Is he even human,it's not like he studied how a lot of players do now. This was pure calculation and chess instinct. He really had a feel for the game. I like this style of chess much better. Simply Amazing
+Jordan Clark ..that was bananas!!!!! There is a book titled Paul Morphy's best 300 games. You can replay all those games on a board. It is under the old coordinates, but you can learn the coordinates pretty quick. He was just awesome!!!
My sincere request to you would be to just go thru three of his games (of course my opinion alone) one against baucher where he lost/or allowed it to be taken (take your pick) one blindfold simul against Freeman and one against Anderssen (reverse baucher game) where he took his queen. If you do watch them please do tell me what you think about these three games.thks
Just when you think that chess is so calculated to the Nth move and utterly stagnant you come back to this and find true genius. The world is a much brighter place with Paul Morphys in it.
And Paul Morphy finishes the game by delivering checkmate with a single minor piece. Absolutely amazing. All of his games were pure art. He was completely ahead of his time. Thanks for your commentary.
Thank you for being concise and keeping it down to 5 mins. Too many 20-45 min vids of someone droning on about how poorly they felt the opponent played or end up demonstrating 3-5 variations that were potentially "better" moves to make.
There are Chess grand masters, and then there is Paul Morphy! Big difference. Nothing, or no one compares to this man's brilliant execution of moves. WOW!
If you like Morphy (and who doesn't), you should check out gems by Zukertort. Zukertort was brilliant. If you get (or already have) " The 1000 Best Short Games of Chess," by Irving Chernev, you'll get 6 games by Zukertort, 23 by Morphy, etc. and all games under 20 moves. A must have book for people who enjoy the poetry of chess. It is sheer brilliance!
Truly a magnificient game... and furthermore one of the most beautiful by far for me. Morphy's contrivances and ingenuity makes me speechless. Thank you so much Mato for sharing them, such as Mikhaïl Tal's which I would have probably not known without you.
I'm new to Mato's channel. I can tell you already that I am loving how clear, fast and concise his videos are! Thank you for doing lessons on Paul Morphy. His playing style is incredibly attacking, efficient and elegant. All the best Mato!
I have really been enjoying your series on Paul Morphy! I would always love to see some more Morphy games, I especially like the positions you pause at recommending people to find the move or moves, I always know it's worth taking the time to actually try to solve it. It was so satisfying when I found the move and realise why the video is named Smother of Invention! Very nice touch sir!
I love seeing Morphy's games. His ability to calculate was amazing. Wouldn't a great tournament be Morphy, Tal, Keres, Alekhine, Nezhmetinov, Fischer, Kasparov...?
Stunning Checkmate, like so many of Morphy's games! Mato is my fav, by far. Others meander when they digress into analyzing alternatives. Mato keeps it efficient and moving forward. Additionally, I love that his accent reminds me of Count Chocula! LOL!!!
WOW!!! Thinking SEVEN MOVES AHEAD!!! What a great check mate!!! Nice video and commentary as usual Mato! P.S. I really like to use exclamation points!!!
I know about smotherd mates but they are so rare that I have trouble spotting them! Great game, Morphy was and will always be the Bobby Jones of Chess to me! Thanks Mato!!
They seem to use this smother mate example a lot for certain tactics trainers especially the one used on chess.com. Anyway thank you for all the great videos and the clear analysis along with your fresh insights. Have a good one Mato:)
Knight to f7 is one of the best moves I ever have seen. No only sacrifice the knight for none material compension, he also calculated 7 moves ahead that involved a Queen sac! WOW!!
Average minds try to keep up with the number of minor pieces with their opponent; Genius mind doesn't give a f*ck about how many minor pieces or even queen you have, he checkmates you with one piece anyway. Amazing, simply brilliant!
Say what you will about Fischer and Kasparov. Morphy's games were more beautiful and fun. He's my favorite chess player of all time. No computers, no books, no bullshit. Just him and his brains to work with. No Morphy game ever bores me.
I just found Morphy in an article about old chess champs... I instantly clicked RU-vid, confident about a vid. from Mato. And, here I am! (Mato = Guarantee)
This variant of a smothered mate is actually well known, would be interesting to know if this was the first time in history this mate was played. Is "smother of invention" a little hint? are there any background information to this game?
