The thing about Snarky Puppy and this session in particular is that you never know which one of them is going to absolutely own the room. Larnell Lewis showed up that day and channeled real genius - yet he was matched in Sleeper by Shaun Martin. He was matched by Cory Henry in Lingus. He was matched by Bob on sax in Outlier. If God existed he'd have got the credit for We Like It Here. It's the pinnacle of human achievement. I'm blown away, honestly

That sax solo is just the cleanest fucking thing. That run at 5:03 is just bliss

This definitely has its roots in 15/8 time, but their musicianship makes it feel like a straight groove, like it’s nothing out of the ordinary. Remarkable track! :)

Thank you so much for checking out the video and for pointing out that fact, that's really cool! You're right, the fact that it was in odd time slipped my radar because of how naturally and smoothly it all flowed together.

@Drum Guy I can get down with that. There are moments when the hook of this song feels more like a big sexy 5, which is why I gravitate towards counting in eighths. Lol
@ChrisLee-yr7tz
@ChrisLee-yr7tz 2 года назад
You can validly count it in 3s which kinda gives it this feeling of being straight but the phrasing is really 6 + 6 + 3, hence the 15, and that final 3 gives this lovely feeling of driving forward. I totally love it and think it really makes this track.

The support the band gives each other is phenomenal. They are clearly having fun, but also taking great joy in each other's musicianship. So very, very tight...

Dude! This is my favorite Snarky song because its darker, and meaner like you said! BUT now you have one more to go and thats "What about me"! Larnell the drummer is fucking KILLING it in that song, and I think you will like it because its much more prog than the others. you can hear Mars Volta, Patton stuff, Yes stuff, King Crimson. Killer guitar solo also! Then the circle is complete!

Thank you so much for checking out the video! I'm looking forward to checking out "What About Me?" very soon. I absolutely love how Larnell plays! DEFINITELY up my alley if it goes into the prog spectrum of things :).

I def love “What About Me”, but I still think this track believe it or not showcases Larnell’s ability more than the track that features him lol His ability to keep those dotted eighth hits going in a 15 feel over a sax solo and builds to 5:10 is just ridiculous! It’s so fire you’ll notice one of the violinists giving him serious eyes for the remainder of the tune. Truly badass!

Thankyou for reacting to this. I'd forgotten how badass this tune is. You get used to seeing all the 'big hitters' that some of the other "We Like It Here" tunes get missed out and they're all brilliant!

I really appreciate that you let the songs play through with minimal commentary, then give nicely insightful reactions at the end. And it’s fun just watching you listen. I don’t know how the bulk of other “reaction” makers can really get a song when they keep stopping every minute or 2.

Well, lemme put it this way... He was a last-minute fill-in that night. After that night, he _is_ their usual drummer. Soooo... take from that what you will about the old drummer. xD

All of the heavy hitters on this album Jambone, what about me, and Lingus are absolutely amazing tunes but it was this one that absolutely blew my mind. I don’t know if we could fairly call it 15 eight because it’s more nine I would say because you have two bars of six and then you have one bar of three in the sections where it changes to 5/8 and 7/8. But this one actually branches on metal which is what I like about it because it’s more Rockys and jazzy but it’s still jazzy enough to be well in the jazz category.
