I wanted snow, cold, sky and sun. I got it ALL. A great snow camp high above Castleton in The Peak District National Park. With the Great Mam Tor as my guardian I settled down alone, up high above the impressive ‘Windy Gates’ now known as Winnats Pass. i watched owls hunt by moonlight and woke up to a huddle of sheep nestled into the hillside near the tent. A stunning pink dusky sky and an orange blue twilight made this a memorable camp to cherish ✨⛺️✨ thank you for watching, all the best, Sarah

Thankyou so much Sarah, I did leave a long comment the other day but it seems to have disappeared? It may be in your youtube study comments under being held for approval as I used the word b ugg er so it might have been flagged as inappropriate lol, but it wasn't lol, what a fantastic vid to have dedicated to me, honestly had tears in my eyes at your lovely gesture, getting told your cancer free is like having a huge morbid black cloud lifted from you, you'll never truly know how much your videos have helped me getting through my darkest days, just coming along with you and seeing the views I long for would totally lift my spirits 😊 so thankyou for everything and mostly for just being you 😊👍

What a real pleasure to read your comment! I can’t see the original but I’ll search for it in Studio. I am in Awe of you Mick. I have known since watching your videos that you’ve been unwell but you didn’t dwell you kept going out into your local lands filming what you wanted and even your Temu reviews at home with your wife made me feel so warm and connected to you as a virtual friend inbetween my arduous shifts. I think when we watch each others videos us campers, it’s a reciprocal relationship and one that keeps on giving, we can pick up when we can and enjoy the vids over and over depending on our mood. I am so thrilled that you’ve found my vids in the Peak District enjoyable and I will always see you in my virtual audience as I chat crap int’ hills in me tent lad 😂 THANK YOU MICK ❤️

Hi Sarah, another great wild camp and certainly looked a cold one, but with your Soulo and the all the correct gear you know you will be safe, secure and warm. I have rece the area a few times and even found a couple of ledges to bivvy on, but planning a summer bivvy it was so busy with people and it put me off. But such a awesome location with the view down to the road, would be worth it for the great drone footage you would get, so maybe one day, untill the next one.....thanks Pat

Hi Pat 😊 always enjoy seeing your comment pop up and very much like yourself I enjoy replying to them all, taking the time to thank people and listen to their stories brings me a lot of joy. I hope that you get out up there, it was maybe a little too close to civilisation for me but the breathtaking familiar views made this camp special. Go in winter 🥶 I was all alone up there! There were two people out on top until about 6pm but they disappeared. I would love a drone one day. Your footage of kinder scout it etched in my mind, I must have seen it 10 times, I’m glad I can play it on repeat! See ya on the next one, ATB, Sarah

Oh Sue, I’m so sorry to hear your story. Unfortunately I have witnessed the ending of someone’s life in the most tragic circumstances and can find that stuff quite triggering especially in the job that I do which is full of trauma as much as it is full of beauty and new beginnings. The emotion work of midwifery sure can get me down at times only may be lifted back up with possibilities and positivity, as an empathetic person this can be tough. Hence forth my camping escapades from the responsibilities of life. Being responsible for JUST ME feels extremely freeing in a world where I am continuously conforming to rules and regulations. As for the pre cloth please tell me more! I hate using toilet paper 🧻 as for the stove, you’re a sucker like me 😆🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 happy spending! Isn’t it awesome? BW, Sarah

New to your channel and enjoyed your cheery style Two gear questions: What's your initial thoughts on the Big Agnes for comfort+ warmth ? What's the wee meths cooker setup and how much meths do you go through for a couple brews & a couple meals ? Looking forward to more of your adventures and chatter 🙂
@SoloSarahBX
@SoloSarahBX 8 месяцев назад
Welcome aboard! The Big Agnes was a delight to use. It went down to probably -5 that night and I didn’t feel any cold through the mat. It’s very thick and insulated. It’s quiet and the mattress style baffles are very comfortable as a side sleeper. The stove is by ‘Speedster Stoves’ it’s the Boarder raider cook set. I used the 50ml burner in this video and it’s enough to boil 500mls very cold water and burns some after too. I cooked a steak and potatoes in my last video with just 50ml. I take an 8oz bottle of bio ethanol with me and always come home with a third spare. Sometimes I just light the stove for warmth and lighting ☺️

