Hard to believe that tomorrow is New Year’s and the holidays are coming to a close for another year. The older we get the quicker they seem to come. It’s the dawn of an incredible year for your family with two new littles impending. Happy New Year’s to one and all and hope Granny does so well this year.

I loved Matt's joke about chickens going to roost at sundown and his ability to smell snow and rain . I have never smelled snow coming, but can smell rain coming, especially before a summer storm. It's an indescriable, but lovely scent. City folks just won't understand either of the two.

Talking about smelling the snow, when we lived in South Dakota I could definitely smell the snow coming, it’s a crisp smell; it almost tickles the nose. Now we’re in Washington and it’s the same way; the pines smell more piney and it’s crisp and clean smelling. Your woods are beautiful!

I can pretty much feel Matt’s sadness taking down the stands. The end of elk, then deer seasons were always tough on me. I used to temper it a bit with waterfowling which would last thru the first week of January. Then I got too old to lay in the snow waiting for the elusive Canadian goose. Mostly, I miss all of it. I never hunted in hardwood forests. Really different than our mountains of quakies and pines.

I just learned recently that there was a blight to chestnuts that wiped out almost all the native trees just about. My boyfriend that lives here in Hiawassee said he used to be able to get them from out in back, but no longer. It was my first time seeing sweet gum and other trees I’ve never seen, coming from Minnesota. The only trees that stay green are evergreens there. I enjoy learning about the area through your videos, thank you.

The American Chestnut was all gone by the 1960 I,m 70 years old and never saw them and they were everywhere in the mountains of WNC. There are still Chinese chestnuts around but they are imported from China. But they are trying to bring them back and I think the test trees will be planted in the near future. Really hoping this works my Daddy said they were a sight to behold. 😊

@@sharonlesley901 I heard it affected the turkey population around the Blue Ridge area and I read that there are still some around that seem to be resistant and trees that have fallen but still sprout saplings. I looked at buying some seedlings through a Georgia program but it was a few hundred for a few seeds alone.

Oh, Tipper please do have some cups made like the ones you have. I love mugs with flat bottoms. They are usually hand made and you can't knock them over. And the hand feel of them is so nice. We will buy them, we promise. 😊 I laughed when Matt said about sleeping sound "That's about to change." Because I thought he was thinking of the fact when a baby is in the house sleeping goes out the window for a while. And yall are about to have one and sometimes two. But they will be such a joy and a blessing you will not miss anything. God bless yall. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. I live where it seldom snows and it gets over a hundred in the summer. I want to enjoy the cool as long as we can. 😊

I’m like Matt, I could always smell snow & rain although we seldom got snow in Mississippi. When we did get snow it was a holiday & businesses & schools were closed & people would make chili, hot chocolate & snow ice cream and find a hill & slide down on metal garbage can lids, old tires or anything else they could come up with. Most of the time we didn’t have gloves so Mom would make us put old wool socks on our hands. Those were joyful times. I hope there will be snow in heaven!

I live in northwest Indiana and depending on temperatures and how the wind blows over Lake Michigan we can get massive amounts of snow. We refer to it as Lake Snow. I’m a retired nurse and I started out many early mornings through blinding, blowing snow to get to work. More than once I ended up in a snow bank. I was always thankful when the wind died down, clean up began and the next shift made it to work and I was able to get home. We’ve not had much snow at all this season, a dusting now and then. But we’ve away to go so it’s likely we could get a big snow yet. Had a few in March, but it warms up and it’s amazing how quick the snow melts. Happy New Year!

My Big Brother with guidance from above..... singlehandedly fell a huge tree today. 100 feet tall and huge trunk....old tree. We are just north of Asheville. One of the oldest big pines in these parts. It had to be done. It was jeopardizing his little home.. We are blessed. It fell just were it needed,

Y'all are the cutest. I love that you let us "visit" with you. I use many sayings like "every day of the world" and similar such sayings. Matt is hilarious. I can smell the rain coming too.

Happy new year Appalachian family, though I live in Florida😂, would not mind living there. Love you all and enjoy the family videos lots!!! Nothing like a big ole family ❤. My hubs will be in bed soon watching TV, and me a bit later since we have fireworks in our area, and am a light sleeper 😂.
