SNES Cartridge Adapter - Don't Cut Your Console!

I hate to see people cutting the top of Super Nintendos to allow US games to fit, absolute sacrilege!
So, this means to play NTSC (US) games on a PAL system you can either switch the boards into PAL cartridge casings (nasty option) or you need some sort of adapter... After much scouring of the web for the right bit of kit I found it, and here is where I got mine:
www.ebay.co.uk/...
Laters taters.

While the intention of this video was certainly good, putting an eBay link and expect it to last forever, without even mentioning the exact name of the item (or even its original price) was a bit awkward and not very smart. Those adapters can still be found as of May 2018, but under the funky name of *"Brand New Protection Socket Slot for Super Nintendo Super Famicom To SNES SFC SF"* and a bit slightly expansive to my taste ($50 minus shipping). It seems like buying those double-adapters (AD-29 or equivalent) or even an Action Replay-like cartridge will be the cheapest option now.

So are these things just simple passthrough carts? Thats all I need since I'm going to mod mine so no need for the fancy region bypass mechanism.
@Dioxaz
@Dioxaz 4 года назад
@@CodeStew What's presented in the video is indeed a simple passthrough. They can still be found on eBay as of April 2020 under that same "*Brand New Protection Socket Slot for Super Nintendo Super Famicom To SNES SFC SF*" name but for $45 now. On the other hand, the AD-29 option and other region adapters similar to the AD-29 with double-slot are cheaper (because used items, not custom-built), can be used as passthrough but you'll need a second game of whatever region to make the AD-29 and similar work as passthrough. Putting only one cartridge on top of an AD-29, the console won't boot. But it might be possible to modify one of those to act as passthrough-only.

It would honestly be better to import an American SNES rather than use a PAL SNES for 2 Reasons: 1. Due to how most games were developed under NTSC (Japanese and North American TV Standards) Conditions. When these games were converted to PAL Format, they had to be slowed down to match up with European Electric Standards as well as having the video squished because of how different PAL TVs are ;-; 2. It is really easy to "mod" an American SNES to play Japanese games by removing the tabs inside the cartridge reading slot rather than import a Japanese Super Famicom and destroy the shell for American Games ;-;

Helloz World well this is a solution for europeans, and nobody cares if the speed is fucked up, hell ive been putting up with bad pal ports for my whole life (early genesis titles were not at all modified for europe until 1992), i mean most famicom games are sold for CENTS as if they're candy, who cares if its slower.

Since looking for this adaptor, I've found a few things out - to the benefit of anyone who reads this message!!! If you have a modified PAL (Super Nintendo) or NTSC-J (Super Famicom) Snes which can play games from any region - but have noticed that American NTSC (Super Nintendo) cartridges are a little too wide to fit into the console, then do the following: 1. Open up an NTSC game cartridge, and take out the circuit board. 2. Open up a PAL game cartridge, and take out the circuit board. 3. Put the NTSC circuit board into the PAL (or indeed the NTSC-J Famicom) cartridge game case. 4. Be happy you didn't have to buy and adaptor, and play as many NTSC games as you want on your PAL console! Note: all circuit boards fit in any region case, but no matter what shape the circuit boards are - if you are swapping out FX games (with the additional contacts either side of the main connector) - then likewise, swap the corresponding game cases to match!!! Have a 'Super' day! ;)

@Stevo_1985
@Stevo_1985 4 года назад
@@gameman2936 Hey, yes, but only if your console has been modified to play multi region games :) The game chips are all the same size, they're simply packaged in different size plastics. But there's a tiny bit of code that identifies the 'local' region of your console, so once your console has been modified to overcome this region lock, you're free to play any region game by the case swapping mehod :) I hope that helps!

The tab mod really isn't that difficult, though. Yeah, you need to be just a little careful, but it doesn't take long and clean-up is pretty easy. Plus, I'd rather mod my SNES for free than have to buy extra hardware.

In North America, function is more important than design. That's why we get the boxy,industrialized look.
@VinchVolt
@VinchVolt 7 лет назад
Actually the reason the SNES was redesigned in America was because Nintendo of America wanted to refute Sega's claims that Nintendo was a kiddy company. The Genesis had begun to really pick up steam among gamers with Sonic the Hedgehog a couple months prior, and the system's main gimmick was that it was meant to be a console for teenagers. The choice of design for the American SNES was based on computers that were popular in 1991, hence the boxy gray and purple look (note that purple was considered a "technological" color back then).

Perhaps the design of the SNES in different regions might've had something to do with the design of cars! Here in Australia & New Zealand, our cars were a little more sleeker & curvier than in the USA, hence the reason of why we got the Super Famicom design!

The one in the video is different. It is the 72 pin to 60 pin adapter, it's the reverse adapter that we have here in the States that we use to play Famicom games on our NTSC/American Nintendo. The pin picture of the video that he doesn't mention is called a Hyperkin 60 to 72 pin adapter for the (NTSC/American) Nintendo. Not sure what exact adapter he is using but it's just the reverse adapter of ours. I was in Australia and if you have the correct televison. An American SNES will work with certain TVs but I could never get it to work while in Australia. Here in the States we just remove these tiny tabs inside the slot of the cartidge. The Super Famicom games fit into our systems with no issue once the tabs are broken/taken off because we use more pins obviously. If you need some American SNES LMK LoL we have more than enough here but I'm sure the shipping is going to be outrages.

I find it worrying that you think NTSC versions of SNES games look inferior to the PAL ones, considering how what you call "square and ugly" is actually how they were meant to be seen. That's like refusing to watch a movie in widescreen just because it leaves black bars on your smaller screen.
