What you said at 10:40, about letting go of the mind and thinking… my art teacher from long ago always told me: “Draw what you see, not what you THINK you see.” She told me that at age 5, and I still remember that to this day. Art is like music: you just have to let go and let your artistic energy flow out of you!

This actually is the corner stone of my work, without connecting to just being in the heart I could not draw a thing. I find the work just happens to draw itself the more I keep the mind out of the way. Thank you so much for watching... all the very best. 🙏

This is the first video I've watched of yours Dave, what a lovely way of explaining everything to the viewers. Clear, concise, and spoken softly that resonates with the viewer. I found this highly informative, and I certainly learned a thing or two here. I'll be watching a lot more of your content in the next few days. I really liked how you also suggested letting your heart take over and less thinking, this is something many artists struggle with and they feel like they are battling the drawing, instead of letting their creative side flow freely. Thank you.

Depends on the texture of the skin. If the pic has more texture then vellum paper is needed. Some pics have few texture. In that case smooth paper should be used. One should realize the pattern of texture of face & choose paper in that way.
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 3 года назад
Yes that is a consideration to bare in mind... it is weighing up whether you also require a dramatic high contrast image too. It's a case of choosing based on the feeling you wish to portray. Thanks for the comment 👍🙏

I don't really think it matters. It's all preference. I myself have been a hyoerrealism artist for 18 years. I only use bristol smooth. I create all the texture the reference photo has with my pencil and erasers. I would say use the Velum if you are new to graphite drawing and once you progress switch to the bristol smooth. The only paper i would use that's not Bristol smooth as a hyperrealistic artist would be Hahnemuhle nostalge paper

I’m not working on a person, BUT along with finding out about the different papers (both look amazing, just different) I heard the magic words that totally unlocked why I was stumped on a rather large shell 🐚 I’m drawing… even if the photo has a lot of white, I need to pick a spot for my brightness highlight (center) and use degrees of shading everywhere else. Oh my gosh….my shell is practically jumping off the page now… (water soluble graphite on hp paper) very similar to smooth…

Thanks for this it was the best explanation of the different papers and their advantages and disadvantages I've found. As a complete newbie to drawing the astounding range of papers available at the local art shop bewildered me they all said they good for pencil so how would I know which one would be best for me? I left empty handed. This really cleared things up for me and helped me decide. My style is semi-realistic more towards the cartoonist side so skin texture or dynamics isn't really much of an issue for me. I also own a lot of expensive bush pens for calligraphy which really do require smooth paper so my choice is easy. Thanks this was exactly what I needed.

Interesting video Dave ..I have been searching good quality paper for doing architectural/landscape type drawings using graphite pencil. Very informative! I would really appreciate a video on using Stonehenge Legion 250gsm paper with charcoal. I’m used to Strathmore charcoal paper and I am currently trying the legion but trying to get the blending technique down is difficult. I’m used to blending with brushes and some tortillions which work effortlessly on the charcoal paper, but not the legion. Can you offer any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm working in colored pencil and trying to figure out the best paper and love this video but it applies more to graphite ...so I'm going to have to experiment more. So you never use a blending stub? Or any blending tool? Reason I ask is I've done a couple automotive drawings and used blending tools. Have used smooth on a smaller car drawing but used vellum on a big truck drawing because it was the only paper I had that big. But next I have another truck to do and then a couple portrait. Really injoyed the video but just wondered about the blending. Thanks.

Hi Chris, thanks for the message. I like to create my own texture by cross hatching etc. rather than blending I feel it keeps everything nice and fresh and alive in a loose sort of way. Thrilled you enjoyed my video... all the very best with your future portraits. 🙏🙏

I tried the Bristol Smooth. Didn’t like it for graphite. Couldn’t blend well with a brush or tissue. Great for hard lines. Terrible for blending. Although a practiced some colored pencil and liked it better than graphite.
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt Год назад
Thanks for sharing! Bristol smooth is great for coloured pencils, I have seen some great work from artist's using it. The smooth for graphite is great if you cross hatch, blend pencil over pencil as I tend to do on this surface, the Vellum is more suited for blending as it has a tooth to it. All the best 🙏

Is bristol smooth is more smoother than normal notebook paper? Or its just have light grain for pencils. I want a paper for writing with mechanical pencil but common notebook papers are very smooth and sketch papers are very toothy. I just want a small fine grain so that its good with writing with fine pointy pencils.
