The snake plant I have has become a GIANT! It was smaller than one of those small snake plants you have in this video, but I had to keep putting it in larger and larger pots, and now it is over 4 and a half feet tall, and over 2 feet thick! It just grows and grows and grows! Its pot is near my glass front door, so it gets lots of late afternoon sunshine, but it's getting so enormous! Its pot is on one of those stands with wheels, or else it would be impossible to move. It was on the front porch, just outside the glass door, but since bringing it in a couple winters ago, its place inside the door has become its home. It had become so huge we could hardly get through the door! Why are all your snake plants so small after a decade? Mine just grows and grows and grows! I water it about every 3 weeks in the growing months, but only very, very lightly during the dormant months. I don't believe we can transplant it again because of its enormous weight, so I don't know how long it can remain in the big pot its growing in. I read they like being pot-bound, but don't know how long than can last. Thanks for your informative videos and happy planting! kristi
Hahahaha I'm watching this because I have a sansevieria that must be about 30 years old, but I keep repotting into a smaller pot. It's now in a 6 inch pot! It hardly has any roots and it's floppy. So I was doing everything wrong, not enough light too much water, so I'm going to up the light and stop watering so much and see what happens. To be fair I was only watering once a week but since it was in a huge pot with no roots .......😮
Super concise and helpful! Thank you so much. I love the method of checking the drainage holes rather than sticking my finger 2 inched into the soil. Thanks so much! I just love my plant.
just received this snake plant from my grandma (my first plant ever) and have had a little trouble. out of all the videos I’ve watched this was by far the most helpful one. thank u.
What happened to your friend about their plant being in the incorrect potting mix happened to me as well. I got a snake plant like 2 weeks ago at Walmart and the poor thing was panted in plain coconut coir. So I went to the craft se ting and got a bag of sand and when I got home I immediately took it out the pot, remove as much coconut coir as possible and add sand and orchid bark. Now it’s happier
suzanne here, after 40 plus years of growing these i will just say that they are NOT low light plants, they need bright light and sun shine, just not in a south window, i water once a month period, and when i take cuttings, i only root the very tip ends, in water and change it every other day, just the tips, this works i find excellent, and no rot
I can relate to the girls at target buying the fake snake plants! 😅 Due to having kids in the house or pets etc knocking the plant over & having soil spilled. I got a fake one to test this out & yes my two year old loved to play with the fake snake plant leaves🪴 as I put it next to our tv. Great & informative video! I just purchased a real one & will put it in a higher location.
Loved your video and thank you for the info. We got ours from Walmart and it shipped over around Thanksgiving time (with a heat pack in the box, along with a peace lily and monstera adansonii). The soil medium it came in was not the best (and was a bit moist and dark), but I removed some/most of it and loosened the root ball. I'm not sure if maybe I compacted the potting soil too much, but that soil came from a planter that was outside, with a previous plants roots still in the pot, and it was pretty moist throughout from the recent rain. The outside soil was a standard potting mix, with perlite in it as well, but I needed to use a scissor to cut through the roots to be able to move the soil into my ceramic pot for the snake plant, so I cut through some/most of the perlite as well, making the bits smaller. The plant soon developed a squishy leaf which has since crunched up and browned almost completely (there is one next to it that was partially crunchy and browned when I first received the plant, but it's also still partially alive). The other pieces appear to be doing fine, and some have new growths (one of them has a browned new growth). My question is, do I need to prune/remove the browned leaves? Can I leave the partially brown leaf, or does that need to be removed as well? If you can, maybe you can diagnose why it might have browned so quickly on those areas? My guess is too much water was in the soil, but not sure if I also compacted it too much, of which there is a good chance. Maybe pot size has something to do with it, but I'm looking at yours and they appear to be doing great, in spite of smaller pots (compared to plant size), and mine also being in front of a gas radiator, which is in front of a window (not sure if that would make it too humid, or too cold - not a lot of sun lately, in the NE)?
great video! if you could put time stamps of what you are covering or little titles such as "water" "humidity.." it would help those looking for specific info! thank you so much!
Wow nice video. Thanks for the info. I'm just getting into plants and I picked snake plants. I had the problem of soil too wet from time of purchase. After the third plant I just get home and change out the potting soil. Then they are good to grow
Thank you for your video. I have my sansevieria on a South facing window, they're thriving. I think when summer kicks in I'll have to move them. Lots of baby plants appearing. What's the best position for them?
