Was a walking scorer volunteer at the Sanderson Farms tour stop and walked with Smylie. The crowd absolutely loved him. He was a joy to watch.

Funny you mention that. I was at SF maybe in 2016. He made bogey and punched a sign walking to next hole. Had a horrible attitude the holes i saw him.. But did like his humbleness in this interview

Much respect after listening to Smylie, best of luck in the future . Being humble is not easy.

What Smylie said at the end of the interview is something that’s not mentioned enough or hardly at all. All the guys on tour can play, but the consistent cut makers and high finishers are geniuses at making minute adjustments in their swing from shot to shot…they try to hit a 5 yard cut but miss it by 5 only to be able to dial it back in on the next shot.

Smylie - you've identified your issue. Once you started struggling you got too technical and haven't ever gotten out of your head. Not many people have been in the final pairing at the Masters and you'll always have that. I mean that sincerely. Forget the haters, play the course and not the swing. Best of luck.

This is the best advice. Every single pro golfers swing is different. Develop your skills, learn the different shots, and then go play. Not every shot will be good, and that is ok, that is, unfortunately, golf. It is a perfect game that is impossible to perfect. It's the pursuit of those amazing shots that keep the hacks and talents coming back.

Same thing happened to Bobby Clampett. He was THE golfer in college back in the late 80’s - early 80’s. He went pro in 1980 and recorded a victory and nine top-3 finishes in his first two seasons as a pro. He held a 5 stroke lead after the first two rounds of the 1982 Open (after finishing T3 at the ‘82 US Open. He fell apart on the weekend and finished 10th. He was never the same player after that. He was a very bright guy and changed his swing after the ‘82 season. He recorded only two top-3 finishes for the remainder of his career and never won again. Like Smylie he went into broadcasting and had a very good career as a CBS golf tower broadcaster until making a careless statement about an Asian golfer at the 2008 Masters. He referred to him as “the Chinaman” and was canned by CBS after a 17 year career. Political correctness is a real thing for sure.

Really good stuff, he’s one the most likable guys I’ve ever seen out on tour, been watching since 1970. Good Luck, Smylie!

What a kick ass guy, I was admittedly one of the guys that wondered why he stopped playing and now I understand more about the situation, golf is not only hard physically skill wise but probably even harder mentally, I'm glad you're still involved with the game

Played in (and won by the way!) a Pro-Am with Smiley some years ago when he was two years removed from being in the final group at the Masters. One of the most humble and finest gentlemen athletes I’ve been around. Don’t understand the hate.

I think the name Smylie actually hurts him. The sounds of privilege and someone with a silver spoon. I mean, if his name is Daniel Kaufman he is tough to bully when things go bad.

My buddy shot 62 in a Korn Ferry Monday Qualifier. He shot 74-75 on Thurs and Friday and missed the cut by 5. You don't have to be good at golf to play on tour. You must be great, lucky, on fire all at the same time...every day.

@Handletaken4 I have seen what you talk about first hand also, people have no idea how tough it is getting on tour and it does not get much easier when on tour.

I'm sorry, but I think thats a rather HIGH cut line....Hovering around par. He just choked on Thurs/ Fri when it mattered. He obviously has the game to get there. Sounds like a mental thing.

I’ve done that too, 64’s/65’s, then just wasn’t as comfortable on tournament day. They call it pressure. Golf is HARD at the Tour level, people have no understanding .

Dude most of these comments are brutal. Wth. I like him as a commentator and love his honesty here. You never know how painful it could be to in someone’s shoes. It’s unfair to roast him.

Golfer's Journal. Did'nt that happen to David Duval #2 to #1,000??
@danmyers9372
@danmyers9372 2 месяца назад
Not really. David was 1000% dedicated to golf and being #1. What changed for David is he met woman (who became his wife) and he found out there was a lot more to life and being a human being than playing golf. The player with a very similar story to Smylie was Bobby Clampett back in the 80’s.

Last place should make enough to pay for the flight, hotel , caddie 2k?, and walk with 5k, so 10k minimum.

Let’s be honest, he’s not a natural at commentating, like at all. He stutters, says nothing off the cuff thats of substance or entertaining, and struggles when I’m conversation. The only reason, and I mean only reason, he got the job is because he’s part of the boys club. Jordan rickie Justin. Sorry but it’s the fact

Not everyone can be a David Feherty or Gary McCord. I don't really have an opinion on his broadcasting overall, but I am guessing you were one of the "bullies" that traumatized him during his struggles. If you don't like his comments, I'd like to remind you there is a mute button on your remote control. I often used it when Johnny Miller was on. I won't say more since its not my place. You might think about that yourself.
