That hemisphere optical turret is really interesting and seems like such an awesome system. Seems like optical guidance and threat detection even as just a backup is important and to have a big sphere on one turret seems efficient. I hope the US Navy puts them on each ship.

Hey don't laugh lol. The navy is looking at an Antarctic support/ southern ocean patrol ship. Also time the Mk 46 torpedo was replaced. The armies Mistal and the 105mm howitzers are getting long in the teeth. I believe they also want to replace the Pinzgauer trucks. The navy needs to start thinking about the Frigate replacement. The services have $NZ10 billion to spend this decade on toys.

It would be as capable (if not more capable) against ballistic missile threats than the SM-6 and there's a potential to quad pack the PAC-3 ERINT/CRI or dual pack the MSE for increased missile load.

The rim-162 ESSM (evolved sea sparrow) is only a short to medium range air defense missile which is not capable of ballistic missile defense. The mim-104 Patriot is an anti ballistic missile defense system.

Good question. But will say sm3 is more of an anti-ballistic missile. But I don’t understand the gaps not filled by sm2 and essm more specifically.

The PAC-3s have been tested against more capable ballistic missile test targets than the SM-6. Plus the altitude control motors of the PAC-3 would give it better post-burn pH and the HTK warhead would be better at destroying ballistic missiles.

@@Just_A_Random_Desk In no way is it better, not in range, payload, kill vehicle, or engagement envelope, or variety. it is a MUCH smaller and shorter ranged weapon, and cheap compared to SM-6. They are not in the same class by any metric whatsoever.

French frigates recently won an ASW award from the USN, and they deploy the CAPTAS sonar. Apparently, the USN was very impressed with it.

How come the animation showed a SeaRAM rather than full 22 rd RAM launcher? Are they cutting costs already?

SeaRam has its own radar and optical system. The larger launcher box must be integrated with the ship's radar. I don't know if the ship's radar can integrate with the system. I don't ever recall seeing the larger launcher box on a US DDG or CG.

It actually looks like something different than either the 11 cell SeaRAM or the 21 cell mk 49. The launcher in the render has 18 cells and something similar to the Phalanx's fire control suite. It could also be that we're reading into this too much and there are minor errors in the render when it comes to some of the top side equipment. The animation is all about showcasing the CAPTAS-4 VDS after all.

Do we really need frigates? Feels like having more destroyers, super carriers & subs would be better since we never seem to have enough of them and they are the most important ones to have.

A Destroyer, super carrier, or a sub is in no way proper for use of what a Frigate is for. There is also a practical number for the carriers that can be supported. The Frigates allow the rest of the Destroyer fleet to not be wasted on low end assignments. As for subs those have a very different mission and don't overlap with Frigate missions.

In a shooting war against China, US ships will be running out of missiles while Chinese ones are just getting started. The US relies on numbers of ships, Chinese on number of missiles per ship. The Chinese are liable to launch swarms of missiles against US ships from various directions and launch platforms.

I can't say enough about the awful awful spokesman for AAC, or thales, peddling the CAPTAS-4, just an incompetent sent by the organization. It doesn't say much for AAC, it seems almost like it's an MIC shell corp, nothing more, made solely to comply with US laws. This spokesman raises concerns in my mind that AAC may not be that competent of an organization. We will be watching their performance closely.