Hey Sarah, thank you for another lovely video. You make really easy to watch and interesting vids. Can I ask is all the footage filmed on your phone ? Inc the stunning night vehicle trails up the pass ? I think you’re using the petal bindi headtorch - used mine on both of my recent completions of the pennine way
@SoloSarahBX
@SoloSarahBX 8 месяцев назад
Hi Mark 👋🏻 thank you for watching it’s much appreciated. Yes at present I record each clip on my iPhone 12. I use a gimbal that I got from Amazon and a tripod. I then use CapCut editing app and put the videos together using my phone including adding some music. I use the Boya microphone which plugs into the charging port on my phone. I do a simple Timelapse set up on my tripod for the cars on the pass and I’m always chuffed with how it turns out. 😊 yes the pretzel bindi head torch is a great lightweight torch that is super bright. Perfect for camping and my running escapades. ATB, Sarah

I went up to the Pass today on the back of watching your video yesterday just so I could drive on that road! I love your optimism in what you do. I’m on the cusp of doing a wild camp but I’m far off from you guys that do it. Too much anxiety to give it that push.
@SoloSarahBX
@SoloSarahBX 8 месяцев назад
Hey 👋🏻 that’s brilliant! It’s not great weather out there either. It’s a wonderful place regardless of the weather though. I think once you gather enough kit to go on a camp just go for it. There’s nothing stopping us apart from our thoughts when we get to a certain point. It’s not easy to overcome that anxiety. I’ve been there. The best advice I was given was “don’t leave it too long until the next one” I havnt looked back. I went to a familiar location away from the popular spots in summer after a camp on a campsite with all my dogs. I eased my anxiety gently and then really started to enjoy it, hence the making of my channel to share with others. Keep planning and visiting places and I’m sure you will bite the bullet at some point to just go 👍🏻ATB, Sarah

Was that ambulance for the sheep. It's surprising how many limping sheep there are I reckon it's too expensive to get them treated.
@SoloSarahBX
@SoloSarahBX 8 месяцев назад
The ambulance was stuck in the procession of cars waiting to get up Winnats Pass. They sounded the siren 🚨 to clear the sheep, it worked. I had to edit a lot of the footage out due to the beeping car noise 😮‍💨 I’m sure she got bk down to the flock in the end poor thing. I had to try and forget about her, my love for animals is strong! I dragged a sheep out of Derwent reservoir after a wild swim, she was petrified as she’d become stuck in a bush in the water so was heavy and tired. I got her out and she ran, I was really pleased that day ☺️

@#solosarah it's wierd. If i had not hurt my knee on Wednesday I was going to camp winnets... I have only bad news about my trekology aluft pillow... after only a few camps it started going down.. not fully, just enough to annoy. Though I still use it... am going to get the flextail pillow when I think i have had my money's worth from the trekology... all my kit is clean ,dry and recharged after my peak district trip... storm isha is apparently bringing 40+ mph winds to my local area tomorrow (Sunday ).. so I will have to get out again.. i loaded a little video of me up kinder scout , it's me packing the tent up Wednesday morning .... it's the first thing I have posted. Take care out there ....

