello neighbour, you just saved the day. Just moved over to Zigbee2MQTT and got stuck on the dimming issue. Deconz had a build in domain that handled it in a similar manor like this. Thank you very much for sorting this out.

Hey sorry to resurrect this really old video. This looks incredible. Do you know if it is possible to do this using ZHA instead of MQTT? You mentioned that you could do this using a regular "call service" node but I cannot get it to accept "brightness_move" there in the light.turn_on or through any of the zha commands either.

perfect :) thank u Is there a way to stop at brightnes minimum 2? Because my CW/WW Stripe turns off, if the color_temp is not at minium (150) or maximum (500) and lower then brightness 2 So if i change the Color_Temperature to e.q = 486 and start brightness_move -40, as soon i go lower then 2 my led goes off

Hi, any example for payload commands (increase, decrease, stop) for wifi bulbs?

This is very cool. Do you know if this option is only available on the Ikea bulbs, or will it work for stuff like Nordtronic, Osram and so as well?

You can check the "Supported devices" section on zigbee2mqtt.io. HUE bulbs also support the brightness_move command.

unfortunately only Ikea bulbs seam to have the internal dimming start/stop function implemented. this is useless for most of the bulbs or dimmers out there where you can only set the desired brightness value so you need to loop and mime the linear transition.

My Sengled bulbs support these functions just fine.
