Amazing, In 2011 this donegal team was nearly flawless, apart from one component: their attack. They were well able to keep the dublin forwards at bay. They amended this in 2012 and mastered the counter attack to supplement their defensive exploits, again seen in 2014...what good is keeping a team to 8 points when you can only score 0-06 yourselves?

"smug" just because he actually spoke some sense? I remember sitting in the Canal End watching that match and watching Donegal reduce the game to absolute dogshit. If people wanted to watch players being pulled and dragged down with teams breaking forward from defence with hand pass after hand pass then they'd be better off going to Belfast to watch an Ulster rugby match. Easy to see how Dublin, Kerry, Mayo and Tyrone (in fairness to them they don't play the blanket to the extent that Donegal do) are the 4 best teams in the country at the moment. Fair play to Mayo giving them their comeuppance this year, please God we won't hear from Donegal for a couple of years!

When we beat Kerry in 2012 he left Croke Park in disgust. When Cork beat Kerry recently no sign of him on the Sunday game which he was scheduled to go on. That to me is smug. Donegal is after beating Tyrone, we beat Mayo in the 2012 final, we should have beat Kerry in 2014 but Durcan made a silly mistake and we were the only team to have beat Dublin before they went 5 in a row. Not bad for a poor team.
Kerry and Dublin play the game the way it's supposed to be, quite the opposite of "puke" football. I'd much rather see Kerry winning an All Ireland than Donegal simply because they play it properly (from a Dub)
I am a Donegal supporter. I think the criticism here was fair. We were a man up and still didn't take the game to Dublin after this and consequently lost. Happily though we changed the following year and were worthy champions. The semi-final of 2014 against Dublin also showed what we can do with a positive game plan.
the fact that youre even talikin about soccer and gaelic in the same breath says it all. donegal changed their tactics this year thank fuck but last year were an embarrasment to gaelic football and rightly destroyed by the media
listen here. donegal were a disgrace last year. the whole country were delighted they got bet. different this year in fairness and deserved to win the all ireland. cant knock the man for saying what everyone was thinking
@Ceasan The only exception other than the games against Antrim, Cavan, Derry, Kildare, oh wait that's all of them.(I didn't follow their fortunes in the league bar the final whivh they did well in) I like Donegal as a county and their people, but what they played in the championship was utter dross. I can't understand how anyone could argue otherwise.

In 2011 Donegal played poorly but were worthy champions in 2012. They had the toughest draw possible and played an attacking game. The fact that Donegal scored 2 goals in the first few minutes of the 2012 speaks for itself.

@@mob3144 The second mayo and Monaghan broke the blanket defence in 2013 it was over for donegal. They had one more great performance against Dublin and that was it. Haven't made the semi's since.
So the All Ireland Championship 2011 as a whole was a resounding success with quality match after quality match apart from all those involving Donegal? People seriously need to get real! In fact, the Donegal & Kildare QF was the only game of any real entertainment in the entire campaign, final apart maybe. But hey, let's ignore that fact & concentrate on the bigger issue i.e. Donegal's reluctance to turn up on big days & accept their inevitable defeat. Finals are for the likes of Kerry, right?

No they haven't, Kerry have more all Ireland's then ulster combined football and hurling amazingly. Tyrone were too good for 5 years but there back to obscurity again with armagh. Donegal were an embarrassment against dublin in this game when dublin took the lead & they stuck to ultra defensive football..Fair play to donegal this year but im very confidant that they wont be in croke next year, they dont have the class for back to back all Irelands
nah thats not true at all. Spillane just likes the good football, long kick with great skill(way it should be played, im not from kerry and il tell you that, Spillane has 8 all-irelands why should he care? with a team that could play football. Population of Dublin, 1.2 million. Population of Donegal, maybe 200,000. Should Dublin be better, Yes. Lets be honest folks, Donegal put it up to Dublin regardless. People have to realise that gaelic football is a Boring sport regardless of who plays it. :D
Why they are a convincing team that do not just hoof the ball up field. And are willing work there way around the field. All this nonsense about purist football.
