I love how she's raspy and isn't a conventional singer and it just works with this song; completely portrays the whole story and sound of the song. It's such a damn vibe.
Which is a strange thing, most of her vocals live are a really sad thing to listen sometimes, I mean she is a really great singer but I feel like frequent touring made her voice tired and sounded bad in most performances, this one was really an exception, she sounds terrific here, if she just could keep her voice like this most of the time but i think it’ll be imposible 😕
saw them perform in Pittsburgh and, my god you have no idea, the drummer carries the band on his back, theyre all great but he was constantly holding them steady
but forreal he was standing and giving commands to everyone from guitarists to the sound check and ligths people. haha a true man of keeping the rythem around him in sync.
Oh garden slug What would you give to live like one of us? Or would you rather wait in the shade? Just the same as everyday Oh useless thing What does another useless day bring? Did you just lie in place? Emulated by the way I lie awake And in the waves I could've sworn that I saw my own reflection And it was someone else's in the back I could've waited my whole life to Know the difference But I should've just known better than that And oh is it easiest to hide? Under covered rocks Or would you rather cut it all down? Just to keep it from dragging you around And in the waves I could've sworn that I saw my own reflection And it was someone else's in the back I could've waited my whole life to Know the difference But I should've just known better than that So if you look death right in the face, don't thank him Because there's nothing and there won't ever be And in moss covered springs you'll never find anything So what's the use in hiding under our feet?
Coming back almost 5 year later, I hear still get goosebumps hearing her guitar. Shes so talented, just watch. I hear the second coming of legends with the emotion intertwined with the melody. Valentine was vvv good. Tbh I just want more face melting yet heart throbbing riffs as she exemplified so beautifully here, *live*. Lindsey makes a Jaguar purr
That’s not to say the studio versions are bad.. I mean, this is my first time listening to them live and I’ve been on Snail Mail for over a year with the Spotify studio versions. This is better by far, but I’m trying to say you can definitely love the band for their studio releases
i think the production of the album is way too punctual and pristine, the performance on these live versions have a level of intimacy that cannot be achieved by layered multitrack recording
Just found this song- brilliant. Vocalist is so good. Listened for the first time yesterday on the way to reconnect with my father (after 9 years). Always will associate it with that now
Damn I miss this era of snail mail live performances, I really like the valentine studio record but the live shows are tough to watch, I hope Lindsey can return to this one day
What a beautiful song, I stopped following indie a long time ago and this song takes me straight back to the Pixies or even before, the Smiths. Thank you the New Yorker with your best of 2021 music list for including Snail Mail; funnily it is this song from 2016 that I think is the most accomplished! I am glad that indie rock today is definitely alive. This singer has an incredible talent at such a young age, and a very personal style, somewhat like PJ Harvey or Björk. I wish her the very best and I hope she will come up with great songs and pursue her obsession.
Accidentally found this while trying to find an artist called freak slug lol glad I did because these are awesome just downloaded thier albums of iTunes

I learned how to sing by singing along to every Snail Mail, Nirvana, Weezer, Alex G, Clairo, Beatles, and Big Thief, and Taylor Swift record lmfao. Lindsey's notes are absolutely the most difficult to hit, and Alex G and Kurt being the easiest for me. Rivers from Weezer sings very very clear compared to everyone, as does Taylor, so it's like the opposite of cursive singing which is like kind of how I sound. Claire's range is also easy, as is Lennon's. Paul McCartney's voice and Lindsey both hit notes in ways that are almost impossible for most people lol. Taylor is easy too if u have the same range as her but her intonations are the key thing, as with Clairo and Weezer, and Nirvana, with how Kurt slurs his words and drops his voice low to rest. Claire does the same thing, as does Lindsey, just a couple octaves up. I cannot stress just how good Lindsey's voice is. So good that even she lost her own voice now, because it was not humanly possible lol. The notes she is hitting with the clarity she is letting them out in is just insane. I literally sing choir as a kid and I can hit almost every note I want, but the "aaaauuuuuuuhhhhhh garden slug, what would you giiiiive to liiiike like one of us" is really such a difficult set of notes to hit, and then she just lets out the "or would you RATHER WAIT in the shade," and like how? She didn't have time to catch air. It's all throat and head voice which is insane, bc somehow it sounds like chest voice with the clarity. But the way her voice breaks is clearly throat because she's squeezing the air out. Just crazy it sounded so clear here for a time. Another modern vocalist that perplexes me is Michelle Zauner. She is basically Madonna part 2. My mom and I are consistently blown away by her voice and Lindsey's voices.
I don't understand, all of trombones and TRUMPET from album are have disappeared???! How does a band want to play if there are instruments like large HORN playing or not playing when they were recorded to be played. Someone EXPLAIN???? Nervous for singer, does she miss the sound of horns blasting? Not sure.