Newbie here, I got a beautiful and healthy snake plant, I divide it to make three pots from one, but my question is, dont they need a big container, I see when they sell it they are all in small pots. How does it hold enormous leaves if they say not to plant them deep, please let me know because mine went bad after a couple of years.
Good morning. I’m a new subscriber and I am really enjoying your videos. In this video I thought I heard you say in the warmer months you water your sanseverieria 2x’s a week. Did you mean to say 2x’s a month?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I heard snake plants need to be pot bound to thrive....is that true? Ive had one for over 5 years thats about 2 ft tall, but the leaves are thin and always flop over. Its in a huge pot where I thought it would fill out and look good as a corner plant, but so far, not so much! Thanks kindly!
Lived the video. How do you pot them once they have an established root system? Those leaved are top heavy. Any suggestions or video I can view? Thanks.
Do they like to be in crowded pots? Also, one of my mother roots lost it’s leaves, they were tall and all of them fell off I cut the leaves that fell off and propagated them together in a jar. Will they still grow roots? The one mother root that is still in the pot, will it be ok by itself or should I repot it in a smaller more snug pot?
They love to be crowned I don’t repot mind until they are busted out of the pot. You can put them in to the water until the roots form. You also can mix different one’s together.
@@nancymccardle8206 Can I propagate leaves that fall off or are they just dead leaves? I tried propagating the ones that fell off of my snake plant following the instructions of cutting them into smaller pieces and putting them in no more than an inch of water but they swelled up/filled with water. Is that normal?
I have a small snake plant but its leaves are drooping however theres also babies growing in the middle.. Can the root be rotten if theres new plants growing? Please help me out! Thank you!
I'm a rookie and bought three relatively large snake plants and potted them in 12 wide and 16 inch high ceramic pots. I used miracle grow potting mix. It's been 5 months and they seem to be doing okay. The soil was moist and I've not watered them at all after potting. I know they're due but I'm worried I'll do so improperly. In large part to the size of the pots. Do you have any suggestions?
All of the videos I watch regarding how much to water a sansevieria nobody is specific about the amount of water to give and how often to give what amount! Like how many ounces of water should you give a 24-inch tall sansevieria and how many ounces of water should you give a 48 in tall sansevieria and how often to give that much water? I want more highly specific detailed info
I've tried the propagating thing, and every time the plant dies. The bottom of the leaf ends up discolored and dead looking. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
I want mine to get big enough for huge pots so I can place the pots in a bare spot between my yard and the neighbor's yard. My hedges stop too soon and every new family in that house (approx yearly) brings a dog that loves to traipse into our yard via that bare spot. I want my snakes to get big enough to serve as a "fence" or "gate" in that bare spot. Can I leave my potted snake plants outside during the Winter in GA Zone 7b (Mableton)?
my snake plant got ripped apart and now it has one root will it live or die ? should i stick it back in the soil or should i put it in water to root more
My snake plant is splitting and cracking, I keep mine outside most of the time since the weather has been beautiful so I can’t understand why. I also wipe them down every 3rd day so I know there’s no pest. Pls help!
I need help, my snake plant is starting to shrivel up at the base. It's curling in ward. They are still sticking straight up and are not dropping. I have it on the window sill so I was thinking that maybe it is getting too much light? What do you think this could be?
Peering through the base where there is a lot of density in the snake plant, I see small spider strands. Are these dust mites? I have been spraying with neem oil daily for 2 weeks and the webs (not many) seem to still be there
I had the same problem with a ZZ plant that sits next to my Sanseveria. Neem oil didn't work. I then used a couple drops of dish soap, about an ounce of rubbing alcohol and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. I spritzed ALL of the plants in the area of the ZZ plant. Spider mites go from plant to plant if they're near one another. I did that 2 days in a row and didn't see anymore webs on the ZZ. After that scare, I went and purchased Captain Jack's Dead Bug (by Bonide) which kills anything on plants but not the plants.
They say that the best time to repot any plant is during growing season. But for snake plants - i have tried to repot anytime as soon as I see that they are super root bound . Good luck and happy planting
bought a small little birds nest sanseveria from walmart.. put it in a tiny terracotta pot.. kept it next to the tv in almost no light and watered it twice in almost 2 months..... now its making a lil baby and its sooo cute haha 😂
