I had never seen Red perform this bit before. I had heard of it but never seen it. Around 2007, I saw Tom Mullica in person and this was one of his encores. I was laughing so hard, I was crying. Love this bit.
@@ashleyr6809 I always assumed it was Algie, like the name that Pink Floyd gave to their inflatable flying pig from the Animals concert tours in the late 70s. 🐷?
Me too. I wish I could find it. I laughed so hard I fell out of my chair. He did it on his show once and it's an absolute scream! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o4mgHNX9eUg.html
My parents recorded the Ziegfeld Follies on VHS when I was little. This was easily my favorite skit. It was only much later that I realized that my dad was only seven years old when it was released. It just goes to show how timeless and transcendent some kinds of humor are. This was a nice SMOOOOOTH skit. Thanks for all the laughs, Red, and rest in peace. 😎👍
This totally cracked me up! I watched the movie Ziegfeld Follies and loved this hilarious skit from Red. As kids we always watched his show & my dad loved him too. This bit took me back to how funny and entertaining he was - everyone loved him. So many good laughs thanks to him. This bit is a gem! Classic!
I first saw this routine at some St. Louis movie theater, possibly the huge downtown Fox Theater or maybe the small, neighborhood Roxy Theater. It was before the days of television and the audience provided the laughs that are sadly missing from the youtube version..
Yep, for all the bad-mouthing "laugh tracks" on TV comedy shows have gotten, the whole reason for them was to recreate the actual studio audience reactions which early TV shows were filmed before. And filming before a "live television audience" was itself an extension of radio shows broadcast before live audiences. Which were an extension of vaudeville theaters.

I'd love to find a clip of the night when one of his props people pulled a prank on Red, and put gin in the bottle instead of water. First drink he took, he said, with a grin on his face, "OOOH! Somebody pull the real stuff in here!" :)