👋🏻 hey! I was alone up there, made it very enjoyable in the true spirit of my name, ok some girls joined me for breakfast which really made that. All special after seeing them all moved from the road earlier that day. Felt like they came seeking solitude and safety around me. Little Bo Peep 🐑 ha ha! Sorry to hear about your pillow. It’s hard to give this stuff a lifetime guarantee, I definitely get the use out of my stuff before it fails. I hope you get out on the Pass soon. That’s one camp I’ll remember fondly forever. How could you ever hate yourself? I don't understand. You're one of the most lovely people in the world. I don't think there's another YT channel that I look forward to more than yours. Literally. What brought you to that point? (Don't answer that if it's too personal!). I've been down again in recent weeks. Had another bout of my illness and a barrage of horrible medical tests. I feel like a pin cushion sometimes. I'll spare you the more graphic details. It just knocks me on my arse and I struggle to get back up again. I have to do it in small steps, like with this easy walk I've planned, out to Stanage Pole for a selfy with an old black and white photograph of my grandparents with my mother and uncles when they were kids taken at the same spot. I'm going to get my daughter to take one with my photo. Maybe start a trippy family tradition. I latch on to certain people as inspiration for the various projects I've got going on in my life. I'm studying at the moment, and my inspiration for that project is a physicist called David Deutsch. I'm lifting weights, and my inspiration for that project is a ripped guy called Joe Delaney. I'm into meditation, with my inspiration for that project being a Buddhist monk called Venerable Nick Keomahavong. And I'm into wild camping. Guess who I've latched onto for that one. I think of you and I reach for boots. "If she can, I can". 😉

What an awesome comment thank you and I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t been well. I did a lovely walk with my dad up to the pole then over the bog to Stanage edge and back to Ringinglow last week. Lovely walking, teaching him how to use walking poles. Sounds like a great idea recreating the picture, I’ve done this many times. I think when a person hits rock bottom they don’t like themselves very much, feel worthless, powerless and unable to FEEL. I hated myself for sinking so low when I had so much to live for but I was mentally unwell with a huge imbalance of chemicals. Once I got support and talked about it my recovery began. I put myself at the centre of everything which wasn’t easy as a mother but I still do it now hence my RU-vid channel was born. A celebration of what I love which is one of the biggest decisions I’ve made putting myself out there with all of My vulnerability. Thank you for your continued support and I feel very humbled to have inspired you on your journey 😊ATB, Sarah

Well done you. That was a reyt riveting watch. I was so jealous of you being out there having seen your socials posts the other day, you really dropped lucky with the conditions, which I have to say were pretty much perfect. We are so blessed to have that right on our doorsteps. Another place to add to the list of "need to camp there". Glad the Big Agnes is working for you, they really are good pads to sleep on, so comfy, and I have that same pillow as well. I just can't bring myself to drop a grand on a tent though. I'm dossing in a church hall tonight with the woodland camping crew. We should be camping this weekend but the wood is still in a state after all the storms and its still too cold for the older gentry to handle so we have the use of a church hall. I've got a curry and some beers to neck, kip on the carp fishing bed, then back home in the morning after a trip to the Rab shop for a mooch round. Can't say I won't come back with summat new! Gigging tomorrow night at a charity function, we are one of 5 bands helping raise money for someone's cancer treatment. Stay on it rattlecan, you're on a roll!! ATB

Rattlecan 😂that’s my favourite nickname, I’m proud 😂 if I ever meet you Andy ya know in ‘real life’ I won’t let you down on the talky front 😆. I’ve wanted to camp there for a while but knew it was popular so it put me off. I’ve turned up on Derwent edge before and struggled to get pitched due to lots of campers being out. It was un nerving not camping where Id had in mind. I hope the woodland is safe to camp soon, least you continue to make the most of the back up, nothing quite beats being out with ya mates with fire and beers though does it? Ps don’t need to drop a grand in a tent, yours is perfect, I’d rather have Hillary than a nice car 🚙 😂 ATB Andy, thanks for teaching and have. Great night, Sarah

Stunning video, epic views, a tip on the water, turn your bottles upside down, water will freeze from the top down ,so you should be able to get water out your bottles ,as I notice you keep them in your boots, another is to fill a nalgene with hot water before bed ,use as hot water bottle, then in morning, you'll have a litre of water ready for drinks /porridge etc, I've never had a leak, but you can wrap it in a dry bag (just on the safe side ), hope it helps, good health and safe travels, cheers craig

