Its said that great things come in little packages, and the incredible Snow Flea is called a "Spring tail" is no exception. This species is about the size of a fleck of pepper! With a name that includes "flea" you might think that they bite however, they are totally harmless and not a flea at all. They actually belong to a very large group of flightless 6 legged arthropods that are helpful "decomposers" of soil. Snow flees actually eat Algae that they find on the surface of the snow so they are a miniature herbivore, traveling in huge herds are just like tiny bison on a migration along a hidden world. In summer, they are almost never seen because their dark black bodies blend in so well to the leaf litter. In winter they contrast against the bright white snow cover and yet are still often over looked mistaken for tiny debris. So the next time your hiking in the North County keep a look out for our tiny little neighbors the amazing Snow Fleas! I'm Mark Fraser and to join me on more exciting wildlife adventures you can find me at my website www.naturewalks... and check out my blog http:www/naturewalkswithmark.org/blog

Great video! These little buggers are why I can't get myself to eat the Vermont treat - maple sugar on snow. However, our chickens LOVE to graze on these little buggers. It's the only live food they get in winter.

Very fascinating. Always wondered about these little fellows and tried finding information about them, but couldn't find any. Thank you for your stories and explications!

yes like Bison grazing.. imagine that on an actual Bison's size scale- Bison that can leap ohh, about 150 to 200 feet and come crashing down ! lol, just kiddin around, GREAT video.. I actually learned about them a few years ago from reading Thoreau's journals, as he mentioned them many times during the winter months... I've got to look for them myself this winter as I've probably walked over them many times, but never noticed...

Me and my friend thought there was just a little bit of dirt in the snow, so we started eating it since we have never seen it before. Upon closer inspection, we discovered that the black dots where small insects that I now see are snow fleas. We have definitely consumed many. What do we do? Are we going to die? Please help

We get them in Grayling MI quite often. XC skiers hate them. They kill your glide. They ignore the sign that clearly states "Stay off the ski trails."

They also call these little beasties -- springtails because they use their "tails" as a spring to jump away.

@Anthony Argueta same here. I saw one of these things twice in a row on my bed and now I’m just wondering as to why I keep finding these things on my bed. I even cleaned my bed to make sure there were no more of these bugs but one still found it’s way to my bed, so it’s just really weird. Anyway now I’m just having a hard time falling asleep because of the fact that I just found one on my arm in my bed lol. Hopefully I won’t find anymore on my bed after tonight . 😭😂😅

@@Luna-mx7fi are you sure it was a snow flea? They don’t jump on humans and follow them into the home. They need moisture to survive. Interesting.

@pussiboos21t

Why would you want to burn some totally harmless insects that will be food for other small creatures. All life is part of a complex chain. Hopefully you learnt a few things in the past 8 years ... ❤

Because of the poor FPS of the capture device or the limited FPS of the video, it looks like they just disappear when they jump because it's so fast they're just gone the next frame.
