We came back to Lassen National Park area to go snow-wheeling on hwy 17. We were surprised by the amount of snow for this area. We were only able to go as far as the 4.5 mile marker before the snow got too deep. This was a great place to film as the area was wide open, and good lighting.
I would highly recommend snow-wheeling on this hwy if you are new to snow-wheeling as the main hwy 36 and 44 are nearby, also red bluff is 30 miles away in case you run into any issue. Cell phone signal is not good, so make sure to bring your CB or HAM radio.
The purpose of this video was to show you the amount of snow accumulation on the hwy, so that you can decide whether or not to go snow-wheeling with your 4x4. Without giving too much away, we completed few video projects and we're hoping to share those "how to" videos early as next week. make sure to subscribe and ring the bell so that you get notifications.
In conclusion, if you are planning to go snow-wheeling in this area, I would highly recommend that your 4x4 has lockers and a winch. From my understanding the snow in this area is very dense, and deep. Therefore, snow chains may not be much help especially once you hit 3 + feet of dense, wet, snow.
Thank you all for watch, and stay tuned:)

Time for spools or lockers, lunch box will probably work best for a daily driver I'm in Magalia right down the mountain 🌄

Factory width tires w/ chains built from tractor chains and a reliable winch is what I use on my fj40 here in Colorado snow country, this combination would have allowed You to maneuver around no problem, I’m glad You had cell service and a really good friend….Great Video !!!

Here in Washington State we have the same type of snow, like wet concrete. Never go out in it by yourself if possible. Have chains for all wheels, shovels, and get a set of Maxtraxs, or similar traction device. Don't ever count on a winch to get you out of a bad situation, have options. If you have to shovel an area to turn around, do it. Taking time and doing extra work is a much easier solution than sliding off the mountain.

Scooter is a good friend. I think you made that a lot harder than it needed to be.

My dear old grandpa always said the problem with four wheel drive is you you go further to get stuck deeper.

Gotta love learning experiences!! Your fj 40 looks alot like the one I have in my garage. Your adventure reminds me of some of my early times out, lots of desire to go out, not a lot of equipment. Creativity and doing some sketchy tactics almost always got me back home. Keep going out, enjoy your 40 their truly built to last

This reminds of the time I was just going to take a short run in my FJ40 after work and I didn’t take my CB, my recovery gear or a heavy jacket! I got stuck so bad my buddy and I ended up spending the night in Ol ‘76. Walked out next day and swore I’d never again go without being properly equipped and a buddy vehicle. I’ll spare you my telling what equipment you should have had. You know! 🙂 Glad it worked out and you didn’t end up a statistic.

I would suggest a Handyman jack instead of that wimpy pumper, a set of chains, and like somebody said before, know your vehicles and your limitations. Been there.

Never underestimate the power and versatility of a wimpy bottle jack😂 I’ve used the bottle jack on every tire failure scenarios. In my recent video I assisted a Tacoma when his tire ran off the rim. We tried his high lift jack but Ended up using my wimpy bottle jack to lift his truck... go check out that video. Also, the highlight jack is dangerous on a soft snow base. With a bottle jock, few pumps and you’re off the ground cause your lift point is at the axle. With a high lift jack you gotta lift the frame plus the suspension travel to get the tires off the ground which puts you and the truck in a dangerous situation with all that load and recoil on the jack....😮

Wow Brian!!! I was watching the angle of the pull and thought " it's gonna rip that tire off the rim".. and then it did. Winter Wonderland turned in "How much grit do you have". There's experience and wisdom. Thanks for going through that experience to give me the wisdom not to. Keep those adventures coming.

Nice video but get yourself better prepared. Snowchains might help, diff-lock in the rear, get some max-tracks too. And please never use that jack ever again you did. Not on the free wheeling hub. When it slips off you might get hurt badly.

do you think mud terrain tires would have made a difference ? maybe a shovel or 2 ?
@4x2WagonFamily
@4x2WagonFamily 4 года назад
Maybe a combination of diff locks and more aggressive tread would have been helpful. If my winch didn’t break we would have been fine... I think:)