Hey Sarah, just watched your video- absolutely loved it! I'm a huge fan, and whenever I'm having a rough day, I turn to one of your previous episodes. It never fails to bring joy to my day, and I can't help but smile at the screen. I was actually planning to go camping this Wednesday, right to that same spot, but unfortunately, circumstances kept me stuck in bustling London. I hope you had an amazing time, and thank you for sharing your memories from those darker times in your life. Many of us go through similar moments, and just when it seems like there's no way out, someone shows us a different way to brew our metaphorical cup of tea. For me, a turning point was an expedition to Kinder Scout. I set off ill-prepared, thinking I wouldn't make it back. But the sunrise, the fresh air, the taste of spring water - it saved my life. As you mentioned in a previous video, "I'm always in the right place at the right time." I found myself in the right place. Remember, you're already an inspiration to many. Keeping my fingers crossed, and I hope our paths cross on the trail one day. Take care, M.

Eeee that were well good lass. You wouldn’t be expecting cyclists up there especially in that snow. It’s slippy just walking it. Great video. Grab yourself a pack of those dead cat mufflers for the top of the Boya and then you don’t need to use the noise reduction feature. There are some with tighteners on so it’s really tight on top of the mic. I always found that the noise reduction reduced the quality for some reason. I too got mine wet on my WheelStones camp and had to replace. Luckily it was in the time frame for returning though. Did the pegs work well for you? That’s something i need to change. I still have my original hook ones 🤦🏻. Just haven’t got round to sorting them yet lol. All the best! Enjoy the rest of your hols. Gav

Yes 🙌🏻 it was a bit of a surprise and certainly a challenge on the steep path at night! Hi Sarah, What a poor old sheep, let's hope she got off the hill OK. Wonderful views down to the road, and the new mike really makes a difference. Walking back in the afternoon you can hear the crunch under foot, not heard any bad reports on the micro spikes. Sounds like the weight loss is going well, you'll have to re-name your channel slender Sarah😅. Funny you commented on treading on Hillary with your spikes, I was just thinking the same, that could be tragic. Aren't you just becoming a gear collector, you'll be stashing stuff in the loft and kids rooms before you know it. Well done for sharing your mental issues, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and gives you a second chance. Sounds like you had a very busy day, and apart from your daughter everything fell into place and you got your reward, and a midnight snack. Wonder if the nine sheep went to sleep counting Sarah's. Did you refill your stove or carry spare pucks? You must get out of the habit holding your kiddiwhizz and saying "cheers" unless you've taken to drinking the stuff (Viking). As usual, thanks for taking us with you. Cheers Graham

Ha ha! I love this Graham thank you 🙏🏻 I do wonder if the 9 sheep fell asleep counting Sarah’s eh? Ha ha! I have come to collect the gear that I feel will keep me safe and comfortable and is relative to the conditions I choose to camp in. I do feel like I have everything I need now so I’m really happy with that. I’ve worked hard to gather it all so I am now reaping the benefits of that hard work. The broken stuff is annoying but such is life, it’s faired me well. I bought a mic set this time incase one goes on the blink again. All my gear is cleaned and ready to go again, back to work I go this week but I’m sure I’ll be back out very soon. Hopeful for the storm to pass and send me some fortune in its wake 🔮 on my next adventure. ATB, Sarah

The sheep feel safer with you rather than away from you. Is that not food for thought. To completely forget the mundane linear side of existence is why I'll go hedge mumping. No wants, no need to' dos, no musts. If it weighs, it's not coming. Shelter ? Wear it. or find it. Planning ahead ? Tying the bootlaces, put a bag of food in my shouldered bread bag. Nil luxuries. Done it that way since 1982 Aged 12. I'd feel vulnerable in a tent.

