That's what separates american and British psa's, in a british one he would have gone over the screen would fade to black and then you would hear the crash a half a second scream before silence and text appearing on screen about train safety
The train always has the right of way. Always. Obey the traffic laws, be observant and cautious near crossing grades, and for God's sake stay off the tracks.
It's difficult to gauge the speed of a train when it's far enough down the tracks. I've waited to board enough passenger trains over the years to know. A locomotive appears to be creeping along at a few miles an hour, and it could be as much as a mile out of the station, but I'm not familiar enough with the area's landmarks to know for sure. And even when the train's brakes are on as it approaches the station, it generates enough of a wind for me to step back a bit and be surprised, as always, by the size and force of the train. I'm a railfan, and part of that love of trains means I'll always respect their power and obey their right-of-way laws.
0:25 ah that old school electric window noise. Great train psa, used to brakeman a short line next to trail and at 5-10 mph, I was still dodging people on my tracks.
Did anyone else catch that the train that came came in the opposite direction of the stopped train? I think the tracks had a split in them so the stopped train was waiting for the other train to pass.
@@josephcarson8382 They might still have a point because i think there's no close up of the waiting train. Only of the moving one (or of a train that represents the moving one).
I just realized that the train that stopped was on the right while the train that passed the crossing came from the left, and the scene with the stopped train had two lines or track. That means that there was actually two trains not one. Wow I thought at first there was 1 train. :0
@@ivangenov6782 For us non-railfans, it's not obvious. That's why I came looking in the comments section. Better to share your knowledge and enlighten us than withhold your knowledge and call us ignorant.
OK, I just figured it out from other comments. Turns out there's two trains, each coming from a different direction. The people are focused on one train to their right, which is stopped or slowed on a siding. Meanwhile, they aren't focused on the second train which is swiftly approaching from the left. That's why the locomotives change--because we're seeing two different trains. Thus, the PSA is not so much about misjudging distance and speed (although that's what I thought it was about) and more about looking both ways.
@@kentslocum That's the main point - that they thought the gates were down for the stopped train, when it was actually for a different train coming from the other direction they hadn't considered. I've heard stories of a double track where someone drove around the gates after the train had passed, only to be hit by another train coming the other direction on the other track, their view of it (and the engineer's view of the car) blocked by the first train. Moral is to always expect a train in any direction on any track, and the crossing gates might know something you don't.
Me waiting at the crossing. Person in the car telling me to beat the train. Me. No that isn’t a good idea. There is probably another train coming and they are much closer or faster than they appear. Plus trains can’t swerve to avoid anything in their path and they also can’t stop quickly. A train traveling at 55 miles per hour takes a mile or more to stop which is the equivalent of 18 football fields meaning that if we are on the tracks even if they apply the brakes they won’t be able to avoid hitting us. Train going through the crossing. Person in the car being surprised. Me. See I told you. That is why you should never attempt to beat a train.
I wonder if she found that on her phone she was so interested in and it told her she had time. Of course if it’s on the internet it must be true.......NOT
It was a different train the one they looked at had stopped at a track split so the other one could go on the other side. Notice at crossings one set of rails but several everywhere else several? The train stopped to let the other go by
Never drive around railroad crossing gates. You never know if a train is actually stopped or not if it's far away. A super important safety message from Senser Films.
You mean the one where she crashed into a train already halfway through the crossing and got hit by another train on the second track going the same direction? Where she tried to escape the police with the stolen mercedes or something?
they DO stop for cars on tracks. but not until a mile or more after violently dragging you down the tracks. if you aren't mutilated in the wreckage, you might also get whiplash.
On Lake Drive just off of Nebraska Highway 66 just southwest of South Bend, Nebraska next to the Platte River and the YMCA summer camp. There's a BNSF mainline that has the siding just before the crossing and the small fenced off area with the small bend in the road if you were going towards the highway like they were. I'd cross that crossing all the time to get to the lake and river when I worked at the YMCA camp next to it. If you go into street view on Google Maps it looks pretty much the same just without the snow.
well, the train cars are blowing lots of snow with them, making the assumed hissing sound, and the jointed rails for the crossing signals are making metallic sounds as the train flys over them making the noises accompanying the "steam"

Tbh If I were in that boyfriends situation…. I would be so traumatised and I wouldn’t even speak to that person bc of the fact that they were bugging and getting a bit upset at me for you know not putting my life in danger by not going around the gates. Like we could’ve died!! u can never tell a trains speed 😢
Great P.S.A.! The only thing I have with it is the steam chuffing noises. It’s the modern day, steam locomotives haven’t been used since the 1940s and ‘50s.
