Snapper Fishing | Tips for Rock Fishing - Do FREAK WAVES Exist ??

A slow fishng trip off the rocks distancer casting for snapper but with a good result.
I talk briefly about rock fishing safety, the freak wave myth, a little about what to look out for, what to avoid but did not want to make it into a rock fishing safety video as this would take a lot more than the quick examples I mentioned.
Back to the fishing, I thought it was going to be only the flathead on this trip then this snapper comes along! #snapper #rockfishing#fishing

so true about the freak waves, they dont come out of absolutely nowhere. Very important to check the swell and especially the conditions on the day
@AlexBellissimo
@AlexBellissimo Год назад
Very well said 👍 Huge miss interpretation about so called freak waves. Reading waves is far more than just checking the swell. Sets and lull time needs to be factored in.

@davidmcnamara7489 Год назад
The BOM website has good info on waves. The BOM gives regular predictions of swell and seas. But it estimates one in seven waves will be bigger, and at least three waves each day will be twice as big. So, as you say, we need to study local conditions before fishing, and then keep a close watch. The hardest thing is to just go home when it feels risky. There will be other days to fish. 🤓👍

There are many reasons anglers get in to really big trouble. A lot of anglers cannot see a wave till it is too close. It take some experience to see a wave 200m plus out to se approaching.

I’ve tried night fishing off rock walls in Perth but it felt so sketchy not being able to see what’s coming…
@AlexBellissimo
@AlexBellissimo Год назад
Well rock fishing at night is dangerous. But I pick my nights preferably flat seas. slow down walking pace for a start, too many holes and cracks.

Hi Peter Maybe they might but quite often it is the sinker getting snagged no the hook

Cracker fish man, I think a large part of rock safety is just being aware and having some common sense. I got my first ever sketchy moment last weekend, I left a rod down on the front of the ledge, turned to see it washed into a pool and got a soaking as i retrieved it. luckily i fish relatively shallow water and the surges aren't too powerful, did pack it up there as the light was fading. Love your basic rock stuff, still trying to get a drummer, luderick and snapper in one session myself haha cheers
@AlexBellissimo
@AlexBellissimo Год назад
Thanks for your message Ja cheers. Yes a lot of it is common sense, not being too stubborn and knowing 'your 'limits not the limits of more advanced anglers. That great you did not get too stitched up and you go out safely👌

freak waves exist - they are statistically very rare but they're out there
@AlexBellissimo

That may be the case. I just have not encountered them myself on my client trip and for the last fourth five years of rock fishing.

Why is he using such a massive stick? Do I need to buy one that big?
@harrywest6624
@harrywest6624 Год назад
It really depends on so many different variables. Best would be to search for videos of people fishing at the places you will be going and see what gear they use and what fish they catch, and go from there
@AlexBellissimo
@AlexBellissimo Год назад
Good answer Harry cheers
@AlexBellissimo
@AlexBellissimo Год назад
Rock fisherman should use a rod minimum length 10 foot so you don't need to stand too close to the rock edge near the ocean. This is just one reason.
@davidmcnamara7489
@davidmcnamara7489 Год назад
A long rod also helps keeps your line high above exposed rocks, and it helps to steer the fish away from rocks when they try to escape under rock ledges.
@redtobertshateshandles
@redtobertshateshandles Год назад
I disagree about freak waves, they exist. I was fishing the rocks on a dead flat day but erred on the side of caution and stayed up a bit higher on the ledge. After a couple of hours two large waves swept the lower platform , and there were no more waves that afternoon. I live around Northern Wollongong where the rocks are low to the water. I'm always cautious.
@AlexBellissimo
@AlexBellissimo Год назад
Hi Red yes you may have seen a freak wave. I have not encountered any freak waves for the sixteen and a half years as a rock/beach fishing guide and the last fourth five years of recreational rock fishing I have done. Guess I have just not been there when it happened 🤔