A great way to look at it, they did feel Like friends although I kept my distance And respected that it was their home. I do feel vulnerable in my tent but only for the fact that others would see me, I really like the idea of a bivvy camp and so spend time thinking about camps in locations that are away from the view of others, like I am hardly there at all hence setting up late and leaving early. The only people I saw were the night biker 🚴‍♂️ and the 40+ people up on mam tor in the morning 🌅

Howden moor. Grinagh stones Up that steep ridge on the bend before the kings tree turning point. A rocky outcrop as remote as it gets in the Peak District. Never met anybody else up there. You can stay for days probably weeks & not see anybody + it's the most spectacular views. There's medieval era masonry still standing in fact. That's how seldom it's visited. There is a geocache though near a scary fissure on the plateau, but I've known no spot quieter in the dark peak.@@SoloSarahBX

Without ever hitting rock bottom i don't think you can ever really appreciate or more importantly feel life in all its vivid glory. Even the smallest things that historically would have been missed or not register i think your senses get awakened more. Love the rational for your channel and recording your trips to look back on for yourself when times aren't great - honestly such a refresing change than alot of content creators! Great tent, i've had my Soulo over the years from the Lakes to the Arctic circle in all weathers, gone crazy prices now but having a few of their tents they last and well never had one let me down so i think they are an investment. Wish you many a happy night under the star's - some stunning views and photography not to mention the sheeps :-) ! PS Dates are brilliant, not many people use them, no idea why they are solid fuel and don't go off, as for cold spots this time of year id really recommend a liner, sea to summit extreme works well for me plus keeps your bag fresher long term.

@@SoloSarahBX Ahh no worries thanks not needed your note about not being able to make a cup of tea strung a bell. Yea its a very dark and horrible time for sure, wouldn't wish it on anyone that crevasse, but if you can climb out and survive it from it comes a phoenix for sure, an awakening and a stronger determined and fulfilled life. That is ace re tent for birthday present after saving up, i bet he and your daughter if she's old enough love watching your nights out on the hill :-) ! Safe travel's and hope you keep injury free on the hills this time of year - on that point those steel tent pegs are super heavy but also be very careful. One of my climbing partners had a really nasty fall off a ridge couple of years back with some nasty bounces before arresting his fall, messed up pretty bad with leg fracture's but defo not helped by being impaled by one of his tent pegs in the same pocket deep into his back and core (they where also on an angle poking through side pocket 11:34 in vlog and same steel ones as that - i know as have the same also as great for banging through rock gaps). Freak accident for sure, but well accidents happen and he got told a few more mm in he wouln't have made it! You turn them the other way you risk when bouncing off rock/uneven ground your head snapping into them as packs dont stay where they are in bad falls. On those long steel nail spike pegs whilst its a total ball ache i'd recommend putting them side on parallel to your back in the base of your bag and something infront of them just for the worst. Sounds rediculous i know and if it hadn't happened to my climbing partner id be never had given it a second thought as used to do the same. On the boring subject of pegs lol, with the hilleberg, when its not frozen ground and for most of the time in UK on moorland check out the "Delta Pegs" (yellow with bend in), they are so simple but really really effective, the higher the wind force the more they dig into ground due to the fulcrum point, better than double pegging even and don't slip out in wet ground. Anyway yea safe travel's and clear starry skies :-)

@@_Mountain_Dave very interesting share! So sorry to hear about your mate bloody hell poo bloke. I will certainly heed your advice thank you! That walk was particularly treacherous and I had to be careful. It would have been even easy to stumble and fall down the edge with a freak accident pegs and a big backpack. That risk is certainly real so thank you. I will pack them safely next time. I’ve seen the delta pegs. Until now I’ve managed well with the DAC pegs but my collection continues to grow as my experience and knowledge does. I hope your friend made a full recovery ❤️‍🩹

@@SoloSarahBX Yea he's all good, ropes up alot more now also in winter so yea things happen for a reason. But yea it's one of those things i'd never gave a second thought too, axes yea but not pegs. The standard pegs are great, along with the poles, its more of a thing in really wet conditions on moorland and in higher winds. Well worth the few quid as stops having to keep getting out that nice warm bag during the night when grim to stop peg's working loose as they literally don't budge. Have thumbed and sub'd - good luck on your next adventure! OH and ps one of my mates really rates that collapsable bottle for vitals too if any of your female viewers reading this, way better than the shewee she reckons also - defo better than using a nalgene bottle and then getting the wrong one during the night waking up thristy and 75% asleep and taking a swig from the wrong bottle which is something you only ever do once i promise🤮🤣🤣!

