Herbert, thanks for the comment. I guess you could think about it in different ways. But in truth it’s a bit ambiguous, and not really diatonic at all. Believe me when I say I have already thought hard about this when creating/naming the track! I still hear this ultimately as resolving to the Bm, rather than Em chord. The Bm feels like ‘home’ in this track, to me. Maybe you feel different? I think maybe I am viewing the Am and D7 in the a section as merely as passing chords just to reach the Gmaj7 chord. The F#7 also has very strong pull back toward the Bm. Furthermore, the B section is based around a ii-V-I in D, which is would be relative major to Bm. But here we use the B7 chord to pull us back to the Em. I see where you are getting B Phrygian from, too, but I don’t think the track is diatonic enough to boil it down to a single mode. What do you think?

​@@HiQbackingtracks This analysis absolutely makes sense to me, thanks for your reply; I guess I hear the first section differently. In the first progression, Bm definitely sounds like the home chord, the relatively long dwelling on Am makes this section sound B phrygian to my ear, especially since the following D7 and Gmaj7 would be diatonic then, while for B aeolian only Bm and Gmaj7 would be diatonic. The second section though has Em and Dmaj7 as the most stable sounding chords, suggesting a change to D major/E dorian to my ears. So as a whole, I now understand why you chose B minor for the title, "Smooth Neo Soul Backing Track in B phyrgian and E dorian" sounds a little menacing when "B minor" is just as correct.

Am7 for me is just the IIm7 of the bVImaj7 chord, which is Gmaj7. It's just a II-V-I progression to the bVI chord. Every chord of the tonality may have your own subdominant and a dominant chord, including the modal exchange chords.

@@herbertherbert1939 And let me assure you those of us who are just starting to become a bit more comfortable understanding what you're both talking about, the less menacing the better. For me, psychologically, it's a lot better for me to just read the words "B minor" and then hunt for what sounds goods to play. Once I'm comfortable playing it, there's no doubt I'm likely to encounter the other chords as well without realizing it; however, I couldn't tell you what they are while I'm playing them. That said, once I get to the point where as soon as I start the back track (bass less in my case) and I'm comfortable playing it in ways that allow me to discover even more fills, then I'm likely to pause and break things into pieces. I guess I need the dopamine hit from the joy of playing first, but this also allows for personal association with a fill I come up with, making the chord and/or mode easier to remember.
