Nationwide snowfall with the north west of the country the worst affected.
In Sligo town, there were deep snow drifts and impassable roads. Many trucks were abandoned at Rathcormac as the snow froze and road conditions worsened. Conditions in Galway are worsening too with heavy snow. Sheep farmers fear the loss of lambs in the snow with difficult grazing conditions. Racing was called off at Fairyhouse Racecourse in County Meath. This was just one of many sporting events cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
While the weather provides fun and games for children, it has made life difficult for motorists and older people. Most of the main roads around Dublin remained opened and the city centre was not badly disrupted by the snow. Not far away in Bray, a CIÉ bus collided with a lamppost on a steep hill. Trains too experienced delays with snow jamming some of the points along the railway lines.
Bus services have been badly disrupted all over the country.
The Met office is forecasting further snow especially in the south of the country with some towns cut off. The also say that the snow is freezing and slush is turning to ice creating further hazards on the roads. High ground in many parts of the country has been worst affected.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 11 February 1978. The reporter is Derek Davis.

Wow glad I missed this weather. I cycled England Wales Scotland and Ireland for 6 months that year. Definitely was cool and wet at times that summer in Ireland. Best trip I ever took. Saw DeDannan in Ballyshannon festival fell in love with trad music and have been playing it ever since. Made many friends since with same love for music I acquired. One friend sadly passed recently from Castlebar Noel Kilkenny a great banjo player

Could be wrong, but I think that was Derrick Davis narrating. Rest in peace, big man ❤❤

I remember that year, I was 5 it was fun, pulling sleds behind trucks, digging snow tunnels in the piles of snow, and sliding out of control with rear wheel drive cars.

Snow like that was a staple of my childhood, great memories even though we’d no idea how hard it must have been for the adults. Now we’re lucky to get a few days of ice…

You don't get snow anymore? Where I live is the opposite we used to get snow every few years mabye a couple inches and then every 5 or 6 years a good snow if kiek 6 to 10 inches. The last 5 years we have a got a large snow storm every year and a few smaller snow storms. Last year we got 15 inches over a couple days. This year we only got 5 inches but we never used to get snow and cold like this

@@christianterrill3503 Where I live in the east of Ireland we rarely get anything significant anymore; mostly ice or heavy frost. Any fall of snow is usually light and gone by the end of the day. There were of course some anomalies, like the Beast form the East in 2018 which swamped the country for three days and in December/January 2009 & 2010 ourselves and the UK had what seemed like a never ending snow-freeze-snow-freeze etc. scenario that lasted a few weeks but life still continued. But generally and the vast majority of the time, we get fairly mild winters now.

More snow here too from about 78 to 82. We had the first 70+ degree Christmas Eve I had expected in 82 as well. Lots more solar flare activity lately as well.

I remember this well - my little brother was being christened and his godfather, my Uncle Paddy, couldn't get up to Dublin as he was snowed in down in Tipperary. We had to get a neighbour to stand in.

Renault 4 in multiple, including van and the one that may have slid gently into the wall behind the Mercedes. They don't make news reports like this anymore, which is only to be expected i suppose.

"After showing these pictures earlier, we've been advised this is dangerous. But sure look. It's 1978 & wtf does any of us know? It's not like you're watching this in 2023..... So I say have at it !" Love how the women were risking their lives & the man was driving. Equality at it's finest

Whoa there, soy boy! Those women were not "risking their lives". They were helping out. If anyone, it was the bloke driving was the one who was really "risking his life". That car could have skidded down the road into a lake or under the trailer of a juggernaut, while the two women stood there blessing themselves and waving their towels.