I totally get you feeling empowered when wearing your spikes.For me it was the first time I used poles. It felt as though I'd done the Edale skyline in an hour. You say you're a short-arse Sarah. Well, you certainly give credence to the adage that good things come in small packages.I, on the other hand, am over six feet tall and there's not much good to be found in me. So it must be true. Your eloquent tent-time monologue was something else. It could have been written by Alan Bennett as part of his Talking Heads series. In your last few films something quite lovely happens. At some point in the proceedings you sigh a delicate ethereal sigh. And here it is again @ 42.03. Magical. I am a Rolling Stones fan and was generously gifted their latest album. @@SoloSarahBX I hope this posts OK. If not I shall get me to nunnery & become affiliated to theSwonicles. Anyone who spends time in our countryside will encounter sheep.And once in a while one that could use some help.Sometimes we can help,other times not and we are frustrated. I once helped a chap free a young ram with his head stuck fast in a wire fence. Another time I came across a sheep on its back,legs in the air. It made no attempt to move as I approached so I assumed it was injured: a broken back or some such. When I reached the farmhouse no one was home so I left a note. I later found out that when this happens to sheep they are unable to right themselves due to the weight of their fleece. Apparently it is possible right them but I would imagine this would be a two person job. My first ever wild camp was at Scoat Tarn on Red Pike,Wasdale. There is flat ground by the outflow but three tents were already there when I arrived. I went a couple of hundred feet above the tarn in search of a pitch and I found a cracker.Big enough for my Terra Nova Solar 2 and as flat as a putting green. With my packet meal and mugs of tea I spent an amazing evening watching the beams of the lighthouses on the distant Isle of Man.I couldn't wait to see THAT view in the morning. Early morning, and excited by the prospect of the stunning view, I unzipped the tent door and there, standing shoulder to shoulder with their faces almost inside my tent, were three sheep. My burst of laughter scattered them and I realised that I had probably pitched on their night couch. If sheep could talk I'm sure the air would've been blue.And rightly so, it is their home.

Just come across your channel. Thankyou for sharing your lovely trip...and your mental struggles... to be so mentally unwell not to be able to do basic day to day tasks hits home! I took early retirement and found my escapism in miniaturing..The things we do 'just for ourselves' are the most precious times. ❤

What an amazing hobbie and likewise for sharing that too. I felt like I was watching a miniature village from my location down into Castleton in the bottom. Really special, simple entertainment is the best, previous times ✨ATB, Sarah

Sarah I was wondering what you were using to blow up your mattress. It certainly takes the work out of blowing it up from your lungs. I lay here nice an warm in bed watching your videos and think actually sleeping out in those temperatures is very hard. I take your skills on board x

Hey 👋🏻 it’s called a Flextail tiny pump. It doubles up as a lantern to light up my tent at night. Excellent light weight and reliable piece of kit. Takes the hard work out of filling the mat with the pump sack it comes with. I’m glad that you enjoyed watching it’s nice to know that I’m helping folk learn when i am a novice myself 🙌🏻ATB, Sarah

I pitched there, a bit nearer to the rocks. I was in my tent just about to fall asleep, around 10.30pm, when I heard voices in the distance. They got louder and louder and eventually a group of drunk teenage boys arrived and decided they'd sit a few metres away with their feet dangling over the edge! They were there for ages before disappearing back the way they came! So a nice place to camp in January, maybe one to avoid when it's warmer.

I will not be camping on the Pass in summer, it’s too popular, I’m always on the hunt for camps out the way, thanks for sharing, I hope you still enjoyed your camp after they’d left you in peace 😊ATB, Sarah

@@Martycycleman I saw his lights on the ground before I realised it was a bike. I was expecting to encounter another camper as it can be a popular spot but having just come up from the road on a very steep treacherous snowy path on the edge it surprised me to see a biker! Fair play to that man 🤩
