Two years later and Snapchat is still going strong. Among my age group, Snapchat isn’t really a social media app, but more of a messaging app. Stories are a social media thing but the messaging is much more important, whereas with twitter and Instagram messaging is not nearly as important as posting.

Snapchat is one of the poorest apps I have ever used performance-wise. It smacks of something that was built with great haste and little care in a hackathon, and then the development team were too busy adding as many features as they could think of to ever do any refactoring or optimisation.

Rewatching the video and hearing Matt say that he doesn't have a crappy phone- he has an iPhone 6 and I laugh... then I remember how old this video is and that it was a good phone back then.

The only problem really, besides the style and snapchat app, is circular 10 second video. If I could record 16:9 landscape video or take pictures then it would be much better.

They look much better on Tom. Matt's got 50 shades, maybe Tom should keep this one!

Android user comment here: Currently using an S8+ where the app works for the most part, but my previous two phones constantly crashed and lagged out when using snapchat. I thought iPhones had it better than I!

I spent MONTHS trying to figure out where all these snapchat filters with dog ears and things were coming from, only to go to my kid brother and have him say 'you just tap and hold on your face'. I GOOGLED THIS BEFORE AND GOT NO ANSWER! Why do they not have instructions? WHY?

You know you're old when you call Snapchat Spectacles, Snaptacles!

I, too, think the UI is absolutely abysmal, the app crashes all the time, and yet still use it. I'm in my mid twenties, and I've had to be shown how to do anything other than take then post a photo.

If someone came up with a wearable sunglasses-camera-thing that was as high resolution as was possible, tried to film linearly when possible etc and was... perhaps, bright orange or something, something obvious that says "YES THIS IS A CAMERA AND I'M A VIDEOGRAPHER FILMING YOU" for the purposes of specifically mapping out VR and the like, how would you guys feel about that? I feel like Matt's comment about "WOW you're tall" kind of brings home to me that people don't want VR footage from a gopro, they want VR footage from someone's faceholes.

I think the lack of explanation of the interface is an intentional decision. Kids, and adults too, feel really clever when they discover a way to do something unusual, so forcing users to learn everything by experimentation it's just a way to get at that feeling.

Snapchat is still definitely the main platform for stories things for the teens of Victoria (Australia) and Paris.

From a teenager no snapchat is nowhere near dead all my friends care way too much about streaks and their score on Snapchat to just give it up. Instagram stories are far more missable but literally everyone will watch everyone's snap story and it isn't going anywhere for a good while.

Matt's friends might prefer IG but young people prefer snapchat.

Android user here! The Android app is actually really bad. For a while there, it didn't so much take a photo to send as it used a screenshot from the live video coming from our cameras. That was years ago, but we had our frustrating experiences.

I still dont understand how this hatred towards google glass got started. The idea of having a HUD at all times sounds fantastic.

You know you're living in the future when your sunglasses case runs out of battery so you can't charge your sunglasses.

So the problem, as with anything Snapchat, is that the idea is alright, and the execution is complete shite.

When i was in India i encountered three butterflies clustering together and then fluttering off. It only happened for a few seconds so i couldn't catch it on film, and since then i've kinda wanted some really simple recording tech always on the standby. Although A, i don't know about shades, and B, i don't know about frickin snapchat.

I think the "odd" number was 738 because that's my computer's resolution.

How did you guys get the circular video to play then? What was the editing process like? And Tom you actually look good(enough) with those sunglasses. I didn't know Tom's lips were shaped like cat/fish lips, it looks like a lot of supermodels.

So, a bizzare quirk of framing... Watching this video in fullscreen on my laptop, every time a car entered from the right, my brain for a split second would process it as a notification.

So, how did you manage to take pictures in a museum? It's practically a felony over here.

Google Glass had a visual LED to indicate recording as well, the problem was people covered it up because it was annoying. Seems like the same is easy to do here.

I love when people in the background do things. There's always about two seconds of action before the sudden realisation that they look a bit of tit.

Snapchat isn't close to dead. It's a lot more fun than before even. It's just that the stories feature is more convenient in other places.

You can export your Spectacles videos from memories and there will be a white circular border around the video.
