Watching you reminds me how I used to be when I was a little kid - very calm around these critters. It's funny now as a father I actually do get nervous around snakes now - not bad, but not as super calm as you. I appreciate this reminder and greatly respect your teaching people the correct and safe way to trap other lifeforms: with reverence.

I was once fly fishing in a little southern California mountain creek and I watched a small/medium garter snake slither into the water and submerge itself completely, and then emerge a few seconds later with a 8" brown trout in its mouth. It then proceeded to battle the fish onto the bank and slowly ate it, all while the fish was flopping wildly. A lot of people (including me for many years) don't realize how aquatic garter snakes can be, although the one you caught looks to be different type/species than the ones I see out here.

Hi Bob, Great video. If you have a dremel or engraver, the Gee's G-40 end ring offers plenty of room to engrave your info right on the trap so it can be easily identified. If someone has possession of your trap your name is right on the trap.Greg Popovice,Tackle Factory

+Bob Hansler Do you only catch them to look at them and release ? One guy in a statement about mentioned he sold rattle snakes to Texas A & M . Do you sell any ? I never thought about snakes as a commodity ? Thanks. Nice Video !
@BobHansler
@BobHansler 8 лет назад
WH The reptile trade can be a lucrative endeavor, selling those that are venomous is even more so. I do not sell any of the snakes I catch, though at times I have kept a few for a short duration to show to classes or youth groups. I cannot see taking a healthy creature from its environment in order to enclose it in a cell for personal enjoyment as many do. I would consider donating them for research or labs to use in the production of anti-venom. Just care about my creatures and see too many people trying to bring nature into their houses for shallow reasons instead of going out into nature and becoming a part of it. If one is to handle snakes as I do on any consistent basis, the proper tags and licenses need to be purchased as per the state and the federal/local laws should be well known before making any attempt. Good question.

Good videos Bob. I bet you could make these traps out of vines and branches if you wanted to. Snakes and frogs are always good bait too. Cut them into bite size pieces and put them on hooks and they're real tough for the fish to take. The innards would be good for fish chum and snares.
