Those Victorian engineers were wizards. The train trip looked like great fun despite the poor visibility which provides an excuse for a return trip. Thanks for sharing the adventure.

Too bad about the fog, but as a steam engine enthusiast, a recording of a steam locomotive mechanism makes everything good, haha! Thanks for the movie, I'm looking forward to the next one.

The bane of every tourist! "You should have been here yesterday/last week/etc!" 😉 Luckily I only had a handful of such times in a 30-year travel career. Plenty of things were missed unfortunately but I can't say that I regret any of those holidays. When you look back it's an odd person who wishes that they'd done less! 😊

The very next day was sunny, but then if we had switched something else would have been in the rain and cloud, so its swings and roundabouts.

Me & my 3 boys walked up Snowden & then down again around 1970 - love Wales - it was also very misty, but the paths were obvious - well worn, and coming down we took a different route & discovered a stone (Miner's ?) village that was abandoned - spooky - we emerged at the far end of the lake & had to walk all the way back along the pass to our start point - where my, by then, very worried husband & daughter - who refused to do the climb, were waiting ! Totally exhausting ! I did not attempt that again !

Yes, know what you mean! Backpacked in 1950s, up and down a foggy Snowdon, with my Girl Guide friends led by our intrepid leaders. I am very grateful for the lovely memories that our Guide leaders gave us while giving up their holiday time to take us Youth Hostelling to experience the beautiful English and Welsh countryside.

In about 1962 we stayed at Colwyn Bay. We travelled all over North Wales by rail. Many of those lines now closed sadly. We took the train from Bangor to Llanberis, and then walked up Snowden, taking the train back down. We also hired a rowing boat and rowed across Lyn Padarn to find a four foot gauge slate railway on the far shore. So a very enjoyable day out. In 2014 we took the Welsh Highland Railway from Porthmadog to Caernarfon, viewing Snowden from the train. Now semi-retired in Picton, South Island, New Zealand.

Another excellent video thank you. Re the weather I hope I can make you feel better by referring to my trip up Mount Washington Cog Railway in New England. Brilliant sunny and very warm weather down in the station area. However we climbed several thousand feet up to the summit area and while there we had a full blown blizzard. I kid you not you just stayed inside the building until our train was ready, single carriage again, and then rushed out and into the carriage as quickly as possible . When back down the mountain beautiful sunny weather again. Never experienced such a change and I'm used to Pembrokeshire changeable weather.

Sorry you missed the final view due to low flying clouds. Wild beauty and occasional sheep! Did you choose the steam vs. diesel train because of the historic significance? While I'm not an actual train geek, I can't help being amazed when I think of how much toil and sacrifice went into connecting so much of the world by rail. It made such a difference to 'regular people', making travel more affordable, and saving days of dangerous miles on roads.
@MemorySeekers

Oh it had to be steam, the diesel is just not the same!

The Welsh apparently don’t call it Snowden anymore. They have also changed the name of the Brecon Beacons.
@MemorySeekers
@MemorySeekers 5 месяцев назад
Yes we have mentioned that in other videos in the series.
@shelaghrichardson1294
@shelaghrichardson1294 5 месяцев назад
The Welsh have NOT changed the name of Yr Wyddfa! Only the English have ever called it Snowden. Similarly the Brecon Beacons is the English name for Bannau Brycheiniog. Only when England invaded and conquered Cymru were its native language and place names replaced by English! Children at school were punished for speaking their native tongue until at least the late 19th century

Hi Simon and Will, so you let the train take the strain, we've walked up Snowdon a few times over the years and when we reach the summit we often have to laugh at train passengers who have their photos taken at the trig point fist pumping as though they've walked up 🤦🤣🤣 Shame you didn't get the views but that's Snowdon for you.
@MemorySeekers

That’s a little lie. In the late 70s I fell out the door age 6. My dad pulled the emergency thing and got me all safe and well. We happily continued our journey. No harm done. The reason I’m here watching this is because I’m planning to go up the mountain by rail again very soon. 😊

Prices for a return ticket in 2024 are £55. I'm sure to some people, this seems good value, but £110 for a couple to travel up a mountain and back down again is, no pun intended, a bit steep!

55 mins up, a 25 min break at the top and then you must come down on the same train. Another 55 mins. So about 2 hour 30 total.

@MemorySeekers
@MemorySeekers Месяц назад
The fog is actually low cloud in our video. It really is not possible to tell what it will be like on any given day, as you have to book so far in advance. All I can say is that more often it is shrouded in cloud.

What if you want to ride up but walk back down??? Is that allowed??
@MemorySeekers
@MemorySeekers 2 месяца назад
Yes you can do that on the diesel service only. For some reason they don’t sell single tickets on the steam service. Also you can do it by riding up and walk down not the other way around. They don’t sell single tickets down.