That lady almost got them both killed. Never tell anyone to cross the gates no matter what. You could have been wrong because there could be another train.
Two, (2) different trains, on two (2) different tracks... If you had gone forward like the girl friend wanted him to, you would be singing a very different tune...
@@THE_IRON_HORSE The train the woman was looking at (on the right) was STOPPED all the time (Track One)... It was the other train, a SECOND ONE, moving left to right that you heard and then saw go past the grade crossing. On Track Two...
@@thomasboese3793 yeah I know cmon I'm a railfan I see this all the time I was just saying that the train that went pass then change locomotive first it had a s ES44ac then it change to an SD70ACE and back to and ES44

Two divided tracks! One train is stopped with the front lights on! The ditch lights needs to be active enable for it be a full on moving train! Right there should be the cue! If it’s a single track and then goes onto a double track down the rails, then that means the other train is at a red signal light allowing the other one to get through first! That’s the ultimate cue people have to look at when they’re coming to railroad crossings like that. Never assume that it’s not moving! Cuz in a split second… the second train can come out of nowhere very fast! Like the one in this did. Freight trains have powers that many don’t understand fully. Ask yourself this if you have a person in the car and they pressure you to do that when the guards are down… ask yourself if you would jump off a cliff with them?? I wouldn’t! That guy did a nice job knowing that train was stopped and was not going to risk it. Shame on his girlfriend for not thinking about safety!
Me waiting at a railroad crossing and seeing the stopped train and the gates still down. Welp I know what that means. Another train is coming. Other person telling me to cross the tracks and go around the gates. Me. No don’t you see. Even though that train is stopped the gates are still down and there are two divided multiple tracks. That is a clear cue that there is another train coming on the other track. Those gates know something that we don’t and since they are down it is clearly warning us. Therefore I ain’t going around the gates and I am waiting until it’s safe to cross. Not only is it illegal to go around the gates but we could get hit by the train and be killed and I don’t want us to get killed. Me staying where I initially stopped. Train going through on the other track. Other person being shocked. Me. See I told you there was another train coming. That is why we don’t go around railroad crossing gates.
There’s a couple of things wrong in the video Just wanted to point them out At 0:12 you can see 2 or 3 General Electric ES44ACs (keep that in mind for later) At 0:17 the railroad crossing seen only has 1 pair of lights with 2 red lights but seconds later has 2 pairs of lights with 4 red lights (2 on each pair) At 0:24 the trains has steam engine sounds which is wrong on so many levels because they are train cars and there is no engine seen 0:33 The train that is stopped is facing the opposite direction and only had one head light on 1:03 Seconds later when the train comes rushing thru, you can see an EMD SD70ACE pulling the train but then seconds later has a General Electric ES44AC That’s all the goofs I could spot
@@modeltrainsandrandomness6445 it sound like a steam engine because the cars are rolling over track circuit joints while blowing snow with them. and, another thing to note is one the train the girfreind pointed out as stopped was a second train. it was waiting for the first train to pass
@@thomasboese3793 I think you never see a close up of the waiting train, only the distant shot. I think all shots of a moving train represent the one that's approaching from the left. In addition to that, you always see it from the same side, I think that's the 180° rule in filming. And I think the number of lights at the level crossing changes because the first frame only shows the lower ones (see the small blue sign below them).
Theres only one train first you see the rear DPU in the siding then you see the SD70ace go by that turns into an GEVO but that is the DPU because the ditch lights are off The GEVO shot is flipped and in reverse (No the snow is not going up) it's just a lot of editing of one single train
He would have made it across easily. The fact that after he began to cross he had time to stop and look at the stopped train (taking 3-5 seconds), then think for a couple seconds, then decide not to risk it (another couple seconds), then have a 10 second argument with his gf before the train crosses in front of them proves that he had at least 20 seconds to cross the tracks before the train arrived. It only takes 2-3 seconds to go through a crossing in a car...
@@KG-xt4oq you idiot. you sad soul. the crossing signals are supposed to give 30 seconds of warning time (minimum is actually 20, but railroads got standards) but, the signal could be giving less, timed for a slower speed than the train's actual speed. (a training doing forty when the signal is timed for 30 seconds at 20 miles an hour. or the signals may be defective and come on too late. and when the gate is actually down, you have barely any time to make it. you won't. that train was FLYING. 40 or 45 through that crossing. if he was hit, he and his girlfriend would have both died.
