What a gift to my life the music of Snatam Kaur is. I am so happy she performed this beautiful Shabad today for millions who may have never heard this kind of devotional music before. Wahe Guru!

I'm Christian and I cherish this music also. I think its from the divine as much as anything I hear in church? Snatam is a serious gift. When I just now saw this was on the Grammys at first it was exciting that so many people might hear it but then I thought "but it will be lost on them. Such an ordinary venue, often celebrating such ridiculous things." But my Bible says the word doesn't return void. So I have to trust that the truth she gave in that performance touched the truth in everyone who heard it, and blessed everyone accordingly as God saw fit to bless them...and us listening via RU-vid and those who will find more of her music as a result...to those who heard this music and were healed and those who are seeking reconciliation God as a result of hearing it. God is so above all this petty religion and division...can bless anyone any way that he chooses? I'm just grateful that Snatam Kaur is open to being utilized as an instrument of peace!

I just came from her concert tonight here in Vancouver and she was amazing! So excited to see that she played the Grammy's this year!!! Although her voice sounded shaky. And it was an unfortunate choice of song. She's so much better than this video portrays.

I can't believe this! Amazing! Shabad sung in a very devotional manner, could be made even better when sung in the original melodic frame (Raag Asa) as written in the SGGS.
@stephenmoore6406
@stephenmoore6406 5 лет назад
Respectfully, you make a good point. But would western ears accept the original melodic frame (Raag Asa) ? This Shabad made history (herstory) for the Grammys. Each culture has its own melodic scale and sound current. I love Indian-classical and traditional raags myself, but I also play music. My ears (and mind) understand the sound-current and shruti behind it.
@kirtan9289
@kirtan9289 5 лет назад
@@stephenmoore6406 I agree with everything you have said. It was never my intention to downplay Snatam's performance. Instead, I am joyous that Gurbani (Word of the Guru) is reaching a wider audience through her efforts. Snatam did not merely deliver a performance, she is reciting Bani which has been ordained in certain Raags that enhance one's spiritual experience (Following the Guru's instruction is our 'Hukum'). I understand very well that each culture has its own melodic scale. I was not merely praising the Indian-classical music genre, I was praising it in the context of Gurbani. I hope you try to see where I am coming from. Peace.

I’ve been following Snatam for a while now, she has far better songs than this one. Still very beautiful. A shinning light in that pit of darkness the music industry has become. They don’t deserve her...
@baroqueandbeyond
@baroqueandbeyond 5 лет назад
She said that this was the song (shabad) that the academy requested for her to sing at the Grammy Awards. She doesn't sing it in concert (at least, at the concert I attended for her Beloved Tour). Some parts are uncomfortable for her upper register. I also think she was rather nervous, at least in the beginning of the performance. It's not her very best singing. I agree; it's still very beautiful, and it was nice for Snatam to be included.

She inspires us all (who call ourselves Sikhs) to listen and bring Gurbani in our life. We are SO UNFORTUNATE that many of us can't even have the courage to look in the mirror that Gurbani shows us. - Eh man Aarsi koi Gurmukh Dekhai - We can't even listen to the blunt facts that Gurbani brings up. Maybe they just trying to show that God is beyond religion.. If you read about Guru Nanak ji - Sikhs first human form teacher then you to learn that his childhood friend was a muslim.. they both went on journeys educating the world about One God and One Human Race. His muslim first was the instrument player while Guru nanak ji sang hymns of love and oneness.

Cultural appropriation, if only real Indian cultures were shown in the West, not Western impersonators. Still, the music is beautiful. Just misses the beauty of the authentic artists. If Westerners performed Buddhist/Rastafarian/Samurai/Gospel there would be loud cries of cultural appropriation, rightly so. Why not with this?
