In this video I explain what is happening to the cue-ball when we play with side-spin. I try to cover exactly how the balls behave and how we can then adjust our aiming so that we make the pot!

This is the first time I’ve seen a video of playing a shot with side and how it affects as to weather the object ball goes down or not. It has been explained extremely clearly and I actually understand what Steve is saying. Thank You so much Steve for your incredible instructional videos.

This is, by far, the best video I’ve seen (and I have watched a lot of videos!) on the effects of side spin when pocketing the object ball, and controlling the after-shot position of the cue ball. The use of dynamic diagraming, combined with on-screen text really clarifies the entire shot process. Beautiful job!

Excellent explanation of the use of side and how certain degrees of power and extreme side can throw the white differently. I remember my coach Neil Johnson telling me experiment with different degrees of side with various amounts of power and also short distance and long distance. I’m struggling at the minute with long distance safety and shots to nothing using side and plain ball. My eyesight is either going or my setup I.e. technique / sighting has changed as I took 2 months away from the game. I’m planning to visit my coach again in the coming months to revise my setup. You’re a great coach I always watch your videos as I like your interactive, visual and explanatory nature of how you put together your videos. It gives the viewer a feel of actually being there with you by way of you including the power meter and various camera angles, etc. Brilliant coach. I look forward to the upcoming vids 😀💪

I'm an old American pool player who is fascinated with the game of snooker and the skills I see. You have my respect. I have never used side spin unless it was top or screw side spin and then, only a tip either way from center. I have only been concerned for what happens to the object ball when using spin. I call it throwing the object ball. I never had lessons but I did learn tips from good pool players that were older than me. Thanks for a great video. You are a talented teacher.

Great explanation of spin. Watched many other videos of this , none come close to yours. I have been breaking with a lot of spin, the same principle for hitting the head ball. I am not getting a good hit on head ball because my English is pushing me off a direct hit. Will have to compensate for English to get the direct hit on breaks. Thanks

@Knightlore10
@Knightlore10 4 года назад
Nigel Bond gave me an excellent tip about using 'helping side'. In cases where you have too much angle on say the black to hold for the next red, use helping side (running side) to hit the black thick and still make the pot to hold position. Brilliant tip that has helped me to continue breaks.
@vmax4steve524
@vmax4steve524 4 года назад
You don't hit the black thick, you aim the black thick because the cue ball has deflected, swerved a tad and therefore has approached the black from a different line which helps to hold it. It's very slight this deflection and swerve, but it's crucial to offset your aiming to allow for it.

Thanks for this! I've just spent an hour trying to pot a straight blue with a lots of side. They were flying in and the white spent serious time spinning after. A little compensation in the aim and a good strike, cannot believe how much I've learned about my cue today, it has a lot less throw than I thought. My cue's 16 1/2 ounces, would you say that a lighter cue has less throw?

Great video, but! From my experience, the cue ball always flicks the object ball slightly on its way to the pocket, depending on the side spin of the cue ball. For example, if you are playing the shot with lefthand side, the cue ball is gonna flick the object ball a bit to the right on its way to the pocket, so thats one more thing to keep in mind, but very difficult to judge sometimes :)

The arc effect will depend on the nap of the cloth too. When playing from baulk end to black end, the cue ball will drift back to its original path, but if you are playing against the nap from black end to baulk end, the cue ball will drift further from the original path.

Greta video mate very clear… I have a question if someone can help me….even after accounting for deflection the side I put on the que ball generates opposite swerve on the object ball I tested it a few times and it seems the ball will always kick the opposite side, is this a case of deflection that I can’t see or does the rotation of the cue call cause the opposite reaction to the object ball ??

You forgot to mention using left hand side will kick the object ball to the right, and right hand side will kick the object ball to the left. For some side spin shot where deflection is not a lot , you can still aim without compensation due to this effect.

@crazyrichdolls3860
@crazyrichdolls3860 4 года назад
This is definitely the third factor to compensate when using side. Like you said when side is applied, the friction of the cue ball will "kick" the object ball to the opposite side, I would say up to 5° which makes some impossible thin cuts possible. Some players say the side spin of the cue ball "transfer" to the object ball and I think the term "transfer" is misleading, it merely "kick" the object ball by a few degrees.
@rickywong4054
@rickywong4054 4 года назад
@@crazyrichdolls3860 the side spin does transfer to the object ball, it is used when you are trying to pot a ball that is sticking to the cushion, the very small transfered spin will grasp the cushion a little bit to stick to the cushion.
@crazyrichdolls3860
@crazyrichdolls3860 4 года назад
@@rickywong4054 I've experimented a lot with this but I really don't feel the transfer, I've seen slow motion videos on youtube which also doesn't show the object ball with transferred side spin. Do you have any good videos which show otherwise?
