I rebuilt the smpte universal leader, frame by frame, for HD format (1080p30). This demo includes a "classic" smpte leader as a frame by frame comparison. All of the circles are real circles for aspect reference -- not stretched frames, as in other adaptations for HD (for instance - the "Adobe Universal Leader").
Animation realized in Apple Motion using behaviors and the countdown uses the Numbers generator. The circular number background created with photoshop as a radial gradient.
Dowloads:
for Mac (Final Cut/Motion -- ProRes 4444 format) [~46MB]:
with bad film jitter effect:
sight-creation...
without bad film jitter:
sight-creation...
for Windows (Mac, 'nix, etc. MP4/h.264 format, better than 4Mbps bitrate) [~4.5MB]:
with bad film jitter:
sight-creation...
without bad film jitter:
sight-creation...
Enjoy!
Honoring a request to remake my SMPTE Universal Leader 1080/30p clip into 23.98... well, the ProRes 4x4 version is 23.98 while the mp4 (h.264) version is 24p.

mp4 (for Windows, 'nix or Mac) [1080/24p]

Alasdair Mitchell: Actually on the sound side of things we still need those clocks and that 2-pop, for sync testing. The countdown gives us a sense of rhythm - we can hear if the 2-pop is out by even a fraction of a frame so long as we can watch the seconds leading up to the 2. Checking sync on a film without leader can be a nightmare, especially if the film fades in at the start.

Everybody assumes that the countdown is seconds… it's not-it's feet of film. Alll projectors back then were analog (and no way to make sure they all ran at the same speed) the only way to synchronize footage was by how many feet passed through the gate. I've taken the very best telecined originals I could find and timed them frame for frame. There are no missing or additional frames, this is a complete leader. All my research says: to "fix it" for time would be wrong.

Feet was the measurement for the old “Academy leader”. The “Universal leader” counts seconds.

I can't believe I didn't know that... maybe I miss that at film school. I always thought the 2 pop was 2 seconds before picture. Well it's not as helpful in a purely digital workflow then anymore, not sure if they sue the same technique now for digital deliverables to theatres. For the commercials I've made we use a different style clock, wich is all in seconds for obvious reasons.

I will have a "second accurate" version available soon. I'd have it already except that I'm having a catastrophic HD failure (which contains ALL of my Motion development files...) If I'm lucky, I'll recover the files... not holding my breath. But while everyone is waiting, would you prefer it as an FCPX generator? Or a video file as the rest of these? Or both?
@alasdair1990
@alasdair1990 11 лет назад
I'm confused. When I drop the correct file into FCP7, a 23.98 pro res file, in to a 23.98 pro res sequence, it needs no rendering... but the countdown only last 19 frames per second? I think you've made this wrong... wach quadrant should be split into 6 sections...

Thanks! I did use a pd version from archive(dot)org as a guide w/ some research. I was never able to find an "official" digital spec for a Universal leader (I contacted SMPTE-no reply). The only specifications I could find related to film/theater projectors. I figured it best to duplicate an original (telecined) as closely as possible, frame by frame. Analog motors and voltage variations projector to projector would make precision timing a fiction anyway. The "analog design" decision won out.

If you're going for the ProRes 4444, clicking on the link will attempt to open the video in your browser, and it's a very large file! (It will take a long time to load, and then not even play in a browser [unsupported format].) Right click on the links in the description and Save As... [None of the smpte leaders are zipped; only the H.264/MP4 versions will open and play.]

Probably not. The 29.97p version conforms perfectly to 23.98p in FCPX if you set up the project manually for 1080p 23.98p before adding the clip. I expect any decent NLE would do the same.

Can someone explain what this is for? I found it at "Inner Circle - A la la long" song videoclip

In the "olden days" of cinema, movies (and old TV shows) used to consist of reels of film... *many* reels of film. The movies were presented in theaters and employed projectionists to manage projecting the reels of film since, as one reel was ending another one had to be started for a seamless movie (or tv show as the case might have been). The film leaders were a kind of timing mechanism so that projectionists could sync the end of one reel to the beginning of another. The "countdown" is technically Feet of film, not seconds. The countdown went from 8 to 2 giving the projectionist ~6 seconds (technically: 6 feet) to get the two reels sync'd before flipping the switches on the projector's light source. The universal leader also has other sync points (like sound - either 16mm or 35mm sources) which you may notice are backwards (because the projectionist would be looking at it from "the other side" so to speak.) Nowadays, it's just nostalgia to a bunch of us old-timers... and *retro* to everybody else. In the digital age, there's really no real use for them. (PS - that goes for fractional frame rates like 29.97, 23.98 and 59.94 as well since there is no longer any point to using them - all broadcast stations *must be* digital or cease broadcasting. Another remnant of a bygone era.)

It appears that the links are down? I just tried to download the different versions but cannot? Thanks.
@sightcreations
@sightcreations 13 лет назад
no -- it's exactly 261 frames (8.7 seconds). Frame rate is 29.97fps. If you need exactly 10 seconds, you'll need to line it up on your video track with 1.3 seconds (39 frames) black overlay.

The SMPTE leader is supposed to be in seconds... It was an updated version of the Academy leader. src: wikipedia "Film Leader"

Ok... I'll try to reconstitute my original project for 23.98/24 ... I was trying that first, but I'm having font issues... when I can sort that out, I'll go ahead and rework it. I probably won't get to it until next week though (... taxes ... :P )

Really nice job on the animations. But it's too fast. Use a stopwatch of some sort and you'll see that your animation is clicking of seconds too quickly. If you used the old countdown as a leader, that one is wrong, too. Great work, though.

I thought that the SMPTE leader is numbered every foot (16 frames in 35mm) not seconds, with the gap between the final "2" and the first frame of programme being 47 frames of black, or very nearly two seconds.
@DialloKreed
@DialloKreed 11 лет назад
What does it stop at 2 secs? Is that standard or something? Why not the 1?
@lawrencedoliveiro9104
@lawrencedoliveiro9104 8 лет назад
I suppose the 2 seconds of black is to give time for the projectionist to switch on the lamp or something, so the audience sees the film starting from somewhere in the black, not from the leader.

Are you gonna make a 24fps version?
@FlyMusicMan
@FlyMusicMan 12 лет назад
Yeah, but it throws away frames and the motion is compromised. You might wind up losing some of the one frame bits. 23.98 is the universal format. : )
